What a wonderful tutorial on hydrangeas. This is specific to each type of plant. And at the end you even included the flower names for each type. Would like to see more videos like this about groups of plants like roses and perennials. Let your subscribers see how smart you are.
I’ve found my FAVORITE gardening channel!!! I stumbled on one of your videos yesterday and I’ve been BINGE watching ever since!! Fantastic and thorough information in each one!! Love it!! Thank you so much!!!
Excellent video! My son just bought a 170 year old house with a flowering shrub, 15 feet high and 10 feet wide. Now I know exactly that it is a panicle hydrangea, and how to prune it. Thank you so much!
I stumbled upon your hydrangea videos yesterday. I’m a new gardener and I finally understood the differences between macrophyllas and paniculatas. Thank you for your detailed explanations. Now I know what to get to start my hydrangea garden!
Hi Jenny! This is the BEST hydrangea tutorial that I’ve ever seen. Very informative, thank you for all that you and your staff do. Looking forward to the day “Gardening with Creekside” starts online sales.😊
I enjoyed this video regarding hydrangeas. You're the only person I've watched that addressed the fact that if your night time temp does not fall below 70 degrees on a regular basis, your hydrangeas will not turn pink. I found this out accidentally on Instagram a year or so ago when I commented on a PW post about my flowers never turning the beautiful pink or red...just brown, then drying up. I did think I was doing something wrong. I'm on a bit of a crusade with PW about this. This information definitely needs to be on the hang tag of each plant. When you see the picture on the tag of a mature plant, and it states that it will grow in your zone, you buy it because of that beautiful picture...looking forward to the time when yours will look like that. I think I purchased three different panicle hydrangeas before finding that out. I follow you and Garden Answer, along with a few others. While GA is in zone 6 like me, it's more desert-like. Your zone 7B certainly is closer to the hot, humid summers we have in the southern third of Indiana. While viewing the hydrangea video, I noticed little, if any, pest damage and no yellowing leaves. I have both. Do you spray for pests before you see damage? With the yellow leaves, I can never figure out if it's too much or too little water. Japanese beetles have arrived...saw my first this morning, so here we go... Thanks for all your educational videos. I love watching and trying to become a better gardener. Your down-to-earth style is very appealing.
Thank you for explaining all about the hydrangeas I live in North Alabama and I love hydrangeas if you’re a Southerner you have to have hydrangea in your yard and a crêpe myrtle and a magnolia and it is just so southern and I love all of your videos God bless you
Hello, Jenny❤. I watched this very informative video before but watching again for remedial help in my garden. Thank you for keeping it in the lineup!! Love ya❤!
Best info on hydrangeas I’ve seen. I moved to zone 5 and bought big leaf hydrangeas that’s said to zone 5. I had them for years in zone 7 so I knew not to trim as they grow on old wood. However they die back to the ground in winter in zone 5. I found out the roots make it in zone 5 but the old growth will die back, so unless mild winter they will not flower. Lesson learned they are being dug up put in pots for garage overwintering and Annabella’s are being planted. I love my panicles they grow well here too 😊
This was very helpful, thank you. Proven Winner’s website has really good resources for hydrangea care. They even have this neat visual guide on how to treat your hydrangea when something seems wrong. 🤗
You've helped me decide which hydrangea to add to my new mixed hedge here in zone 4 b. Limelight's size will be perfect to screen the neighbors' view into my back patio and deck area. I already planted Bobo in front of and between 'Strawberry Shake' hydrangea and 'Black Lace' elderberry. I also planted a coralberry in front of this open spot where the Limelight will go. I have a few perennials and a weeping blue spruce and a dwarf blueberry to fill in this area. I'm going to be on the lookout for a 'Honeycomb' hydrangea. Maybe plant it next year when (hopefully) garden centers will have greater plant selections.
Truly the most informative video I have seen on hydrangeas. So well put together, with extra bonus info at the end. I’m very new here, and I really do enjoy your videos. So glad I have found you!, and I’m not going anywhere! There really are so few gardeners, that I watch regularly, and you guys are now on that list , for sure! I will have to try and watch all of your other videos someday, but I look forward to what you have in store for us in the future, too! I do believe that Jess and Miah, of Roots and Refuge, are moving out your way, or maybe it’s South Carolina?.. You all are such good people, and you all love to teach the rest of us, and we are thankful , and greatful that you take out the time from your very busy schedules to do that for us. Well done! 😁👍🏻🌻🌿
Thank you very much for your informative yet easy to follow directions about these problematic for me flowers. Now I feel more confident because I'm informed. 🎉
Thank you Jenny. I always get confused on which ones need to be pruned and which one don't. I have one big leaf hydrangea that has not bloomed in years and now I know why, it's in full sun. I will have to move him right away. Love your videos, and have a wonderful weekend.
