I live in Malaysia and lemongrass was the only thing that would grow in our sandy yard (other than weeds!). 😅 We've had so many huge bushes and gave away most of the harvest to neighbours. (We harvested the whole thing after 8 months-ish and freeze the ones we're keeping for cooking.) Super encouraging for someone who thinks they have a black thumb!
Lemongrass is called tanglad in Filipino! It grows year round here, so I was surprised when you gave tips on how to store it in the freezer. Its really fun to know more about how people in colder climates store or process their herbs! I learn a lot from your channel!
Just wanted to let you know lemon grass is heartier than you might think. I live in zone 8b/9a area, winter temps dropping to the 20’s frequently (we’ve had snow here in south TX 2 winters in 5 yrs). My lemon grass dies back in winter, I cut it down to a stump, leaving it outside in its container all year, and every spring it flourishes back with 4ft of beautiful grass. I harvest from the sides and it smells/tastes great still. 😊
I agree it can take colder weather. We are in Escondido 10a? (We are above the frost line on a hill) and we have several large clumps growing in a 'wicking' raised bed (It has a pond liner glued to the inside with perforated corrugated pipe, at the bottom, for a water reservoir.). Maybe the extra water helps?
@zenofplants1764, it is the same here is South Mississippi (zone 8b/9a), and mine is not planted in a continuously damp area. It comes back from the root clump despite being left unprotected in the ground year-round. 4'x3'.
In the Caribbean we use lemon grass for tea. Smells so good. I recently started a mini container garden, and I am so excited to see how it turns out in the next few months.
My mom taught me that too. Its my favorite flavor of tea now. And if i have a cold i just add some slices of ginger while boiling. Its fragrant and the flavour is amazing
My grandma used to make us lemongrass tea all the time. We’re Mexican so it’s cool to see you do the same thing! I really only ever see people talk about it for cooking rather than drinking. Trying to get my hands on lemongrass now because it’s one of my favorite teas and I miss it

It’s taken over a huge section of my Grammy’s yard! You have to keep it in containers or harvest often. The leaves can be dried and make tea - or fresh leaves of course. So good! I like it combined with hibiscus tea. I also use it as mulch. I need to harvest it for mulch to keep up with its production! In the Caribbean it’s referred to as fevergrass.
I just bought one small plant about a month ago is already double its size. I was planning to keep it like an indoor plant, I hope it goes well. I LOVE lemon grass my mom had a huge one in the backyard, she uses to make not tea in the evening I was in charge of cutting the grass for the tea... Good memories of my childhood. :)
It is also called ‘fever grass’ in the Caribbean. As soon as your mother or granny see you coming down with a fever, you are going to have a pot on the fire with a stalk or two in water to get your tea going.

Here's a storage tip for you guys. For storing in the refrigerator, if you keep it in the fridge just like that, it will dry off real fast. What you need to do is to trim the lemongrass so it's all stem, then submerge it fully in either a bottle/Mason jar/ tupperware that fits. You just have to make sure to keep it fully in water or the exposed parts will get moldy. And don't forget to change the water every week or so. Mine's been in the fridge for nigh on a month and a half and it's still usable. The same goes for ginger, turmeric and galangal although you need a bit more frequent water change for turmeric and it gets mushier faster.
Thank you for posting this! I’m a first time gardener and lemongrass is one of my pride and joys in my container herbs collection. I’d like to grow it next year but they won’t survive in my zone during winter so I’m so happy to know how I can propagate the roots after I harvest them and just keep them indoors till the next growing season.

For years I thought you just used the leaves - it's called Lemon Grass. I dried them to make tea. In recipes it called for chopping it and I just snipped the leaves which were horrible tough and not really good at all cooked. Finally I saw someone using the lower white part and realized how wrong I was. Now I have 2 monster plants that I need to dig up, replant the divisions, and start cooking right. In Florida, (hot/humid) I wasn't sure where to plant it so will just keep it as an edging in the back of my garden. It gets NO sun all winter and 5 months it gets a little bit, then 3 bloody hot months of full sun. I don't know how it grew and I never fertilized - it never needed anything, never sick nor insect damaged. EASY plant! Can't wait to begin using it for real even though lemon grass tea is wonderful. I would love to see you work on chamomile. I can't seem to get it to germinate and really want to get it established for tea. HELP.
I'm the opposite. I cannot get my lemongrass to dol nything , but my chamomile is going absolutely NUTS. I sowed it super densely expecting poor germination... then I had basically a chamomile carpet lol.
I just bought a lemongrass start a week or so ago and it's taking off nicely in a partially shady spot. This video arrived just in time! Gonna make sure to include this little lemongrass start in my nitrogen feedings for other leafy greens.
Just grew some lemongrass for the first time this year and fell in love with it. Easy to care for and grows beautifully in pots. I use the entire plant. I tressed the leaves into little rings, that I put in the freezer, and use them for herbal tea. The green hard part of the stem I dehydrated and powdered. I put this in soups and curries.

