I'm a beginner in doing this as I normally just buy planted hanging baskets and plants from garden centres. However the video has given me the knowledge and inspiration to attempt this.
Great vidio, to the point. We've watched a couple of other channels methods that seem as though they would work but not as clear in direction as yours. We've snuck a peek at your library and there's at least a dozen or more that will be watched. We were also impressed when we saw in this video, that 2 years later you are still responding to comments, and not just a few but all of them. Full watch, thumbs up, subbed. TYFS, Mark n Rosa
I grew petunias from seed over the last few years and they grew fine but when I put them in hanging baskets they died after about a month.I also bought some and the same thing happened.Would you have any idea why this would happen.
Hi Anthony. Hanging baskets dry out very quickly as there is not much soil depth so you have to water regularly (I do mine every evening)- give them a good soaking. Secondly the soil quickly runs out of nutrients so you need to give it plant food every couple of weeks. Third - if the basket is exposed to full sun each day then the plants can quickly get scorched so partial sun/shade is best. Good luck with your growing and keep safe.
@@LearnHow2 I grew the petunias in used compost so I am wondering is this why they may have died.Could there be disease in the compost that effects them and not the other plants in the baskets. Regards Anthony
@@anthonydoherty8840 Never re-use compost for growing - as you say disease can build up in it and attack new plants. Also it will be very low in nutrients so plenty of plant food would be required. I spread my used compost around my garden on top of the flower beds.
how often do you water after planting seedlings? and how much water? My seedlings came up but have not grown at all since. And some are dark brown now.
Hi Chris. Just keep the soil moist but not wet soil otherwise the roots drown and the plant dies. (The roots need air in the soil as well as water.) Make sure the plants are getting enough light. Kee safe.
The first thing you should do is mix the seeds with at least a liter of dirt I always use peat moss The same thing with carrots or any other super fine see it allows you to space them nice and evenly
This was super helpful! I'm going to try your method of growing bunches of them in a tray and then pot up. Petunias are so beautiful and come in so many colors :)
Hi Pete. Two methods work well - 1) Spray with fine mist 2) Place the pot or tray in a shallow container with some water in it. The water is then drawn up from below without disturbing the seeds. Keep safe.
This is your idea of instruction? Keep watered? When? How often? How much? I’m sorry, I’m sure you’re a very nice man but the only people this video would help are people already knowledgeable enough about gardening that they don’t need to watch it.
Thank you, these videos are very informative. My petunia seeds seem to have stopped at the third step of this video. They’ve been looking like that for 10 days now, and don’t show signs of growth or strengthening. Is that normal? How do I encorauge them to grow? Thank you!
Can I germinate in the same pot I want to keep the petunias in? Also I get a lot of direct sun and high heat in California, can I germinate in a shady corner when it is hot outside or should I germinate indoors when it is really hot outside? Thanks!
*Hello, I am from Peru in South America, I have tried to sow petunia seeds in containers and a transparent lid, but the seeds do not germinate, sometimes I manage to germinate only one or two, but the rest do not, but they only live a week, and then they die, I don't know what to do, would you be kind enough to advise me please, thank you.*
Hi Percy. The seeds need light (but not direct sunlight) to germinate. Do not cover with soil but place seeds on the soil surface. For those that germinate and die I can only offer general advice which is usually one of three things 1) too much or too little water, 2) too much or little heat 3) not enough light. Best wishes and keep safe.
@@rwalsh4790 Only water enough to keep the soil damp but not wet. Seeds need air as well as water to germinate so if you soak them too much the water will push all the air out of the soil and they will drown and rot.
@@LearnHow2 thank you for all your advice, your the best. I planted Petunias about 5 days ago and they have germinated and have starting to sprout up. 😁🌱
