the best video about Kaffir limes i’ve seen so far! Ours fruited last summer and i kept the seeds. In the winter however we lost it, as we got 5 inches of snow here in Charleston SC. I put about 100 seeds in wet paper towels/ziplock bags and germinated about 50 seeds. Moved to a seedling tray with grow lite and 45 of them are doing great and about 4 inches tall. i guess i’ll be swimming in Kaffirs here in a bit. Will take a while bit am looking forward to this second generation doing well.

The Fruitsof the Kaffir Lime tree add a very nice flavour to food. You can try a peanut butter sauce with one or two limes cut in half on blanched vegetable mix like cauliflower, tauge, and baby carrots. It's perfect in summer and with the peanut sauce even children will love the veggies

Many years ago, I kept putting off eating a grapefruit. No idea why, but it's skin dried & thinned & grew hard, but it wasn't rotting, so I found myself wondering if it was still edible. Cut it open & it had huge seeds & at least one was sprouting. It looked so vigorous I planted it & it grew & grew in my sunroom - which bumped out on the south side of the house, up on a bit of a hill, with plenty of sun - from sunrise to sunset, with all glass windows on 3 sides. Its leaves were double - shaped like some you showed, and maybe 4" long. They were a beautiful deep, rich, glossy green. I gave it some food on occasion, but think it was so healthy due to a compost enriched soil added to a standard potting soil blend with pearlite. It had those big thorns too, & I had to keep it pruned to maybe 7' high & 6' wide maybe, to keep it in check. It got scale & mealy bugs occasionally, but I kept a non-detergent in water spray & physically removed anything i could see - like you, using alcohol - but with a q-tip to apply pressure. Of course, in my climate, & living indoors, it never bore fruit. When I left my BF, I had to give him custody of our pets - a German Shorthair pointer, & 3 cats, & also my grapefruit tree. For years he kept it going, & brought it out on the deck in summer. I have no idea if iit still exists but I've been considering getting a Meyer lemon & now have seen your Kaffer lime tree! Thank you, a very informative video. I will also be growing in containers, as I know that I am growing in a totally unsuitable part of the world (Wales, UK). I have an insulated greenhouse and intend adding heating, so the trees should be spared the harshest of the weather - saying that the greenhouse doesn't suffer any damage. You are correct about the thorns; I have a Yuzu and some of the spikes are about 4cm long, and very strong -in fact they would serve well as a security barrier as no one would want to brush past them - I have been caught enough, working with them! I totally enjoyed this video. I have a nice sized kaffir lime tree and I've started several cuttings from it. Still no fruit. My Indonesian wife loves using the leaves for cooking her traditional foods. I also have a beautiful mandarin orange tree I grew from seed. Still no fruit. Or flowers. I have an asian pear tree that I grew from seed about eight years ago and I got about a dozen very sweet pears last year. I plant Kemangi seeds every year for her. And a lot of hot peppers for her hot pepper oil. 😁
When you decide to take some leaves for cooking just cut off the outer half of the leaf on the Kaffir Lime, it gives the plant more foliage left which is good for both the plant itself and it's aesthetics
interesting video. btw if anyone has bugs on their citrus i really do recommend using the oil type pesticides which are really safe but they should not be allowed to dry and must be rinsed off after use.
I lived in zone 8b and my neighbor had a Meyer lemon tree planted outdoors in the ground. I also had a neighbor who had a huge red grapefruit tree. It is so nice to have fresh picked citrus. You will love it! I enjoy my Meyer lemon in soda water and the zest in desserts like cookies and cupcakes. YUM!
Rainbow Gardens really planted outside!?! Interesting! I’m zone 8b and just inherited a Meyers lemon tree cause it has scale, assuming soft as it’s sticky. We’ll see how it goes! Gonna keep it indoors for the winter at this point.

