I'm going to be growing onions over winter again, haven't chose a variety yet, off to the garden centre tomorrow. Once I'd planted the sets and they had sent up little shoots I then mulched around them. It kept the weeds at bay (mostly) and I had a great crop!

Hello Tony & Eva. Another good video as usual Tony. Don't you think that heat treated onions sets are an admission by the producers that there are problems growing onions from sets? If that's the case, why are they still selling untreated sets? There's no point buying cheaper sets if most of them are going to bolt. That's why I'm going for seed again this year, I usually get better results. HGV

I always use Radar and Senshu (is that how it's spelled?) at this time of year. And, I generally get a pack of each, plus one of garlic, for a fiver from The Range, and not been disappointed. You said you don't expect big onions from the autumn planting, but my summer onions are usually the ones that disappoint, the winter ones grow well, big and tasty. Must be our poor spring and summer weather locally.
