Awesome video! I'm passionate about growing plants and have my own small rhododendron nursery in Washington State. My mother-in-law has one of these Monkey Puzzle trees that is about 20 feet high and for the first time it went to seed. I collected the seed yesterday and will try to get these little guys to germinate. Thanks for all the tips!

Good to see this! My little Monkey tree, about the length of one 's index finger, is thriving here in California. Even though the weather out here is like a living greenhouse, with the monsoonal weather pushing up from Mexico, for I realize these ancient plants from Gondwalaland are accustomed to cool enviroments, in the late afternoon, I put them, ( I say "them, for I also have an Araucaria Angustifolia, an Araucaria Biwilldi, and several species of Sequoia on my patio) In the shade until the sun goes down. And then I enjoy the sunset, and day by day, I wake up and I observe these little plants growing. It gives me a great sense of joy to preserve and protect these living fossils.

@@troyellis8692 can I grow it in a tropical climate
@troyellis8692
@troyellis8692 5 лет назад
Dear Surya. I cannot guarantee that the Monkey Puzzle tree will grow in a tropical environment, as they are known to grow in a cool, volcanic environment, notably the western Andes of Chile. I am attempting to grow my Monkey Puzzle tree in the ever changing climate of southern California, and have had success up to this point. If you live in a tropical environment, I would recommend finding an Araucaria Aungustfolia, which is a very close relative of the Monkey Puzzle tree, the only major difference between the two are the slightly longer leaflets of the Araucaria Aungustifolia compared to the Monkey Puzzle tree, and its much faster rate of growth. Both species are gravely endangered, and would greatly benefit planting for future generations. I have a Cycas Cirnalis from southern India planted 26 years ago, and it is doing excellent. My advice is, provide plenty of water, mulch, azomite volcanic powder, acid loving soil, and very good drainage for the roots, for the worst enemies of these rare endangered species is root rot. A good root fungicide is highly recommended. This is my best advice. Good Luck! And happy gardening!

Nice work, I'm surprised though it took you 8 months to germinate, if I understood well. What I do is usually keep them in the fridge for 2-3 months to undergo the so-called "stratification" and then I plant them in a warm and humid spot. They germinate in 1-2 weeks and without giving them any significant amount of light. I do have another issue though with seedlings dying out after about one year as they simply turn black from root upwards. Not sure what's causing this, so if you know how to prevent it I'd apreciate an advice.

Hi Caroline :-D these roots fairly easy but they do take a good few weeks and even months to germinate, they can take up to 6 months or more :-D I got the shirt in a Thrift store LOL! This is a great baby video! Wow, EIGHT months is a long time to wait. How often do you water them, if they aren't growing? Your patience is inspiring. I didn't know that the sprouts were so slow! These trees are often referred to as living fossils, because they are so unique and most of their close relatives have been extinct for millions of years. Take me back to Gondwana! Thanks
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 9 лет назад
***** Thanks so much Bob for your fantastic comment :-) LOL! at take me back to Gondwana haha! These took sooooooo long to sprout, when I made the vid last September, I thought they would only take a few weeks, but Xmas came and went and there was still nothing haha!, I only watered them lightly every week when they were not in growth and when they finally sprouted 2 months ago I was so pleased, and soooooo cute to see them like dinky little pine trees, they have grown much bigger over the last week again since I moved them in to the conservatory, 'the living fossils' are with 'the living stones' haha! Thanks so much for watching Bob and sending you tons of love from Ireland to Tonopah for a magical evening ahead XXXX

Hi there, the good news is these seeds can take up to 6 months to germinate, I know of some growers who totally cover the seeds of these Monkey puzzles too and they will still germinate, I would leave them as they are and if you dont see any signs of germination after 4 months I would remove the seeds to check them and if necessary re plant them again, good luck with growing from seeds and thank you so much for watching XXXXX

Hi Stephen, you can use vermiculite instead of perlite, but vermiculite tends to hold onto water a little bit more than perlite and perlite is a better choice if possible as it gives aeriation to the soil, Happy growing and thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comments and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Thursday XXXX

@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 8 лет назад
+Ed Balls Hi there :-) Spring is definitely the best time to sow them and if you buy your seeds now, then it will be a great time to sow them now :-) I sowed mine in the Autumn and they did really well but Spring is always better because of the warmer temperatures and the longer days which really helps to encourage faster germination and growth :-) you can plant them later on in the year though especially if you can keep them in a warm room and better still if you can give them additional lighting with a grow box or grow lights :-) good luck with growing thesea mazing trees from seed and sending tons of love and heaps of happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic week ahead XXXXX

+Desert Plants of Avalon Thank you very much for your prompt reply. There are different types of this tree. there is Brazilian araucaria and and chilean. what is the difference between them? Ed Balls Hi Ed :-) I am not sure about the difference between the two because I am only familiar with the ones that are here in Ireland, I was lucky enough to find the seeds from my woods here in Ireland, but I wouldn't know where you could buy them from, although I do know that they are available to buy online, but I wouldn't know of anybody I could recommend, you could try ebay though as I am sure there are some good reputable sellers online :-) Sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland XXXXX

Otra voz (versión 2). Actually, it's National Patrimony of Chile. The worst part is, foreigners won't stop smuggling them out of the country but the good thing is, they don't look half as 'drop dead, out of the world gorgeous' as the original ones from Nahuelbuta or the Araucanía. Es que ni siquiera saben que los piñones se pueden comer! Y de seguro, éstos (de contrabando) saben a mieperdapa, es decir, ni siquiera se acercan al sabor de los de mi Chilito. Saludos.