Wow am new here. Love your kaffir lime tree. I wish you can sell some of those leaves to me. Haha. But I begin to learn how to grow this. Didn’t know that I need this until I can’t find fresh leaves from the store where I live

You should buy a lab steam distillation kit and extract the hydrosol perfume off of the extra kaffir lime leaves and peel you get. I can bet it would be magnificient! Awesome video! My kaffir lime tree is still alive, seed grown from 2013. Living in a zone 4-5 climate, it it still only 1 1/2 feet tall!

It is indoors on the window sill getting eastern and southern light (in 9B, San Diego Co.). I saw in one video that had no audio that the person recommended digging a hole and breaking one egg, shell in all into the soil and covering it up. Have you ever tried this?
Great video! Thanks! I have been growing citrus for years, and I'm just starting some Kaffir seeds I was gifted from a friend.. Hey, FYI, look into transitioning over to a lighter soil mix. There's a ton of different recipes online, but the one I switched over to is: "The basic mix is 1:1:1, pine bark fines: Turface: crushed granite. It's perfect to grow that go 2-3 years between repots." I am able to buy turface from a lawn/outdoor supply company for cheap. Also, I used coarse sand and crusher run gravel instead of granite. My trees are loving the extra drainage.

It was interesting that you water from the bottom, because I had read that you keep the bottom free of water and let the roots drain well, but if it works for you I will give it a whirl. Thank you! I try not to have my plants sit in standing water because it can cause root rot. However, if it takes it up within a few hours, then I know it needs water.
This video was extremely helpful, as I have a large Kaffir lime tree that has gone rogue, and the leaves are not aromatic any longer. It has tons of sucker growing out from the trunk. Now I know I need to cut all those off and find out if it will grow the fragment leaves. Thank for the helpful tips on insects I will check for that also. @@milinlim5211 I have about 40 plants grown from seed and after 1 year, they are about 20 cm tall. They have been outside all summer and looking pretty healthy. I have just brought them inside and they are on every available window ledge and I am fast running out of space!

Someone sold me a Kaffir Lime however I thought I was getting a Kalamansi tree. I quickly learned what I had by the distinctive shape of the Kaffir. leaf.
I was a Chef in a California-Thai fusion restaurant and had a Vietnamese woman as a boss/Chef and we would use the dried leaf and bash it with bird peppers and other spices in a mortar and pestle, so there was no "leaf" or leaf vein to deal with, so using the whole thing is traditional
Great video! What are your potting mixtures and do you use citrus tone fertilizer? I found some information on germination of the seed and it’s instructions were to use 1 part peroxide, 3 part water. What you recommend? Your video was very simple, just damp paper towel in ziplock. I rather try that. Thank you!

Hello. I am an American living in tropical Philippines. I have always wanted a kaffir lime tree to use in my curries and figure I live in a perfect climate for growing one. It was VERY difficult finding the plant but I finally got my hands on a small one. I brought it home, gave it good soil in a container and set it out where it got good direct morning sun. For 4 months it's growth was great. But one day it just upped and died! I am not sure as to why. We recently went thru our wet season and it got a lot of rain so I cut back on watering it. The rain stopped but I didn't immediately increase watering it (maybe once every 10 days). That's the only thing I can think of. One morning I went out to water it and saw that all the leaves had dried out. The branches were GONE! No where to be seen. They didn't just fall off and onto the soil below. They had completely disappeared so I also wonder if an animal intervened. We have fruit bats that can mess up fruit trees but it had no fruit and would a fruit bat go for full citrus branches? Another possibility is that plant was the envy of my neighbors. (I admit that I often said to my neighbors, "I have a Kaffir Tree and you don't") Could they have snuck in to get the branches thinking the could use them to grow their own Kaffir? I have one friend who started growing a kaffir about the same time as me so it's still small. I figure I can sneak over there in the dead of night and make off with it. I am sure he will never suspect me. PS I am a terrible gardener and have no idea what Im doing. Ive killed more plants then I can count. Ive even planted them upside down causing shock and ridicule to rain down on me from my neighbors! But Im slowly gaining skills and improving. My point in saying this is that there could possibly be another obvious reason for my Kaffir's demise that I have no idea about.
