How To Grow Strawberries From Bare Root From Start To Finish 

I bought Mara Des Bois last year and they all but one arrived DOA. I bought some more this year and they all arrived good. Three of the 20 aren't looking so hot but it's been a 5 or 6 weeks, the rest look great.

I want to THANK YOU, personally, for sharing THIS "type" of IN-DEPTH, core, info! Thank YOU, Dearly! ❤ You can read my other "comment" but in a nut shell... YOU, Sir, WILL "make it" FARTHER than many other, "RU-vid-rs", by KEEPING YOUR "ethics" & integrity"- in tact! I can PROMISE YOU that! "The people", "the citizens" & "the mASSES", WANT & NEED someone like YOU- explaining more, in depth, what ALL goes into "planting", "planning", REAL "gardening". What "obstacles" they MAY/MAY NOT "face", explaining the "WHY" things have to be done a "certain way", etc. Not many, "Gardening Gurus" are doing THIS & EVEN IF they are- ...TOO MANY, are trying to MAKE IT, a "capitalistic", "beneficial"- for THE "RU-vid-r" (NOT "the people"- which, IS where THEY, WILL "lose" people AT) And they, are "act-ing" like THEY, are the ONE & ONLY ones- "giving out this type of info"! Keep your "course" and KEEP doing YOU- the way you ARE- and watch your channel FLOURISH! (I'm telling you- I've studied "human behavior" & "psychology" since the age of 9- while "other kids", were off "playing video games", "playing outside" or "drinking & drugging". These "people" will HAVE TO "find out the HARD way". When THEY "LOSE everything", bc "capitalism" is NOT as "straightforward" as THEY have been "told"/"taught"! Thank you, thank you, THANK. YOU! STAY true to YOU! The "Universe" is GREATLY, "REWARDING" those who DO- those who "stay true" to THEM, keeping their "integrity" & "ethics"- INTACT, without "bending"/"molding" taking "losses"! Its SAD, that thats what HAS TO "happen"- but with the MOUNTAINS, of MIS-information & DIS-information- [so-called] "humanity" IS going to have a very, VERY tough time- getting past the next step- .."forgiving" & "letting IT go"! Staying in "anger", "hatred" & "resentment" is ONLY & STRICTLY, hurting the "individual" holding ONTO the "anger", "hatred" & "resentment". Quite literally. THE "BEST" way I can explain this easier- Grab a water bottle filled over 1/2 way. Hold that water bottle in your hand, arm extended FULLY- for 30 seconds. Not too bad, huh? Now, hold it like that for 3 minutes. A bit "fatiguing" right? Now, hold the water bottle in your hand with your arm extended for 20 minutes. Yeah right! Pffft. Well, try it! It's not easy- is IT?! Think of that water bottle- instead, as YOUR EMOTIONS. What happens when you hold onto that water bottle (your emotions) longer and longer? Your arm, gets heavier and makes YOU "feel" fatigued, doesn't it? The same concept goes for your OWN, EMOTIONS! Now, remember this, when you go through your day to day life. I watched this in a "TedX" video but they didn't explain it very well. I just summed it up. With more & MORE "Humans", having this knowledge- (that, frankly- IS being used against the "people"- in a way that- "Well, if YOU don't have the money- then YOU, CANT "know" or "find out" the information. This is NONSENSE, BUT- millions of people, over the next 2 years- ALONE, WILL make millions and billions of dollars from the "eLearning", "eCourses", "webinars", etc- and THAT "Industry"- (the HYPOCRITE, "industry") WILL BE- "according to 'Googles' stats"- "The 'e-Learning' and 'eCourse' Industries ..will be a "$9.7 Billion dollar industry at the end of 2021 and will increase by about 12% each year, in the future." THAT👆 means, "the people" are looking for those who already HAVE, a specific, "niche-related" (to what THEY want to "know"/"learn") knowledge-based expertise. I THOUGHT about dipping into this "industry", but then- THAT would make ME, A #Hypocrite just like the REST! I can't do that! It goes against MY "Morales" & "principles" & I WONT, "bend" OR "mold" to "society" for ANYONE ELSES "benefit" or "ulterior motives"! I haven't "bent" or "molded" in the last 2 decades- that isn't about to start- NOW!

