This is tasty gourmet reddish-purple variety of kale is one of the sweetest kales with a hint of peppery taste and mostly consumed raw. The leaves mingle nicely in salads, stir-fries, and soups.

It is heartbreaking when we lose plants. But what a lesson for those of us learning from you. We see that plant loss happens to the most experienced people, because weather happens. We can only do so much to counteract that. The most important lesson is to not give up. I know this progression video was done previously, but the timing of this posting couldn't be better. This year the heat is brutal all over the country. It's been a big deal for me, too, up here in South Jersey. I don't remember any other spring and summer that were so unseasonably hot. Your plants that did survive sure are strong and beautiful! Looking forward to some scarlet kale recipes from Nancy!!!

Oh lord if you so right , i tried last year and was a no no in southeast texas . But i am doing it again this year under ingrown lights and then get them out when it's cool ... beautiful kale ! No doubt!
@Happy2Run4Me
@Happy2Run4Me 2 года назад
I’m in East Texas and same problem! I’m going to try covering with tulle fabric (for pests) after it gets cool over a wire semi circle frame and see if that helps. If it doesn’t I may start a few indoors if I can afford the space they take. I’ve grown lettuce hydroponically when it was too hot outside and that worked pretty well. It just takes space but I used a light which was fairly compact. I use the Kratky method. I like it because it’s set & forget (other than lighting). How about you? I’ve had to start a bunch of my seeds indoors this summer for my fall garden because of the heat. Otherwise they won’t even germinate or grow! Disappointing! Then if I transplant them out they get stressed and get eaten shortly thereafter by pests. Sigh. So sad.

Im gonna have to do this. I keep planting and the poor kale (green curly, 1000 head and the mammoth) all were eaten alive by cabbage moth worms and/or aphids. I just had to pull them all again. Only kale that does well for me is redbar kale. Gonna have to cover them. What are you growing yours under?
@Gardeningchristine

@@onemoredoll5791 i used some recycled mosquito netting this year. Next year I may build boxes to put over the beds and I bought some very sheer curtains very reasonably at my thrift store that’ll hopefully work well. Good luck.

I’m going to have to do that too. If the heat doesn’t get them the bugs do shortly after. Some I can’t get past the seedling stage! 😡 I was considering growing indoors because of it (but I really don’t have room inside). I am going to cover it with tulle cloth over wire frames and see if that helps. 🤷🏻‍♀️🌱
@Gardeningchristine
@Gardeningchristine 2 года назад
@@Happy2Run4Me it should work. You still have to check them regularly. If one bug gets in, it can lay a hundred more. If you are direct sewing, maybe start them indoors and get them 6-8 inches before putting them out. Don’t forget to harden off. I almost killed my tomato plants in the spring. They say put them out for an hour or so the first couple days. I did that and they still burned. Next year I’ll put them out in the shade for the first couple days.

@HollisNancysHomestead Год назад
To keep bugs out of the garden is impossible. You can reduce insect activity by keeping the weeds out as much as possible. Watch for insect activity and treat with appropriate formula.
