I found that 24 hour illumination is required to get the tanks to develop green algae initially. This normally takes a few days using full spectrum light. Then scrap the glass using a glass scrapper or sponge but leave the debris in the tank. Green water usually ensues the following day.

I am hoping my strong southern sun for less will do, I just put a bare tank on the patio and will fill it with water from my pond (which has a fine enough carpet already), I purchased a better LED for when I bring it in, but for now I am counting on direct sun for about 8.

Great video, the information was easy to follow and helped clear the ambiguity surrounding how to get algae to grow. I started a dirted tank with a sand cap a year ago. It initially looked crystal clear, then as leaf litter began to break down brown algae also began to develop. I thought it was detritus from the leafs breaking down and often thought I was going to overload our tank with organic waste. I run two air stones for aesthetics to have air bubbles coming out of the clay pots I used as hardscape. At some point the water took on a green tint but never got thick or cloudy. I always thought it was the Madagascar Lace plant that was too tall for tank and created a canopy of leafs, but the brown algae never really went. It makes me wonder if I had started to get green water... With the tank I am trying to establish a food web in the tank, bacteria, algae, plants, Daphnia, rotifers, shrimp, fish, snails, etc. so my desire for the algae than just appearances, and with the clay pots the brown algae works just as well... Lately the plants have not been doing as well, the only thing I can think of is the water with the tannins and other things is dimming the lights. I have always thought hair algae was different than the carpeting algae... Though what I have known as hair algae will grow attached to things but tends to float suspended in the water like a person with long hair...

If people like goldfish they should really watch this video. It is so informative and normally goldfish experts wont tell you the secrets. They will just tell you to have a tank get some water , have some good bacteria and do some water change then everything will be alright (I hope it will be that simple in reality but it wont). This video makes me feel that I travel to the past and having a lecture in the university.

@knight6605
@knight6605 5 месяцев назад
@@jarettspores8535 yes you totally can! i run a canister filter and overhead sump filter combined, but honestly just make sure to combine that with a really good full spectrum light and you're good. my light's a ledstar c120 so i believe i was able to achieve the green carpet algae faster than i should have, and my setup is right next to a big window of mine so direct sunlight also supplemented the growth

Hi Professor Lei thank you for the very informative video I wanted to share my experience in making this type of tank, initially i have a very very hard time getting things going, went as far as doing 24 hours lighting for a week and not even brown water show up but then i put a bit of algae covered rocks from my other tank and grass algae started spotting immediately after a few days skipping the brown water and green water phase Maybe because it's a really new tank and it's indoor that it's very hard to get algae seeds naturally from the atmosphere but yeah i would recommend getting algae from other places first if you have a hard time

Oh ya for those of you that cant find any suitable LED can try to search for Planted Aquarium FULL SPECTRUM LED. Higher wattage of LED is required probably 1-2 watts per liter of your tank volume. I recommend LED FLOOD LIGHT 20W / 30W / 40W ( may pair 2 or 3 to longer tank). If you can access to taobao, some said 萌虫灯 is very successful in creating green carpet. Cheers

Thanks for the in depth video on how to make a beautiful green carpet! I think I may try this on a mini patio pond! I have two that have very bright green water but it would be great to transition them to carpets

Michael thank you for the feedback. Since your pond already has green water, the light is sufficient. I guess working on filtration and using UV to kill green water. That should work out. Please keep us posted.

@@GoldfishCorner Yes. Surprisingly my heavily planted tank produces more green algae then the ones with just moss and floaters.

When growing a carpet, can it only be on the smooth glass bottom, or can a carpet also be achieved on substrate? Also should tank decorations be added before or after the green carpet? Thanks
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 7 месяцев назад
All decorations should be added after green carpet algae fully developed. No live planet either before or after. Green carpet algae can stick on stones or bottom of your tank, but no sands or other substitutes

Fantastic! Remember anything has a life cycle, the same green carpet algae. Brown algae may grow on top of your green carpet algae. Check your algae everyday, you may simply scrub off brown algae with your hand. Remove any green carpet if it turns to darker color

My hair carpet algae is growing on the filter and anything in the tank too
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 2 года назад
Oh, you got a tough one. Are those black hair algae? Deep clean your tank and filter and then vacuum the water as much as you can. Then redo. The good news is your tank water is fully cycled and contains different algae. All we need to do is to suppress other algae (green water or black hair) but only promote the green carpet alage.

Hello thank you for this video🤎May I ask how will I know if my light is a full spectrum light? I bought one that says full spectrum and it has white and blue lights 21 watts.
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 2 года назад
Normally it should have white and blue LEDs. More reliable way is to check the light spectrum chart, which should be provided by the manufacture. If you don't see the wide range of spectrum chart, don't waste your money

Once green carpet algae is established what % of water will need to be changed weekly? in the final step of the procedure you say a weekly water change but i am not sure how much water i will have to drain?

10-20% daily, 50% weekly

@footticklersofohio6377

Hey Lei. I acheived a deep green water overnight after removing brown algae, water change, removing sediment and adding light. I waited two days before doing a 90% water change and reducing fish. It has since been 6 days and i have seen no evidence of any algae growth on the glass surfaces of my tank. The tank is mostly clear, but a small green tint can be seen. Should i restart and try brown algae, or should i wait longer? Thanks 😊
@GoldfishCorner
@GoldfishCorner 6 месяцев назад
You did everything right except for reducing fish. First adding more fish to keep fish waste in the tank to promote algae growth. If does not work, then redo it from beginning. I don’t see you mention green water. You need to have some green water and then convert it to carpet algae.

Hi my filter cannister has seachem purigen should i take it out? How does a UV sterilizer help with algae carpet growth, I read it kills the green water? I read some people were trying to grow green carpet algae but ended up with cyanobacteria? How can I prevent that from happening?
