Where I live ginger is expensive so I cut 1 ginger in pieces and plant them. Now I have many gingers. Same for turmeric, but turmeric is really invasive.

Ginger from a supermarket has growth inhibitors on it. Soaking it in water removes the chemical to allow the ginger to grow. Yes, you are right, soak it in water first.

I just recently saw a video where a guy was propagating all his ginger starts from just a few clumps of ginger. Very similarly to getting sweet potato slips - the shoots start at one end of the ginger, with roots attached to it. He just snaps the rooted shoot off and pots that up, and continues propagating more shoots from the same clump of ginger. Sure it might take a while longer, but much more economical too!
@ohinkyfarm8972
@ohinkyfarm8972 Год назад
I’ve tried that and it works but like you mentioned a lot slower. Also I feel that the shoots were slower to grow because they didn’t have much stored energy like the ones with a mother attached.
@joshuahoyer1279
@joshuahoyer1279 Год назад
@@ohinkyfarm8972 I'm learning that right now 😆. I started a couple chunks of ginger for shoots about a couple months ago, and so far have two ginger starts about 18 inches tall with a few leaves on each, and a baby just starting to pop out of the potting mix. But one of the plants already has a second shoot coming up, so that's been neat to watch. Adding heat and light has sped things up quite a bit though.

@ohinkyfarm8972
@ohinkyfarm8972 2 года назад
It really depends. I live in zone 6, and can get equal yield meaning if I sow 5 lbs I will get 5 lbs of young ginger. If I were to grow in a greenhouse then you’ll get much larger yields. The product changed from older Ginger into younger Ginger, the price goes up!

@GodsChild145 9 месяцев назад
@@karencooper6634Simple, let me give you a couple reasons why: 1: you can’t grow ginger from a seed, so this is the ONLY way to grow ginger at home in the garden. 2: it’s much SAFER to grow and eat your own ginger that you KNOW FOR A FACT doesn’t have pesticides on or in it. 3: it saves a ton of money if you like to use Tiger in all kinds of things like a daily smoothie etc 4: even though the store bought items say they are organic, if you research into it, it’s not true! 5: it’s fun to grow ❤ 6: he said he is only getting an equal amount back BUT that’s because he is in zone 6 and growing outside, so for anyone growing in zones 7,8,9 you can grow just 1 tiny piece on ginger and get 10+ pounds back!!! If you do your research you will see what an INSANE amount of ginger 🫚 you can grow from a tiny piece and get a never ending amount so you will NEVER have to buy ginger again!!!

@ohinkyfarm8972

I have found it best to follow the method in the video to get best germination. Buying organic ginger root from the store or from a seller is your best bet, non organic ginger root is sprayed with a sprout inhibitor. You can put it right into soil but I have found it isn’t as quick( sometimes like a month longer).

Heat mats are very important with ginger. That could be an issue, I’ve planted ginger outside without starting it and it took over a month for shoots to even start. Water well when first planting and then make sure soil is dry before watering again. With heat mats and constantly wet soil disease and mold can work against you. I hope this helps !
