I'm I'm Northern Mississippi. I start mine in December in my raised beds. I cover them with 6 mil clear polyethylene plastic to create a greenhouse and keep them protected until they're big enough.

Awesome idea on starting onions from seed. I'm working on new beds, so will start seeds in March as we have had lots of rain this winter. We still have 30 degree nights with 35- 40 degrees

First time growing them this year, can't wait. My leeks last year all failed, slugs or snails devored them before they stood a chance.

I thought you had to start the seeds and then you got a small onion set that you then planted the following year. Am I wrong about that. Would be great to start from seeds and have fully grown onions later in the year.

Clearly you don't have to do that, because every year I grow onions from seed in early spring, harvest mid to late summer. Growing sets is just one option.

Thank you Charles for the advice not to try it in an unheated greenhouse. I‘d made this mistake and maybe gotten flowering onions instead of nice bulbs🤔

It's very rare that every seed germinates and that's why I say six. If they do all germinate, you can thin down to 4 onions per clump in May and use them as salad onions. Four onions in a clump make for decent size bulbs.

If you sow by the end of April, you will get a smaller harvest, which could still be worthwhile

Do they produce smaller onions when grown in clumps? 🌱 I'm also curious if the yield is larger when one sows in clumps?

Yes, for sure, they are mostly medium size, and with a higher yield because they use space and sunlight to maximum effect.

Nothing. It's no dig soil with 2-3cm compost on top. Soil biology sorts the nutrient flow

Smaller for sure and it depends what you want. You can always remove one or two to eat green, at medium growth stage

We have the CD60 trays. Are they suitable for multi sowing? We just uploaded a video of setting up our garden for the new growing season... Only a tiny garden so alot of planining is happening right now 😊

Well done, and yes, in this video, I am multi sowing the onion seeds into CD 60s, and they go in the ground 4 to 5 weeks later. Very simple and not too much compost needed.

It looks like you've got multiple plants in each planting hole. Do you not need to thin them out?

Yes, John, and you don't need to wash off the compost, at least I would not! It's all good for the new growth after planting

@@CharlesDowding1nodig few, thanks, I'll do it today after work. in Dundee we're a couple weeks behind your zone so hopefully ok. Have to say, I got a range of your multi cell sowing trays last year and they worked out fantastic. I keep learning, I started a few years ago adopting many square foot gardening and Curtis stone methods and now between you, Huw Richards and tony O'Neill plus a few other have completed my knowledge, even though we learn more each year, it's now much less a mystery, I've slimmed down what tools I use and really looking forward to this year.