This is alarmingly good timing . Just yesterday I started searching lemongrass tips , because my little starter plant I got back in March (in canada) is pretty much the same size as when I bought it and starting to brown . But then I learned how much it hates the cool/cold and it all makes sense now lol.
We use the actual grass part and make lemongrass tea, you just cut the leaves rinse them well, tie them in a little bundle and simmer for a little while, is delicious. Greetings from Panamá 🇵🇦
@@homewardbound6471 I'd go with 6" minimum. I have most of mine growing in 2 gallon pots. It's a type of grass so it will grow in whatever spot it can. All depends on how often you want to water it.
We love using the grass for tea and stem for Indonesian cooking! It’s so beautiful and nice for fencing!!! If I had land I would grow a field of lemongrass 😀
I planted two bits of lemon grass from the super and they are growing really well. I also planted a lot of seeds even though I read that it was harder to grow and they grew too so I have lots of it growing in my polytunnel. It’s starting to get quite cold in the uk now so hope it won’t all die off. Love your videos. Thank you and much love. ❤️
Thank you :) Actually, if you've got the larger stuff, the leaves dry well if air can easily circulate (e.g. on a paper towel on your desk, lol), and make amazing tea dried or fresh :) We got some from the store several months ago, and I shoved the leftover stalks into a mixture of potting mix and compost tea soaked charcoal, and they grew! Been harvesting them for tea, just snipping off the leaves of some, and they keep coming back, thank God :)
As a Thai/Cambodian - lemongrass is essential to cooking most dishes (Kreung) is a must. I love them, they smell so good 😊 and lemongrass tea 🍵 is amazing.

Yes!!! Kevin you are so right!! It is soooo easy to grow, I live in SW Florida and have lemongrass all around my property it is amazing to make lemongrass iced tea in the summer, all you do is boil the leaves for about ten minutes then let it cool add honey and lots of ice it is amazing and good for you, also I use the white part at the end to cook with, such an amazing grass to grow :0)
I live in South Carolina, USA...I have a current lemongrass cluster that stands over 4 foot tall and over six feet wide...love this plant...I use it as a substitute for lemons in my tea, put it in my Thai food, as well as a dry herb sprinkle in almost all my meats

I started some from seeds back in April and they're maybe 8"-10" tall now. Got impatient with their growth so I went to the grocery store, bought a three stalks and plopped them in some water. They're still in the water 4 months later and may stay there until next spring...haven't decided yet.
Literally every video you post is right when the topic is crossing my mind. I’ve been searching for lemon grass here in Michigan for months. No luck. I bought lemongrass seeds last year and loved growing it for mosquito repelling purposes. I’m still hopeful that I’ll find some this year but I’m not sure where 🤔 Love these tips about propagating - I’ll have to try it if I ever manage to get my hands on some plants/seeds.

I just bought a lemongrass plant from Walter Anderson's. I took my dog to the store with me and she nibbled at it haha. Thankfully not toxic to dogs at all!

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I found that they can't handle snowy winter. Ones I left outside all died. But I have one in a bucket that I bring inside every winter. It's in it's 4rth year so far and it's still doing good. I just have to find and learn uses for them
I'm glad that you did this one. I am having trouble with my lemongrass and I've never seen the thing that I have in anyone's lemongrass video. I have 2 plants that I bought from a local nursery. I have these weird spikey round things that are growing in one of the plants. What are they and are they a bad sign?? Also, when I bought them they smelled so wonderful and fragrant. Even the grassy parts, I used in my tea. But now they don't smell fragrant anymore. What am I doing wrong? I have them both in tall pots (approx. 3 ft tall and 12 inches wide at the top). I put 1 ft. of lava rocks in the bottom of the pots (I drilled about 6 holes in each). On top of the lava rocks is about 2 feet of organic potting mix and a little peat moss (just to make my soil stretch further). I've used fish emulsion at transplant and one other time. I've had them for about 2 months. Any suggestions you (or anyone else reading this) can give would be greatly appreciated. 😊
VIDEO SUGGESTION: HOW TO INCORPORATE CAMPFIRE ASHES Because I don't know how to make a suggestion other than commenting on one of your videos. Hopefully you can help! I would guess campfires in San Diego isn't common. Colder climates also use wood and corn pellets for a heat source. Personally, I have a wagon full of ash and am not sure how to get the best out of it. Thanks for doing what you do!

I just happened to start lemongrass seeds for the first time. Above a heat pad in the dark.I successfully another way propagated them since no starts were in garden centers....is to buy them raw from a grocer then put them in a vase of water...they root and you instantly have a taller plant than the seedlings