Where did you buy them from for so cheap and what kind are these? I bought 5 Albion from Costco for $19.

I bought some too, not knowing that they are supposed to have some green on them. The ones I purchased had absolutely no green on them. I soaked them and then I planted them just to the crown but nothing has happened. It’s been three weeks and not a sign of any green yet. I’m gonna try to grow from seeds now. I think it might be too late to find any bare root with green on them where I live.

Thank you for the video!! My wife just bought me some strawberry plants today, April the 28th, and we live in Pennsylvania which they say the last frost is May 15th. She then put them into some water, and now we just put the whole bunch of them into some potting soil. I'm hoping they keep until Saturday just three more days away or so. Yeah. They always say crown but never explain where the crown is exactly. I thought the part where it starts turning green is the crown not the spot where the roots stop.

@@TheMillennialGardener Thank u. 2 of them were VERY droopy. Yep, the crowns were covered. 😔😔. Fixed the issue and a couple of hours later one was much better! Not much of a change with the other one even after waiting overnight. 🥺🥺. Pretty sure it's a goner. I'll keep it planted for a while to be sure.

@@_AmikaC_ the good news is strawberries multiply like crazy. As long as you get some of the plants to take, they will fill in the area you plant them in over time. They are extremely invasive, so wherever you choose to plant them, make sure you're okay with them spreading everywhere. They make an incredible edible ground cover, but they're really bad "companion plants" in a vegetable garden because they'll crowd out everything. I recommend growing them underneath strong fruit trees because it's a way to grow two fruits in the exact same space and the plants don't compete with each other because the strawberries feed shallow and the fruit trees feed deeply.

I worked on a farm growing up as well for almost all my teenage years. So many people think food just magically appears on grocery store shelves. It's very important to have knowledge of the entire process - that goes for fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, etc. - it isn't easy and it doesn't come cheap. Even a simple herb garden helps put it into perspective, so I encourage everyone to grow whatever they can no matter how big or how small.

Yes, I placed 2 watermelons in the 20 gallon grow bag. They were the sugar baby varieties, which are a little smaller. They performed very well sharing a space. They're a veteran-owned nursery local to me in NC. The asparagus and strawberry roots I received were ABSURD. HUGE! And 2 weeks later, the asparagus are almost all up and strawberries ready for transplant already. I have the products linked in my Amazon Storefront if you're interested. They also sell direct over their website. The size of these roots compared to what you get at Walmart are crazy. They're massive.

So, i juwt got mine from walmart, you do have to be careful because they can have a few duds in the pack. But most already have green tops. Some dont, but most of mike did already, and i potted them up and i have a nice grow room in my basement and im starting them there while i wait for the temps to get a little warmer. Therw doing awesome though. I let them soak overnight and within a day they had new growth coming off of them. The root systems are nice on them and even if i get a dud or two in the pack, 8 for only 4 bucks is still a great deal.

They have everbearing and june bearing, itll say on the front, just make sure you check because there mixed up in the containers. My walmart was about sold out of them, they go fast cause its a really good deal. But, there bare root and already have green sprouting, so im happy with them.

Amber D Taylor-Greenhouse I’ve ordered off Amazon twice for my bare roots. I received Albion 3 years ago and had 100% rooting success. This year, I received Quinalt and 24 out of 28 rooted. If you get them from a big box store, you need to get them when they first come in or they may be dried out. I think my Lowe’s got their strawberry roots in in February. I would check Amazon. I’ve had good luck from sellers Hirt’s Garden and Hand Picked Nursery.