Thanks Jenny! Now that my kids are young adults I have time to garden. I have a lace cap and added a PW limelight and 2 bobo hydrangeas this year. I’ve really fallen in love with their beauty. I already had my garden journal out, I’ve been waiting for this video! ❤️
This was one of my favorite videos, although I love all of your videos. I also liked the planting the bank video because you helped me plan a beautiful plant combination. (azalea with the hibiscus). Please do more 101 videos with different plants and please, please do videos showing us more good combinations. I am not talking about good companion plants. I am talking about good plant combinations that have good color coordination and good textual/form contrast. Thank you so much. You have a lovely home and garden center. I hope to visit your garden center one day.
PS: I have watched my other beloved garden show hosts' hydrangea 101 shows. Yours was the best! From one ex-teacher to another ex-teacher, I can tell you have an educational background.
Thank you so much! And yes, I have an degree in education and taught middle school before we started our family. I knew from a very young age I wanted to be 2 things in life, a mama and a teacher. I never imagined though that I would be teaching others about gardening via RU-vid!
OK, Jenny this really answered my question, I really have the big leaf, the very first one you talked about. I'm a old Nanny Goat, that's what my grandkids and their friends call me lol Thank you so very much for sharing this great information with us.❤❤❤
Best advice on growing zones anywhere (could use it’s own episode because no one talks about the heat tolerance aspect!), as well as terrific information about the different types of hydrangeas!
Love this tutorial..I bought my first limelights this year and I just love them. Can't wait until mine get larger! Wonderful information on my favorite shrubs!
Finally a video where it shows the viewer the direction of where to plant your hydrangeas. Your backyard looks just like mine. I was not sure if I could plant hydrangeas there, I wanted too, and have tried but for me my back yard by the woods is clay and wet. Hostas do well here, I have tried azaleas, rhododendrons and even the blue hydrangeas but they didn't survive. Still learning though. Great information today!
Wow!! This was an excellent video!!! Now I know why my macrophylla did not like my front yard. Too much morning sun. Thank you thank you. So detailed with great information.
I saved this video! 🥰 Thank you so much Jenny. This really helped solidify my knowledge of hydrangeas (which was very basic). My husband and I have been debating on what type we could plant in front of our North facing home which can be shady and now I know. Thank you!❤️
Such a masterful explanation. I wish I had seen this years ago. So often folks “explain” hydrangea care while leaving out key details or using confusing terminology - not Jenny! Great work!
This is awesome! Must be a southern thing, because I understood a lot better how you explained the hydrangeas and when to prune them than any other videos I have watched. Thank you!
I love love loved this video, i enjoy hydrangeas and this have me an excellent lesson. Some things i knew but others i didnt also they way you ended it fabulous, i always enjoy watching you
Better examples and explaining than most, thank you,, im also in North Carolina zone 8b, I think, zip is 28377, anyway, I planted one limelight last year, but its in full sun, I am trying to get more shaded areas in my yard by planting trees, but the one I planted did bloom, but it also did start looking tired in September or maybe even August, luckily we have had good rain this year, anyway, I subscribed
I am so excited to have found your channel!! I am in the Charlotte area as well! I have several hydrangeas and I believe they are the first kind. I have some dried out blooms on them from last year but haven't trimmed them. Can do I that now? I don't mind them and will leave them alone if that's the best thing to do. Thank you!!!
Very informative video ! I have 3 hydrangeas and they aren’t blooming well. I do trim the dead branches off though. I guess I should totally leave the hydrangeas alone. PS When trimming though, I never trim past where the buds sprout out...I just like to clean the plant up some. Hands off for me.
Thanks so much. This video is great. I am so glad I found your channel. Lots of good information, and I DID actually take notes, lol. I live just an hour and a half from you and hope to come see you in the next few months. 3 questions: 1) can hydrangeas be planted anytime until or into fall? 2) will these hydrangeas be available for purchase until the end of summer or into fall? And 3) Most of my flower beds have a maple, river birch, or crepe myrtle that shades the bed. What is the best hydrangea for mostly shade?
