SP's are easy in SW FL. I grow them in 5 gallon pails, water the heck out of them every day, keep tucking the runners back in the pail, and get amazing results. Know I am in optimum SP climate. I started 3 years ago, with 2 slips. When I harvest the SP's, I save 2 - 3 leaves, put them in water, wait for bigtime roots, then start the process again. Easy in my area. I struggle with everything else! So not bragging, just happy I can grow something. They love heat, sun, and water.
@my_flippin_journey

You root leaves?
@cmsag7428
@cmsag7428 2 года назад
@@my_flippin_journey Yes. As mentioned, I have crushed concrete and sand as my yard "soil", so I grow in 5 gallon food grade pails. Many years ago we had a grocery bought sweet potato that started sprouting, I put it in a cardboard box, and let it go. After a few days, I broke the sprout off, and put it in water, not submersed, just an inch above where I broke it off. Kept the water level daily, and after a week, had tons of roots, (was in an east facing window). Transplanted to a full pail, water the keck out of it daily, in full sun, (drill holes in the bottom of the pail). 2 -3 months later - sweet potatoes, not a ton, but enough for 2. When the vines start dying, time to harvest. I cut off the best looking leaves, and repeat the process. On year 4 or 5 of this, has never failed. When harvesting the pail, you will get many small potatoes. They can be made to grow roots by suspending partially in water, with toothpicks. I just re-root the best looking leaves. I am in SW FL, so perfect climate for them. Good luck. BTW - If successful, do not wash the potatoes, just brush the dirt off, and put in a cardboard box, with no light. Will last 4 months, at least.

I'm in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. Our soil is heavy clay. I tried sweet potatoes years ago at our community garden. The catalog seller warned me not to grow them in our conditions. I tried it anyway and they took off. The deer and ground hogs love dining on the leaves (I didn't know I could eat the leaves until this video). When I harvested they were huge and fibrous. Not very good either. So, if I do them again I'll have to go with the raised bed garden with loose soil. It was fun doing it anyway.

Grew 21# of sweet potatoes in three 7 gallon grow bags started with five slips. A little granular organic fertilizer in the beginning, half topsoil/half peat. Had some copper colored bugs chowing down on the leaves for awhile and I hit them with some soapy neem oil mixed up in a sprayer. I think the sweet potato I let sprout go to sprouts on its own did best. I told my kids that the grow bag felt like my late-term pregnant belly when I was expecting them.

I was told that to start slips from a supermarket potato, you need to be sure it is organic, otherwise it may have been sprayed with a sprout inhibitor. Also, another option for sprouting - I had the best luck starting my slips from a potato embedded halfway in potting soil. Much faster!

Right on Emy! Same concept....the only difference is you get to separate the sprouts into many individual plants and space them accordingly. Both methods work, but if you have a larger area to plant or you don't like crowding, collecting the slips first will work more in your favor. Cheers!

My sweet potatoes, well, I don’t know about them yet. I’m in South Carolina, so heat is no issue. But my sweet potatoes were attacked by some little teensy beetle. About the size of a match head, it has a bright metallic iridescence and it flies. I never used any pesticide- I just put the taters in and left them alone. I really just wanted to see what they might do if I neglected them. I believe they would do better with regular watering, but the plan was hands off. They grew, and there are tubers, but I’ll find out the whole story pretty soon. I appreciate the video; it helped, especially the slip growing portion. Your camera shots are always a lot of fun, too.

My first home started slips developed on their own in a warm dark cupboard just as you demonstrated! I tried ordering slips from a "reputable" seed company here in Canada but what I received were pitiful examples and they were dried out and virtually lifeless when they arrived. None of them made it. The slips I've started at home from organic tubers were much more robust. I've yet to time this well enough to get them planted out and I'm not sure I get enough days of warm enough soil here anyway. I'm going to try getting them started in grow bags so I can move them outdoors into the greenhouse once it is warm enough. Good video as always. You got some amazing tubers there!

Question : so is this potato otherwise called a yam, the same as the decorative sweet potato vine with bright green, fast growing addition to any planter? Mine are dying off for the fall, and the potato exposed is looking exactly the same. Yet, your leaves in your video are slight different. Sooo....where lies the truth???

Not a Yam. True Yams are Old World plants related to grasses. Sweet Potatoes originated in the Americas and in the Morning Glory vine family.

Haven't grocery store tubers been sprayed with sprout inhibiting chemicals?

@@pamelamercer1124 Another source is a local farmers market or farm stand. That even works better because you know that the varieties do well in your area.
