Growing Ginger Made Easy! Even though it is a tropical plant, anyone, anywhere can easily grow their own ginger at home with just a few easy steps. The best part...you can do it from regular store bought sections of ginger!
In this video I'll go through the whole process of taking ginger from the grocery store, sprouting it in a week or so, and then planting it up in containers for an easy summer harvest. It is a long crop and like we said, it is tropical. But with a little planning and the right timing, everyone can grow their own ginger!

Good to know as even though I would like a some ginger and a little horse radish, it's turmeric that's the most consistently and commonly used stem/rhizome in this household, so I will indeed setup an area for these plants to continually grow/regrow.

Zone 6b here! I am happy to say my ginger came back this spring that I had left some or at least one in the ground and it’s going well- I’m thinking I’ll harvest and replant some inside to keep it going strong all winter and leave some in the ground. Try to keep the jungle going!

I feel pretty lucky to live a little bit south of New Orleans, Louisiana, in this case. I have so much ginger growing in my side yard that my husband has to mow it down. The rhizomes have gone past the edge of the flowerbed and I have them encroaching into the yard! It smells delicious when we mow them down. We are expecting a freeze next week, so I went out and dug most of it up. This video is timely for me, I’m going to move mine to containers. Thank you, from a former North Dakotan who got fed up with life in zone 3!

I've always wanted to try to grow ginger because it's something we use several times a week in the kitchen. I'm going to check back on our greenhouse records to see if we can get 6-7 months at those temperatures throughout Victoria summer, Jeff! Thank you so much for outlining the steps. Right on Sandra.....if you can start it early indoors on your kitchen counter, that can often buy you 2 months of the early growing time from February to April say.....then it should be smooth sailing until August! 🙂

Hi. JEFF. I'm doing my best to keep up. I am still in Georgia with my family. Our little garden on the balcony did, well so so. A hit with lettuces, spinach green beans wow. Tomatoes now no bees around. Carrots were a flop. I think I over watered. Cakes are pretty good. Zucchini again a flop. Just lots of flowers. So long story short, I ad a blast with my grandsons 4 and 5 years old. I learned a lot. Thanks to you. I will definitely do better next season. For now, I have garlic to plant, and the end, I believe, of green beans. 40's overnight starting Tuesday. So thank you, my friend, for all of your help. Love and God bless ❤

Pro advice as always. Ginger is not a part of a Middle Eastern cooking, but my X was Asian, and she taught my mother cook stir fry or something of the sort, so uses ginner often. Couple of years ago, ta piece of ginner sprouted, so I buried it in a pot on the porch and it grew for about four months before fall set in. I pulled it out and the ginger was so soft and so sweet that I munched on it over a week until it was gone. Let's see if I can follow these tips for next spring

You should buffer coco coir with a cal mag solution. The coco locks up the magnesium through a cat ion bond.

Love the video great info... on a side note, the inconsistent audio levels throughout the video are distracting. I find myself having to turn up or down the volume several times throughout the video to hear what is being said or having to turn on subtitles. It's not an issues with earphones.

Hi! I have grown Ginger using one of your previous youtubes, and it worked wonderfully. I'm in North Florida, planted two rhizomes in different pots and one in the ground. Harvested one from a container last year, and left the other two to overwinter. And they both returned😊 in the spring my question is, if I harvest the rhizome when the plant dies back, will that rhizome still be viable to replant the next spring or do I have to go to the grocery store again the produce department for a fresher rhizome? love your videos, always excited when I see a new one ❤

Yes, 100% it will be viable.... The stuff you buy at the grocery store is from plants that have died off and set the rhizomes for transport and storage. So same version of what you already have! Let us know how it goes though! :-)

Here in coastal zone 7b I planted some ginger in my mint bed some time ago and completely forgot about it, since it did not produce anything by the end of the year. I figured it was a lost cause, and I just needed to try planting it elsewhere. I did not plant any fresh ginger this year, but around late summer I noticed something odd. In the middle of my mint bed were some ginger leaves. Apparently the ginger had managed to perennialize and survive the winter in less than ideal conditions. I haven't decided whether to dig it up and take a look, or leave it alone.

Thank you for the videos. What is the method to store the ginger during the winter. Especially store for planting the following year? I live in Ohio and we do have cold winters. Can I use the ginger that I have grown to replant the following year? Or just buy new and start over (which I would rather not do)? Thanks!

Oh yeah Healy....you could grow some AMAZING ginger/turmeric in that setup! Space them 4-6" apart and you should be fine.

Have you try to leave a few ginger rhizomes in the soil over Winter (that you harvest from) ; Adding few layers of leaves or other stuff on top to keep warm and see if they regrow the next growing season?

100% they will do that and regrow..its awesome! But here in Canada, I cannot do that ha ha, they rhizomes will turn to mush over my winter.

5 gallon can work. 7 and 10 gallons are better. The rhizomes grow all packed together, so a 5 gallon can have 3 plants growing in it no problem

Don't know if this was already answered but is it a correct thought that the young ginger can be replanted to mature in order to have a continuous crop? Assuming it is in a correct environment all year....

Yes, you just keep replanting the rhizomes. The older ones are the ones you want to replant though

Hello, I bought couple of ginger rhizomes from the store and I usually put them in the fridge but this time I forgot them in the plastic bag on top of the counter and some how the bag was covered with a towel ... Found them yesterday and both rhizomes ha sprouted I was happy but now I don't know what to do and what I mean is I live in Canada and spring is far far away 😄 not to mention that the days are mostly cloudy 🤔 ... Any suggestions? Thank you!

Plant them up in some regular potting soil, right at the surface, not too deep.... Should time it perfectly with going outside in the spring!

How exactly do you store it? You said room temperature but does it need to be covered from light?

I haven't found light to affect the longevity at all....only temperature and moisture.

Will it handle persistent 60°F if all other conditions are good? I keep my house on the cold side (though hotter than 60F) for economical and comfort reasons.

Update: you said no less than 21C (70F) - that's too warm. I will be sure to report back on conditions, successes and failures if I grow ginger as a houseplant in my slightly cold house.

You can definitely try if it's super stable.... But it really is a tropical plant. It may grow well, but not produce rhizomes you might find

When you did the second method and filled up the tray with soil, added the ginger, and then covered it with soil, you put it on the heating mat. I didnt see you water it first. Are we supposed to water it? Then add to heating mat?

I use moist medium to begin with...so no watering necessary. :-)

100% you can. I harvest a little bit at a time from the main plant whenever I'm in short supply and it keeps growing without missing a beat!

I wonder if its possible to grow ginger indoors. I live in zone 3, we have +10 C degrees at night in summer. Way too cold for ginger.

Unlike growing from seeds or even a clove of garlic, all the videos of "growing" ginger, don't seem to produce much. It seems like a 1 to 1 result. Put in a piece or ginger and then when the plants grows out all you get back is the same piece of ginger to take out, only with a green stalk attached in addition to what you put in the ground, that doesn't seem like a good crop plant to "grow". Is it just that once you plant it, when you get the same piece back it somehow become "fresher" to use? So you wait all those months to just make a slightly better tasting ginger?

I’ve never see a dry looking piece of newly grown ginger. Always comes out small and yellow like the fresh stuff on the top of your harvest. I think the older looking stuff is the original piece you planted.

Nope, the original stuff that's planted literally turns to either mush or a hollow shell..... Ginger when it's left to keep growing will produce rhizomes with the skin.... Just like potatoes

Take time to research, but coco coir is more environmentally unfriendly than Peet, which largely comes from Canada and IS renewable. Coco coir is highly processed!
