Hi! The best time to plant gourds here is in May, after danger of frost, when the ground has had time to warm up - 60-70F soil temp. TIP: If you are familiar with the farmers around your area, you could pay attention to when they begin to plant their corn/squash/pumpkins. That is when you should think of planting your gourds (and anything else you are thinking of). Good luck!

***** Hi, I know this is 7 months late, but wanted to answer your question anyway in the hopes if it doesn't help you this year it may next year or at least someone else with a similar question. So, here in Michigan we begin planting crops like corn and beans during early part of May. After danger of frost/freeze which is about May 26 we begin to plant out crops like tomatoes and peppers. It's about June 1 that we begin planting pumpkins and gourds. Of course every year is different so we have to pay attention to the weather. If there doesn't seem like we will have another frost or freeze, even if it's before the normal last frost day, we will begin planting things earlier. Hope this helps!

I have been having trouble growing potato the bugs are getting them and I think that is preventing them to grow do you have any ideas how to keep aways bugs.
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 10 лет назад
ASolvie Gaming Check to see if you have potato beetles. They look like this when they are immature: livingwithinsects.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/colorado-potato-beetle-larvae.jpg and look like this when mature: www.naturephoto-cz.com/photos/others/colorado-potato-beetle-102755.jpg The only way without using pesticides is to pick them off the plant by hand as well as crush any orange egg sacks that are located under the leaves. If you need to use an insecticide I recommend a kitchen insecticide or insecticidal soap. If you need something more than that then talk with a local farmer or local extension office and see if they can help you. Ask about the restricted use pesticide: Assail. Good luck!

You can get an upwards of ten gourds per gourd plant, but on average you will most likely only get 5 nice ones. However, it really depends on what type of green gourd. For instance, bushel gourds may only produce a couple fruit per plant while I've seen martin house gourds produce around 10.
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 11 лет назад
In my experience green gourds don't seem to cross easily with anything else. I've always had green gourds come out just fine even when they were planted along side squash and melons. But it's a different story when it comes to zucchini or pumpkins or the like. The seeds from those plants cross easily and you will get some pretty funky zucchini and pumpkins if you plant the seed that was pollinated with gourds, cucumbers, melons, etc. :) So, you seem good for this year AND next year! Good luck!

I suggest to clip the "bunny ears" of the gourd seed in order for the seed to germinate quicker. Gourd seeds have a hard outer coat that is not easily permeated by water. By clipping, sanding, and soaking the seed you will have a far better chance of germination. Remember when you are starting seeds yourself, you need to try to mimic nature as much as possible. Clipping/sanding/soaking can be looked at as abrasion from being scraped against the ground, rocks, and being soaked by rain.

Thank you so much for this! Seriously, I just don't know how to thank you enough. It's a huge help - I've been burying the things upright and way too deep, by the look of it, without sanding/cutting them or anything. Strange to say, nothing has come of them. I live in the UK, and trying to find anybody who actually knows anything about gourds (and how to grow them) is seriously difficult. All I need to do now is get a little black cat to get in the way, and I'll be good to go :o)

+Bernadette Fox (BFGourdCreations) I have planted gourds and cucumbers and I put the seeds in a big, big pot so the seeds will grow and have much more nutrients. is that ok? P.S. I have 8 plants growing and they fit on by boucony and is it OK to let them grow on my boucony since I live in an apartment???????????????

+kitty p You can certainly grow them in a large pot. Did you plant both gourds and cucumbers in the same pot? They will compete with each other. Gourds are very vigorous growers and may smother your cucumbers. You need to put them in separate pots. Also, not knowing the exact size of the pot, but eight plants sounds a lot to me. You may want to thin them out to just 5 cucumbers per pot and 3 gourds per pot when they have grown enough for you to pull out the weakest looking of the plants. Hope this helps!

This is my first year growing gourds and I have two plants. One of my plants already has eight gourds that pollinated. They're water bottle gourds and they're about as big as my hand. I'm very happy with the results so far. If I use the seeds from my gourds will they cross breed with something else? I've only got the two gourd plants but I have a pumpkin plant and a couple of zuchini squash plants. I sure hope they don't cross breed because I really want to use the seeds next year.

I started growing my birdhouse gourds inside under a grow light to extend my season in Canada. I found the plant barely grew when I finally planted it in the garden... As if the plant were stunned. I did acclimatize them slowly for a week before planting. I got a couple of smaller gourds. I’m not sure what I can do to improve this for next year.

