I was fortunate to have neighbors much like him. Knowledge like this just can't be bought, ANYWHERE, it has to be passed down from one generation to the next...so my children and I where the fortunate recipients of those generations worth of knowledge! I just can't be thankful enough for that, my girls and I will forevermore benefit from their generosity, and as they lived, the best way to "repay them, is to pay it forward, to use that Knowledge and to teach others to use it as well, to never let it die.

Hi! I have never gardened before in my life :-) I was going to try container gardening and have been looking for guidance which is how I came upon your "channel". I am so blessed to have found you for many reasons. Not only have you given me more courage to actually do this but your faith and love is truly inspiring. I have shared your Coronavirus Gardening Challenge on my Facebook page and hope others will try. Now, I have to get my Neem Oil, 5 gal food grade buckets, some potato seedlings (if i can find some - everyone is sold out) and plant those bush bean seeds I bought the other day. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! God bless you and your family.

If you ever visit the northwest, check the season... seek out Walla Walla onions at restaurants. The Burgerville chain uses only these sweet onions, to make the best onion rings you’ll ever have. Some people have these onions shipped to them after moving around the country. They are perfect for eating like an apple, too. I’m moving onto a larger property soon and hope to plant these ASAP.

Thank you!!! Me too. When folks are learning gardening I like to let them see the entire cycle as much as possible. I want them to know what to expect and watch for when they are growing something for the first time. Perhaps eliminate some of the trial and error we all experience. Hopefully this will encourage folks to garden with a little more confidence. It is really not complicated and very relaxing. Best of luck to you with your garden this year. Have a peaceful Easter Weekend 😇

I saw your video on planting carrots in the buckets and decided to watch while I wait and pray for our friend. Your video is so sooothing, along with the music and the sweetness of you and your wife. You have comforted me in my waiting...you were truly sent by God this evening. I'm watching this video now and noticed from the comment that your son is now with the Lord. My heart goes out to you and your wife, we lost our son also. Not only have we been connected by gardening, but with our sorrows as well. Praise God that I met two wonderful, brother and sister, in Christ. I'm praying for you tonite. Thank you so much for making a stressful evening into a divine connection...Great Blessings to you both, JB

My first gardening memory happened when I was maybe five. My late Dad let me help him in the garden, planting onion sets, much like the smallest onion sets you had shown. Like you, Daddy gave me a wooden ruler and said they had to be planted in a zig zag fashion, as you did. Giving me a pencil stub about 3" long, Dad said hold the metal ring, and poke a hole until your fingers around that ring touch the soil, then put the little onion in the hole gently patting the dirt down around it, thanking the Lord for the little onion. Then he taught me about the inches on the ruler, and told me to plant them in two rows in a zig zag pattern. Oh my goodness, how delighted I was to see the onions grow, and how proud I was when it was harvest time. So many lesson that day, that have stayed with me over five decades later. When my kiddos were small, I we planted onions together, and I shared the lessons their late Grandpa taught me. Sorry for the ramble, but this video brought back some sweet memories. Blessings and grace to you. :)

I love to take a huge onion and take off the dry leaves and cut the top off and cut the inside of the onion and put butter and brown sugar in and wrap it in aluminum foil. I put the shiny side of the aluminum foil on the inside and put it in the oven on 315°. I cook for about 30 minutes. It is cooked and delicious.

Sorry if I missed this in the video or earlier comments, but have you ever topped any of your onions during the growing process? The reasoning is that you want more energy (sun, water, soil nutrients) going into the bulbs, not the stems/scallions. Once the stems are 12" tall, you cut them down to 6." You do that once or twice more as they grow. Next time you grow onions, could you top half a dozen during their growth and report back if you saw any difference in size? Thanks.

Thank you for showing how to cure the onions. As a fairly new gardener, I didn't know they had to cure.

Others have said to prune the onion tops. I noticed that you do not do the pruning. What is your opinion on pruning the tops?

I do not prune onions. I pruned my onions on a video several years ago only because I got a severe thunderstorm with hail two weeks after I planted. Many of the plants were damaged. I pruned them and straightened them up so they could recover. That’s the only time I pruned my onions. Normally, no, do not prune your onions.

@@HollisNancysHomestead Thanks, I only ever cut the flowering part off but that has never done much

@kathyodato8322 yes sir. Once you see flowering, the onion has bolted. Go ahead and harvest it and eat it first. They won’t grow any bigger after bolting and don’t store well.

Hey Hollis, I was wondering, can I grow onions in a bucket or grow bag? My wife and I are starting a garden but we live on a rental property so we are relegated to use other means of gardening.
