How to grow Hyacinth or Lablab Beans

Try growing this bean in your garden for its tender pods that can be cooked and eaten. Lablab or Hyacinth Beans is a popular vegetable in South East Asian and African cooking. Its delicious pods make great vegetable curries. Remember this bean is different from Lima/Broad Beans which are grown for their seed. Hyacinth or Lablab beans are grown to harvest tender pods which are then cooked for eating.

These look great! I’ve been unsuccessful in growing these! I started them off indoors to I be later transplanted after the last frost! The seedlings grow really well in the beginning but fall over and die despite supporting them with tiny plant supports! What am I doing incorrectly?!

Have your soil tested. Contact your county agricultural agent to get info for your state testing lab. It’s the first step to find out what nutrition your soil contains so, if you need to, you can amend the soil/add fertilizer that is needed. Don’t waste money before testing ….too much fertilizer can be injurious to your garden.

Hi, Thanks for all these wonderful video and tips you give us about gardening. All your videos are awesome. In this video I was looking for something else as the title says "How to grow Hyacinth or Lablab Beans" but the video was more on how to harvest these beans. I have a seedling started indoors for this Dolichos lablab, I was looking for any tips on how to transplant and grows it outdoors. Also it would be helpful if you have any tips on how to set up a trellis for this plant. Thanking you in advance.

The hyacinth bean is an old domesticated pulse and multi-purpose crop.[6][7][8] Due to seed availability of one forage cultivar (cv. Rongai), it is often grown as forage for livestock[9] and as an ornamental plant.[10] In addition, it is cited both as a medicinal plant and a poisonous plant.[11][12] The fruit and beans are edible if boiled well with several changes of the water.[12] Otherwise, they are toxic due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides, glycosides that are converted to hydrogen cyanide when consumed. Signs of poisoning include weakness, vomiting, dyspnea, twitching, stupor, and convulsions.[12] It has been shown that there is a wide range of cyanogenic potential among the varieties.[13] The leaves are eaten raw or cooked like spinach.[8] The flowers can be eaten raw or steamed. The root can be boiled or baked for food. The seeds are used to make tofu and tempeh.[5]

Hi I am from NJ! I grew lablab this season, lush green leaves spread all over, I put compost as fertilizer in my backyard, but unfortunately I did not see a single pod on these lablab plants. So I wonder what I did wrong. I got lots of purple lablab, broad beans?
@navnit3978
@navnit3978 6 лет назад
If the soil is too rich it will produce excess large leaves at the expence of beans.Next season dont put any compost at all until they start producing small beans.In fact for beans it will produce well without additional compost as they are legumes and that produces nitrogen producing nodules on their roots which supply the plant with nitrogen. hope that helps.Navnit from Nz
@h4hir1
@h4hir1 6 лет назад
Go to tractor supply and buy 5-10-10 (40 lb bag for $15) and apply after vine gets 4 to 5 ft...5-10-10 (5 is nitrogen) will start to push flower and fruits by supplying less nitrogen which only increases green leaves.I live in North Jersey and got first-time last year this beans (papdi -Valor and Surti). This year I am growing 13 to 14 vines of the same.
