I've been growing sweet potatoes the exact oppposite - part shade, poor clay soil, loads of watering, and they're still growing great. Says something about the versatility of this crop. One crop that's difficult to get wrong.

Honestly, I've been growing them for the leaves, not the potatoes, and yes, one of my best growing crops. I suggest people try the leaves cooked, I love the taste.

I've heard a few people say that you actually want kind of bad soil. It promotes a weaker leaf/plant, so all of the energy goes into tuber production. If that's true, this couldn't be easier to grow.

We started ours from slips that were mailed to us a few weeks ago. They did not look very happy, so we simply placed them in a cup of well water with a bit seaweed fertilizer and set them under grow lights for about a week. They bounced back, developed new growth and roots. Then we planted them in a 30" deep x 3 x 4 cardboard box. They are loving it! First time, hoping for a great fall harvest! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Growing sweet potatoes is the best plant to grow because it's easy to grow. You can eat the tubers and the tops/leaves. You can put the leaves in a lot of dishes like boiled or steamed and make ensalata, or stir fry it, or add them in Filipino stews like sinigang or nilaga. The tubers are generally sweet, you can just boil them and eat them by dipping in some sugar, or frying sweet potato slices and sprinkes sugar while frying, or putting them in adobo, sinigang or nilaga.

Interestingly, though sweet potatoes don't like muddy ground, they grow wonderfully in a flood & drain hydroponic bed. So it's not really the amount of water - it's the lack of air. But they are super easy to grow and super tasty. I am currently using them as a groundcover plant for my new berm because the vines spread super-fast and I wanted something pretty and edible to fix the soil/mulch in place as quickly as possible.

Yes, I enjoyed this! I love sweet potatoes but I don't like paying for them. There is no tradition around growing and eating them where I live, so even if the climate here is fine for growing them, they are expensive because so few buy them. This also means there are no seedlings. However, some friendly American homesteaders on RU-vid have posted instructions for growing sweet potatoes from the sweet potatotes themselves so next year I hope I will be able to do that 🙂

I've heard that planting them diagonal or sideways (like, the leaf nodes are in the soil, and the leaves are sticking out) promotes more sweet potatoes, since each node can root (and therefore make tubers). Maybe it's worth a try for any plants you guys have left or cuttings that you can make?

We put two store bought sweet potatoes half buried in a small pot, took WEEKS to get one to start putting out slips, the other just rotted away, maybe too moist? Anyways we just clipped the slips off, took a few leaves off, stuck in water until roots formed, the potted them up in gallon pots to better acclimate to soil in a partially shaded area with ability to harden off in sun once they were comfortable. Once they put on some growth, some three feet long (yeah too long) we planted in the grow bags. Cut some leaves off areas of the long stems and buried them so they would put down roots. Could have prob let them drape on the soil, but wanted to be sure they’d get ample moisture and opportunity to root at those intermediate regions along the length. I didn’t add enough sand to the mix, but will next year. Will see how these do.

So far they look healthy but it will be interesting to see what happens and what I end up with when I harvest them. Edit: Update, so I just pulled them today since nearly all the plants had died back. They are really small (the largest ones are a little bigger than an egg) so I'm going to (attempt to) store them until next growing season.

Interesting that your plant died back so soon. I’m curious what climate you live in? Generally sweet potatoes will die back if they are overwatered which can cause fungal disease. It’s been a dry summer where I live so far and even though I’m watering every 2-3 days they are thriving (at least from a leaf perspective). I’m brand new to vegetable gardening though so who knows how the tubers are doing on my end. I live in New England so I wasn’t expecting much from the sweet potatoes. But the whole plant is edible so I’m still getting some nice use out of the leaves.

@@SuperUsername147 Yeah the more I looked at them I think they were russet potatoes😂 I know I tried to plant a sweet potato a while ago but it didn't do anything but that mixed me up so I thought I planted sweet potatoes but looking at them now they must have been russets🤷‍♀ I do think there was probably a fungal disease because the leaves were looking off, also I'm in an 8a planting zone
