How to Grow Samphire

Samphire is one of the strangest varieties that we promote on our social channels but it is a variety that we delight in growing. If ever a plant reflected us as a business!

We are based in Birmingham, which is quite far from the coast in any direction and yet for the last few years we have delighted in growing Samphire in our back garden. It requires watering with salt water in order for the plant to absorb that delicious salty taste that we love it for.

We have experienced good results by planting the Samphire plant in a pot with drainage holes and then placing that pot into a tray containing the salt water mix (1tsp to a pint of water). The plant then absorbs the salt into its root system. It's all a bit of an experiment!

The reason that we love growing and selling Samphire so much is that it sums up what we are about as a business. It's fun to push boundaries and to try growing new things. It's even more fun to innovate and grow varieties that perhaps shouldn't naturally grow within the conditions that you need it to.

We just love this plant. It's so cool.

Have you tried growing Samphire before or just enjoy eating it?

I've never heard of this. I'm in Georgia USA but knowing it's a perennial I'm definitely going to have to get this now. I love perennial plants especially edible ones💜 happy growing 💜

Thankyou - I really do want to grow this. I even bought some seeds but couldn’t find them. We had a seafood and samphire risotto at the coast it was amazing.

Good video thanku for the info. If it’s a plant that grows on the sea shores, what growing medium should you use?

Received my three a couple of weeks ago - now in a “trough” regularly topped up with salt water (would add a photo, but can’t) - I am really looking forward to our first meal

I've been told that it's important to use sea salt, not table salt. Table salt often has additives that kill the plant.

Hi, liked and subscribed, thanks for interesting vid. Since you ask, imo, I didn't think of it as looking "otherworldly", as in from another planet, rather as another example of the amazing diversity of Life on this one, of which we are all part of... which is part of a greater whole, the Universe, and in a universe so vast, there may not be another with exactly the same conditions for samphire (or humans) to've evolved (but, who knows?)... But, since watching your vid... Perhaps it is possible that growing naturally as it does between the realms of sea and land, there is a different "otherworldlyness" to it, folklore suggests that these inbetween realms were gateways to unseen dimensions that exist simultaneously right here on Earth, maybe in our collective conciousness we retain the stories... Anyway... apologies for waffling! My question is, the label on the samphire plant I bought yesterday says you should feed them - is this necessary, and if so, with what?

Have you any idea if it's possible to propagate from cuttings?

Great video - demystifies growing Samphire. I thought it might be harder to get going than you describe. Is there a specific soil that you’d recommend? I’d imagined it would need to be a sandy mix.

Hi, sorry, just thght of another question - I have some eco-friendy general potting compost, will this be ok to re-pot samphire in as is, should I mix a bit of sand in with it, or...?

Hi, nice video. I'm based in Manchester and was wondering if I want to start growing samphire, do I buy seeds or the plant? And where can I buy them?

hey there! Best grown from an established plant, (disclaimer: we do sell them, declaring bias there!) but an established plant will get to a critical mass within the season and give you some really good yields
