How to Grow Onions and Chives From Seed 

Love this channel - only came across it recently but its been the best resource. Ive gone from a few easy-care houseplants to a balcony full of sustainable veggies - cant wait to taste the rewards!

I love the way your garden looks nice and neat. Some gardeners with channels have pots/soil/ everywhere and looks messy. I really like they way things are neat in your video.

So cool to know you could sow seeds in the egg carton, efficient and economical, definitely going to use them in the future. I’m also glad to know so many things about growing globe onions, now I know only to grow short day onions in my CA garden. 😀

Good morning. I have been watching your videos this winter and I am amazed at what I’ve been seeing. I’m 75 and live on the Rappahannock River in Virginia. My question is, may I spray a combination of liquid fertilizers at the same time? I have sandy soil that was once a farm. If you like oysters, I grow around 1,000 each year.

I bought long day onion when I need intermediate. Went back to Baker Creek Farms and found the ones right for my area. I thought I had to wait until next November to plant the seeds. I guess not Thanks! I am excited to get started.

Brilliant idea to grow the seeds in an egg carton flat! Especially when you pressed the other flat on top to create the hole to lay the seeds! Boom!!

How funny, I watch Cali Kim and MI Gardener as well. In fact I usually buy MI gardener's seeds and fertilizer. So glad I found you, I've been binge watching the past hour and already learning more than I knew before. I wasn't planning on planting this year, but after all the craziness I think it's probably a wise thing to do at this point. BTW I have old seeds (some are 4 yrs old) what are your thoughts about planting old seeds? I've been storing them in their original packages (they've been opened) in a sealed tin inside the house. Also I have a bag of worm castings (unopened) from last year. Will it be as effective, or will it have lost some of it's magic?

Great video except for one thing you said and that was regarding grow lights a few inches above the seedlings. That is only good for T-5's or metal halide (depending on your reflector/cooling system). If you are using LED's like I do and you put your lamp close they will burn. And when I say close, I'm talking about 2'-3' above the seedlings. I grow bunching onions under LED's along with lettuce, cilantro, carrots, and basil and made the mistake recently of pushing the lights too close (26") and burned the greens. So, I moved them up to 3' and everything recovered. For watering at first, I use a spray bottle. Today, I got to introduce a child to her first spring onion that was very tiny but a nibble's worth along with a tiny carrot (they have a few more weeks to finish) and she was hooked. She wanted more carrots from the garden:)))

question regarding short day v intermediate day onions. I looked up my latitude and it's 35 degrees. However, I live in Mohave Valley where NV, CA, and AZ all meet on the colorado river. Should I stick to short day onions or could I get away with intermediate?

How do you handle gophers? ?
