Absolutely beautiful video Siloe! I was speechless when you mentioned our name, we would be honored to send you some to try! Get with us and we will send you some.
+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living I would love to try it.From what I see it seems to be especially good with fruiting crops. Thanks for watching Luke.
I have watched a lot of garden videos. I do like your informative style. I also have been gardening for 15 years of a lot with sand. It is now a wonderful loamy enriched soil. The process has been a joy
I have an onion that has been growing in a container for 4 years now. I love it, it provides fresh green shoots all the time for us. Thanks for another informative video!
Another fantastic episode. I really enjoy watching your videos, I appreciate all the work you put into the scripting and shooting and I thank you for the information. Keep up the great work.
+suburban homestead I do, but often can hardly bother with all the bells and whistles. If I can get it shot and edited without a kid crawling all over the set and my desk and before it gets too late, I'm happy. Sooo, what's Mirian's day rate? ;)
As always a well done production! I really liked your planting method and learned for the first time that Onions and Carrots make good planting partners :D Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos and for sharing your passion with us Siloe!
I plant the root end of scallions that I buy at the store. I will use the green leaves of the scallions in my cooking and then use the bottom inch or so in my garden. But I have not grown any bulb onions. Great video !
Thank you for the carrot, and onion companion tip! That is really helpful! I started tons of (from seed) of both this year, and wasn't sure what to do with them all. Knowing they can companion grow, just saved many of them lol
The bed did really well b y the look of it Siloé. I have some bunching onions I should really sow out :-/ Thanks for the gentle prodding ;-) Have a great one sir.
Great video on onions, though I don't grow many onions I do always keep a small patch growing in one of my beds for times when I make soup or stew, thanks for the great info.
+The Abled Gardener Thanks. In small gardens it might be better to devote space for other more high value crops. But having a small patch of scallions and chives is indispensable for the kitchen.
Hi, very impressed with your efforts and happy to see such healthy plants. Request you to avoid plastic containers for seedlings and try to re use the soil bags. Organic food is all part of these thoughts!
Beautiful video yet again and I love all the information in it.At first surprised at how serious you got at 4:17 and I felt like I was a murderer! LOL! Phew! I don't till but I do have to dig some. I have serious clay but its getting better. I love the bed shape for your onions. I will try that for the seed shallots I am trying to grow. Thanks!
Curing onions: do you have any good tips? I leave them in the sun when I harvest for the day then braid for storage and hang. But I inevitably get a few that rots....same with garlic actually.....😖
I have red clay for my soil. I thought about renting a roto tiller, and tilling the clay then putting soil or manure on top. Does this sound like a good idea to you? The clay actually seems rich in nutrients.Where you can dig it has worms in it. It's just real compact and hard. We bought this property a few months back it was available cause the home that was here got wrecked after the bad storms two years ago.
I'm generally against roto tilling, but I can understand it's use in certain situations. A broad fork is way preferable for aerating soil. it does less damage but can be tiresome, as it is a hand tool. Roto tillers make worms into a smoothie :-) I can see using it in the first time you want to start cultivating impoverished compacted soil, but if you do that, make sure to add tons of organic matter like composted leaves or other organic soil conditioners. The other approach you can use is the cardboard layering method with tons of mulch added as I show in my video: from lawn to food abundance. It takes a bit more time to get to great soil but it is easier
Use cover crops to loosen and aerate your soil. Check out Gabe brown, Dan kittredge, Dave Brandt, Ray Archuleta. Sorry if I miss spelled any names. There are many others you’ll find on u-tube.
Mmm onions! I love onions. Thank you for this video. I learned some things I didn't know about planting and growing onions. :D Can onion do well planted along radishes? I do like carrots but I love radishes much more. :) - Heidi
+BlackCat2 Heidi, I have yet to try that combination. Companion planting guides don't claim it to be harmful. They do say not to plant onions with peas or beans. But then again this is not really "science" :-)
