OK, thank you so much for your reply! I’m gonna try them. My local H-E-B had some for sale. I don’t know what kind they are or anything but I’ll plant them and see what happens.
Thank you. I live in Houston, TX. This was great advice as to where I need to put my new strawberry bed location at. And you were correct, “full sun” in Texas can be brutal/fatal to plants in the summer months, even if the instructions say that.
Thank you for your advice to plant it in Winter and water and provide shade. I tried it for the last 3 years and never succeeded because I planted in Spring and the sun fried them in Summer!
I live in Las Vegas, Nv. And I don’t think, they would grow out here. Especially with no shade. I’m having to grow in aero garden. I would love to grow some outside, but worry by May, they’ll get too much sun. Do you think it’s possible
Can't wait to try growing strawberries this fall. Thanks for the video! Apple trees need a second tree of a different variety to cross pollinate for good fruit production. Anna and Dorset Gold do well together in TX.
My original plan was to graft a few Anna apples limbs in to this tree. That way I don’t have to plant a second tree. But I just haven’t gotten around to it yet lol.
I have dogs, I’m sure that helps. But even at night I have never really had any issues. I know we have raccoons, porcupines, opossums etc.. but they have never really been an issue. I do have large rats. That’s probably the most destructive critter I have.
How much sun do you recommend they get? My house faces directly east, so if I put them on my porch, they will get full sunlight until about 1pm. After that, the sun goes over my place.
I would think that would be enough sun. My garden is always changing. My strawberries have "walked" about ten feet over from last year. and my tress are now larger with more shade.
Cold temps have never been a problem for my strawberries. The survived the last couple years of snow and ice with no problem. It's the heat that they don't handle as well.
Hello! Thanks for sharing! How will you be protecting your strawberry patch over the winter? Do they need to be covered if it freezes hard, like last year? Mine are the healthiest they have looked all year right now. It’s their first year. They had shade cover during the summer in a raised bed. Thanks for any info and God bless you!
Hi! I realized I left out a lot of info about my barries lol I may do a second video. I did not cover them at all during the freeze. They were covered in ice and snow. Mine are in the ground, if yours are in raised beds the roots will not be as warm as mine and may need a cover if it’s get real cold.
Hi, just found your channel! My question is, do you plant your garden facing south? I’m a native Texan and I’ve been playing musical plants for years!! My poor husband has planted a tree only to dig it up and move it again😅! We live on a hill in Central TX, North of the River. We have a sloped property and get angled sunlight if you will, and some strong winds. We have three pear trees, the oldest is over 6 years old, not one pear yet. We have three pomegranate trees, one is 8 years old, never has flowered! We have one nectarine, it’s self pollinating & gave us fruit the first year we planted, but never again 😢same with grape vines etc. we manage to grow some veggies, but I wouldn’t say abunduntly😅
My garden does not really face any direction. It’s a U shape. If trees are staying alive but not producing, my first guess would be poor soil nutrients. I basically made my own soil. Deep mulch combined with consistent composting over 4 years. Healthy, live soil is the solution to almost every problem. Protection from wind blowing out of the north is probably best.
@@MyTexasYard Thanks for your reply, we do have very rocky soil, and we did add good soil to the planting hole, but not compost, we have been making great compost for a year now that we have chickens and ducks, and an abundance of MX Sycamore a& oak leaves etc. We do mulch and didn’t lose any to snowmageddon, would you suggest to add compost around the top soil? If so, how often? One of our neighbors has apricot & peach trees and her husband gives them a powdered milk mixture called Nido, it’s for toddlers with lots of vitamins. We are giving it a try.
Thanks for this video. Have you gotten a good production of berries under that much shade? I'm learning that full sun here is too much, but I don't want to provide too much shade either for most plants that need a lot of sun to produce.
I got a pretty decent crop last year. I need to do an update video showing how the plants move over time. I can also thin my apple tree if I need more sunlight under it.
Hi very good information. I just have a question when will be the best month to start from seed if I live in the very south of Texas? And do you recommend strawberries in pots?
You can start strawberries from seed, indoors, pretty much anytime of year. I don’t have any plants in pots, but I know there are many types of strawberries that are advertised as “container” plants. I don’t like the idea of strawberries in pots because I like to keep mine year around and let them expand.
@@MyTexasYard thank you so much for responding. I would like to keep mine year round but will have a limited space area. So I might only transplant 2-3 plants. One last question if I start seeds now when can I plant them outdoors.
I would think anytime through the fall and winter would be fine. I would not put them in ground right before a hard freeze. I think as long as they have a couple weeks to get established, they can handle cold weather.
I do not use fertilizer. I compost constantly. I may get a better crop if I did use fertilizer, but that’s just one more thing to buy and I prefer to keep my garden as clean as possible.
Pill bugs have not been a problem once a plant gets established. So my best defense so far has been to start plants in pots and transplant once they are big enough to handle a little pill bug damage. But everything I planted from seed in ground had pretty heavy damage at first.
Wow. I never DREAMED I would EVER be able to grow a strawberry patch. I'm not clear on how to get started in the fall, when you say it is hard to find any starter plants. Do you mean we can start from seed in the fall -- or what do you mean? Thanks! P.S. Do you grow any white, gold or red potatoes?
I bought most of my plants in the spring, and I just kept them alive year round. So you may have to wait till spring to find them. I do have a white strawberry that I started from seed. It’s pretty cool. I had a decent red potato harvest this year, about 20 lbs. I’m pretty new to white and red potatoes.
@@MyTexasYard I started growing a gold potato that had eyes on it -- and cut it into three parts and let the taters dry-seal for a couple days, then planted the cardboard box way (with the flaps turned in at top and bottom), covering with just a little bit of organic potting soil -- just over the potato pieces themselves, with the eyes pointing up of course -- and then covered with a layer of leaves and covered those with a layer of yard dirt and layered up to the top like that. I've been keeping the soil moist in that box for about 5-6 weeks I guess, and the greens are coming up strong. It will be a couple or few months until I see what happens, but this sure is fun!
I bought a three varieties from HEB. I can’t remember what they were. I’m not sure which ones survived and which ones died. I also have white strawberries I grew from seed.
I have some in my garden. I have Yellow Wonder. They are now over a year old. Mine are under my apple tree so they get lots of shade. I would think you could grow them, but they will probably need shade.
