Wheat isn't just for farms. If you have a garden plot, you can grow this ornamental, tasty and fun crop (it's easy!).
This is an old video, my first one. At the time, I couldn't find a good wheat grow guide - so I made one!
My favourite way to eat my wheat berries is in this delicious soup: www.hermodernki...

Great video. You may want to cook them and eat them as wheat berries. If you have one of those small crockpots (1 quart size) you can start the cooking process. I use a cup of wheat seeds and 3 cups of water. Start the crockpot the evening before. By morning you will have a great cooked meal. I like eating them with some honey and like to change them for oatmeal.

Your wheat grows quite tall.Use it to make bread and share it with your neighbors.

Hi, can hulled wheat that is sold in the supermarket be grown or should it not be hulled?!
@ellseykaygardens
@ellseykaygardens 2 года назад
Great question! Hulled wheat almost always has some part of the seed removed - usually the outer casing. It’s unlikely to work because of this, but you could do a germination test by wrapping some in a wet paper towel for a week or so and seeing if anything sprouts. If your grocery store sells whole wheat berries, those are much more likely to work. Sometimes wheat berries may have been processed with salt or roasting or something, which will suppress sprouting - so again you can do a germination test before putting any in your garden

@@ellseykaygardens Hi, do you have an Instagram account? I have pictures of our wheat sold! Organic wheat! It cannot be sold in small quantities, it is sold in a ready-to-purchase bag!

Where do you buy your seeds?

I inherited a wheat patch, so I just reseed from what grows the season before - but if my seed supply was suddenly wiped out, I’d look to West Coast Seeds (based in BC)

Peavey Mart in Ontario sells the West Coast Seeds winter wheat. Planted 130 sq ft last September, came up great, will harvest in a week or two.

West Coast Seeds used to be amazing but they’ve done downhill significantly in the last few years since they sold out to an international company (I think Chinese) so I don’t use them any more. I prefer Sweet Rock Farms or Salt Spring Seeds or Rainbow Seeds - all Canadian with generous seed packet volumes and germination rates.

How can I have conversations with you for help me to become a farmer?
@ellseykaygardens

Thanks for the question! I should preface that I am very much a home, urban farmer - not a commercial farmer, I don't have the space or equipment to do large scale growing and therefore don't have great advice for that kind of endeavor! But I definitely have it as my mandate, in running this channel and all "Ellsey Kay Gardens" facets, to facilitate growth and learning! I am happy to respond to specific questions here, in the comments section, and I also have some recipes, blogs and how-to posts on my website, ellseykaygardens.com. If and when I have a large enough subscription base to support it, I will also start a facebook group for gardening and urban homesteading conversations.