Thank you, I appreciate that. But take everything I say with a grain of salt. I make mistakes, too, and I'm an amateur that's always trying to learn. My climate is also probably different, so what works well for me could fail for you. These make great general guides, but ultimately, you'll have to fine-tune some things if your climate is very different. But some statements like, "Don't bury strawberry crowns," are true 100% of the time!

Glad to hear it! I just rooted 10 more and all 10 leafed out within 5 days. It's been 2 weeks and they're all ready for transplant. Keep the crowns high and they practically wake up overnight with some warmth and sunlight.

That's likely due to burying them too deep. They're better off "too high" than too deep. They must drain well, too. If you keep that in mind, they should root with a high degree of success.

Adrian Larios did you have an issue with crown rot? If so, a 25 pack of bare root strawberries is only around $10-15 on Amazon and there are so many varieties to choose from. You can always start a new batch.

Best of luck! I've had mixed experience with roots from big box retailers because they sit on the shelves for weeks and dry out. If you find them in poor condition, check out the roots linked in my Amazon Storefront in the video description. Handpicked Nursery sells incredible roots. They're a little more expensive than that, but they're top quality. If they're in good condition, then disregard this comment 😀

I planted asparagus one week ago. I am waiting for the first tips to break the surface to finish the video and I hope to have a how-to on that as well. Asparagus crowns are a little different because you need to bury them, albeit only a couple inches, whereas strawberries can't be buried at all. Their crowns need to be exposed above the surface.

I know the feeling. Mine came out a few weeks ago, but it's been really windy here (as usual in the spring), so I had to stake everything. The trees didn't blow much without leaves, but now that they're leafed out they're like wind socks and blow over.

I do not amend my soil with sand, but I live on Sandy soil. You live in VA Beach, so I would think you have good drainage? Strawberries are shallow rooted, so you can just plant them on a compost hill or berm so the water drains away if you need to. You know, there is an initial cost for getting started in gardening, but it eventually pays for itself. Between the exercise, Vitamin D from all the sun, the fresher, healthier better tasting food, etc., it pays for itself. I look at it as thinking of all the medical bills it saves me by having a healthy lifestyle, because meds are expensive 😂 But seriously, the mental health benefits alone of growing your own food…you just can’t put a price on that. And eventually, your fruit trees will begin to pay dividends when they get into full production. It’s like paying into your 401K. The return is worth it!

Container-grown plants need much more regular fertilizer than plants grown in ground. When plants are grown in ground, they can grow advanced root systems that can seek out micro-nutrients. That can't happen in containers, and they get depleted quickly. What's even worse is that every time you water the containers, or it rains on them, the water flushes the containers of nutrients. I find you need to water them with diluted fertilizer regularly. Feeding every 7-10 days with a diluted solution of soluble fertilizer is a good rule of thumb.

I get my strawberry and asparagus roots from a local veteran owned company here in NC. They're about 2 hours north of me, and they're linked in my Amazon Storefront in the video description if you want to order from them. However, keep in mind, strawberries are often hardy to -20F. Strawberries don't lose their leaves here during the winter in coastal North Carolina, and since my roots came locally, that's why there were still leaves attached. If you got your roots from a more northern supplier where the leaves die back, it doesn't mean the roots are any less healthy. The leaves are not an indicator of root quality, but the dryness of the batch is. My supplier gives ENORMOUS roots. The asparagus roots were even better. One asparagus root from my source was larger than all three roots together inside a 3-pack from Walmart, and the cost was the same.

I actually documented the dates for you. The initial date is March 17 (at 0:00) and the final were at April 5 (at 8:16). All that progress was in only 19 days. That's how fast good quality strawberries can root for you if you give them some daytime warmth.

If you were burying the crowns too deeply, that would likely be the issue. They need to be quite high. I have not tried the variety you purchased, so I cannot fairly comment. I grow Albion and Quinault, and both of those varieties are excellent.