Hi I have 'Collins Long Gourds' from the world record seed site. I've done everything here that you have demonstrated, even placed them in warm air cupboard in plastic tub with tissue ect... and they all just simply rot! When I squeeze them this white yucky stuff spits out lol. I also have fresh bottle gourd seed which I'm yet to try out. I really want to have some this year ;( I only have 1 pack left of the collins gourds which are rare seeds. Im a green finger guy and Ive never had trouble growing seeds. This one is proving my 1st challenge.
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 10 лет назад
Hi, My first susipicions of what the cause may be is bad seed. It's either too old of seed or it was stored poorly or even worse, the seed was never good to begin with. Does the seed feel hard when you press it between your fingers? If it doesn't (it actually feels a bit squishy or hollow) then it's definitely bad seed. But let's say it is good seed. Your other problem could be one or a combination of the following: you have the seed in way too warm of area, too high of humidity, too wet of soil, and no light. Make sure they are in a warm area (not a hot one). Make sure the soil is moist and not wet. Keep clear plastic tops on your pots of seeds so the soil doesn't dry out and so light can aid germination. Try those bottle gourd seeds. Did you get them from the same source as the Collins gourds? You may want to quickly purchase some more seed from a different place. Check out this website (it ships internationally): quarryfarmgourds.com/ordering/ I do hope you can remedy the problem soon and still have some fun with growing gourds this year!

You know what I think you were right..the long gourds seeds were old because they were world record seeds back in 2007. Having said that I gave them another try with the last 3 seeds remaining of the rare 'Collins long gourd' last week with stable temputure of 15-20 degrees. Guess what...they sprouted !! XD so happy to continue and keep this variety going. These long gourds reach 10+ long if grown right. I also managed to grow some giant bottle gourds which grow on the ground like big pumpkins. I now have to carefully think when its a good time to transplant them in pots in greenhouse as they are starting to come out of shell within a week. Fast growing, can't believe it. Thank you so much for the advise! x

@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 8 лет назад
+frogbear02 Okay, first a few questions for you. Where do you live? If you are starting them outdoors then your soil temp may be too cold. But you said you tried this, does that mean you started your seed indoors? How old is your seed? For gourds, freshest is best. They do best started indoors, first scarifying the seed, and then making sure soil does not dry out and stays warm. Corn lasts a few years although I do not recommend starting them indoors. They do best direct seeded after all danger of frost and soil temp has warmed considerably. And watermelon, they last a couple years as well only if stored properly. I use fresh seed every year just in case. I start watermelon indoors as well as direct seed. Both work well, you just need to have a warm soil to direct seed outdoors. Also, you need to make sure soil does not dry out nor is too wet for watermelon. They hate both extremes. Hope some of this helps!
@frogbear02
@frogbear02 8 лет назад
Bernadette Fox Wisconsin, the Milwaukee area. And yes, I'm starting them indoors, just as you did in the video.. As for how old they are, I don't know, I got them online from Reimer seeds, so I'm not sure.. I watered them daily, and had them at about 85 to 90 degrees as well. Maybe they are just old? And ok, I'll do that with the corn, thanks! And ok, maybe water the melons every two days then?
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 8 лет назад
+frogbear02 If you purchased the seed from Reimer this year, I'd assume they are a fresh batch or been tested to be at least 75% germination. Do you have a cover on top of your seed to keep in the moisture?
@frogbear02
@frogbear02 8 лет назад
Bernadette Fox Yeah, they are covered in clear plastic. I have about 5 of them, and another 5 in a plastic ziplock with a moist paper towel, I was experimenting with them, and yep, there were from this year i got them, it said 85% germination rate, but non of them have in 3 weeks, the ones in the ziplock are only about a week on though.

hi, i tried growing gourds indoors, but after they sprouted, their stems would get really long, and the would go limp and die. i grow 2 gourds per pot. is there a problem?
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 5 лет назад
By the sounds of it, they are not getting enough light... long stems are a symptom of being stretched. Put light closer or move outside on sunny days.
@alaskanalain
@alaskanalain 7 лет назад
How long do they take to grow. It's May now and it gets too cold to grow by August. We have over 50 degrees f (night temp) until then. Is that enough?
@BernadetteGourder
@BernadetteGourder 6 лет назад
I do not know the growing season in Alaska, but most gourds take 80 days or more to mature on the vine. Starting them indoors as early as you can may do the trick for you. Perhaps you could try starting from seed in February and transferring them to larger pots as they grow until you can plant them outside.

@gidge13
@gidge13 7 лет назад
I just bought a pack of seeds and it states on the package, not to be consumed. Typically, the edible plants under this family are referred to as squash, and the ornamental (i.e. hard-shelled, inedible, and generally un-tasty) plants are referred to as gourds. Buy a gourd to use as a cute decoration in the house, or buy a squash to use in a seasonal fall recipe.
