This video is a detailed description of Goshiki Osmanthus. Goshiki Osmanthus is an evergreen shrub with beautiful variegated foliage that turns different color throughout the year. Goshiki is slow growing and can eventually reach 4-5 feet in height and width, but is easy to keep around 3 feet in height. Goshiki is best in part sun or full sun. This is a low maintenance variety that makes a great foundation plant.

Thank you. Your advice was nice and clear. I just purchased a small Osmanthus. I fell in love with its colouring. I'm going back to my garden centre and get 2 more. Totally cool plant!

I just planted 2 of these this summer because of this video! After a couple months in the ground, it has new growth. 😊 I have them in a part of our yard where they’re protected by wind. 👍

I saw one a couple of years ago and thought: "What a beautiful holly." It was in a yard I was working. I have seen a gold and green variegated oak leaf holly....well I finally landed one and your video came up so happy to have this perfect Osmanthus Goshinki false holly to fill a corner of the front bed. Highly recommend. I will be keeping it pyrimidal shaped.

This was so helpful and interesting. I bought two of these 'false holly - Goshiki' at my local hardware store a few weeks ago and am just about to go plant them. Looking for instructions, I came to RU-vid and found this video. I live in a suburb along the north shore of Boston and was surprised to hear you say you couldn't imagine this living in my zone (5b/6a). We have the plants so I guess we'll try; maybe put a cover over them in the winter, and keep our fingers crossed they survive! Thank you for this information and the guidance on how to plant them.

Mines tucked in a corner next to my foundation and has made it thru a overnite low of -17 that happened during a 3 month period where it never got above freezing. I'm in zone 6A and your right the outer foliage insulated the inner

Thank you for such a thorough and no bullcrap video! Answered almost my questions. I'll be replacing a 40 year old Chinese holly that is just way too big and woody! I was thinking two of the Goshiki as foundation plants in front of red brick house surrounded by existing azaleas. My questions: when to plant (fall or spring), how far apart and will my high acid azalea food work with them? I'm in Central Maryland, zone 7b. Again, excellent video! Thanks!

I'm southeast PA Chester County, zone 6 most of the time maybe a zone 7 sometimes; on mulch, I don't use it, don't need to; my garden is very crowded I bought a Goshiki today. Planted it under the outer rim of a Serbia Spruce, west side, next to a garden path in front of some Liriope , it will get PM sun from 2-6. I'll probably wrap it in burlap the first year. We'll see.

Never mind - I read the other comments and I see the rating is B(good) for deer resistance by Rutgers - think I will take a chance and keep my fingers crossed and perhaps spray occasionally when I know the deer is around.

Thanks for your info above. I live in Columbus Ohio zone 6. This is my goshiki osmanthis second winter. We had a 10ish above 0° for just 1 week this winter. I have 5 shrubs and everyone has severe damage though 3/4 of it. I'm guessing due to that cold snap. I didn't know to protect them for winter. The bottom outer edges on each one is still green and undamaged. How do I prune for this spring? Trying to save them.

I live in upstate NY and have the similar winter. I use a clear plastic container box to cover them during cold winter. It worked pretty good.

Jim....wondering how severe..if estimatable...deer will attack this plant in central New Jersey. It’s vsrigated all year coloring is what attracts us to put one in at the corner of the house ...get it up to 4’ or so x about 3 ‘ across.

I've enjoyed several of your videos and value your expertise and detailed information. I'm a gardener, but also a voice coach, and I've noticed that you are regularly out of breath. You are breathing from the top of your chest, probably because you are focused on "performing" and perhaps a bit nervous - despite your obvious expertise! Focus on breathing from your full ybelly, not your upper chest. Relax. It's clear you are a genius!

Hi Jim - you mentioned planting "something purple" behind this variegated Goshiki. What did you have in mind? (I live in Zone 7 - MD - and am replacing a 20+-y.o. holly that's up against my house and in front of a 4'-high bay window, which the previous owner didn't keep properly pruned.) Thanks for any suggestions for something to put both behind this AND in front (i.e. Monkey grass?).

@@JimPutnam OK, based on its projected growth, I assume that the laropetalum is for behind the Goshiki holly? What about in front of the Goshiki?

I love your helpful informarion on yoir videos, but yuo have to work hard in your breathing, because you make me feel like you are having a huge hard time getting oxygen to your lungs and that make me feel sick feeling the same frustration breathing feeling thay I can't breathe either. Other than that, I thank u for all your tips. Hopefully you can breathe in ur next video.