Best video in the gardening world. Huge hug from me to you. My little lime stems are flopping on the ground due to the big blooms. I am very sad for my little lime.
Thank you, very helpful ! Can you believe the fellow who mows my lawn took it upon himself to prune my Big Leaf Hydrangea (which was about 5 feet tall) ... he cut it down to about 10 inches tall, I kid you not. He did that last fall. Since then it has grown to about 4 feet tall again ... but, of course, no blooms this year. Thankfully I watched this video and know that if I want blooms next year I shouldn't touch it.
I didn't know what to think. It happened around Halloween and I had been out of town. I wondered if it was some kind of bad Halloween prank but that didn't make sense because the kids around here are all really nice. I even wondered if I had too much wine to drink one night and done it myself and forgot about it! But that didn't make sense, either, because I would have never trimmed the bush like THAT! And, actually, the fellow who did this had been assisting my main lawn-care guy and had gradually been doing more of the work... so when the main guy was contacted and questioned he was like, "No, I would never cut someone's shrubs." But apparently his up-and-coming man did; when I first saw him, back in the spring, he told me he did, apologized profusely ... and told me how the bush would grow so much better now. And it has grown quite a bit ... but no beautiful blooms. And these were the most beautiful blooms: a heavenly, perfect combination of blue and violet. I hope I will see them again. Btw, I live in Morganton, NC! @@GardeningwithCreekside
Great video! I have a mop head hydrangea and last fall the birds pruned the entire centre of my plant. I’m worried to know how my hydrangea will look this summer 😔
T y for vid it helped greatly I roam and roam at my garden center but do not get satisfying answers in a collective manner as this. All are helpful and nice.
Great information! I was writing as fast as I could!🙂 I love hydrangeas! Never had success before so now I’ve got 3 macrophylla’s in the shade and are small with no blooms planted early this spring and found 1 limelight late this season ! I was so cautious with it I put in in a big pot in the shade! It has blooms! YAY. Should it go in the ground this fall before winter? I’m in zone 8b, East Texas! Thank you so much I’ve really enjoyed all your videos. God Bless
Hi Jenny, I'm a fellow North Carolinian and can't wait to visit Creekside. Excited to find you (via Laura with Garden Answer!). This is a GREAT video on hydrangeas. Thank you!!!! I do have a question as I'm such a hydrangea lover and have planted bobo, little lime, Limelight, old fashioned, and another new one from Proven Winners. I pruned them correctly but this summer, suffered horrible black spot/powdery mildew etc. and NONE of my hydrangeas bloomed except late season after I kept attacking the dreaded issues above. Even then it was a sad, wet (lots of rain), too much humidity summer. How do I best combat all that so I can enjoy my beauties? Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!
Hello and welcome!!! My top recommendation would be to make sure that the hydrangeas have plenty of room around them. You want to make sure that they have good air circulation around & through them to combat our high humidity. Also, for your sun loving hydrangeas make sure that they are receiving the recommended amount of sun. They need the sun's energy to produce flowers. And then of course never, EVER water your hydrangeas from overhead! You do not want to add water to their leaves and flowers. All watering needs to be done at the base/root level of the plant.
@@GardeningwithCreekside Thank you Jenny. They probably don't have enough space around them AND I watered them with a sprinkler sprayer system b/c I don't have my tube watering system installed (in the garage). I think I will dig them up and move them farther out to give them and the roses more space. Also, with you on the darned Japanese beetles. Ate my roses so bad this season. Thank you so much for your advise!!! Can't wait to get some of the new Proven Winner hydrangeas.
If I fertilize (the Limelight in the video has never been fertilized) then it is in the Spring. This year I used Espoma’s Plant-tone but I have also heard that Rose-tone is excellent for hydrangeas. Just a sprinkle around the plant in late winter/early spring and you’re good to go!
Hi Jenny! Love your videos, I'm come here for reference and ideas in my zone since yours is very close to 7a. It would be helpful to know how often to give acidic food to someone like me that has very neutral clay soil, so I can get colors. I feed them 1x a year in early Spring but I just started last year, so mine only have one bloom each plant lol and no colors yet. Thanks Jenny!
