dot basecamp . mad man`s gardening: This video shares how to grow radial roots of adenium/desert rose . A seedling is prepared for radial roots and fat caudex . Adenium is an incredibly beautiful plant for flowering pot gardening and bonsai. It has a natural bonsai like look and radial roots will add to this look an outstanding beauty.
Having been stick to pot gardening for more than 20 years, I`ve found no flowering plants as flexible and training tolerate as adeniums. Growing radial roots is very easy . Any one can do it following the video .Only we`ve to follow some rules of thumb:
Cut and dry in Hanging before repotting :
(i) Cut the tap root (main root ) and make a circular path for the radial roots ( horizontally grown ) as shown in the video . Then seal the cut area except the circular path .Roots are bound to come out along the circular path because there is no other options . Now if a circular hard plate is placed under the plant , the roots are again bound to grow along this plate resulting in horizontally grown radial roots .
(ii) Hang the adenium in shade for several days (depends on weather and health of the plant ) before repotting . During this period the plant will have been going thru fasting and it will feel a strong appetite for nutrient. Then as soon as the plant is soiled, it first starts to store nutrient in the caudex out of the fear of another fasting period . Thus the caudex becomes thicker .
(iii) During fasting the plant dehydrates and its branches and roots become soft and flexible. So we can easily bend them to the shape and position we want .
