I grew Super Sweet 100 this season, it will be a staple in my Garden. They are very sweet and thin skinned, prolific producers, and very disease resistant. Thank you James and Tuck 🌱

I actually had to learn how to grow in the ground again because I've always grown in buckets or some form of a container. My neighbors thought I was crazy when I filled 300, 5 gallon panda grow bags and planted like 10 different tomatoes and cucumbers in them. I won't ever do that again but it worked. I like the cactus/palm/citrus soil that miracle grow mixes up but it's a bit pricey but it makes a great container medium. I use to use old sheetrock mud buckets from construction site trash but soon found that food grade is safer to grow and last longer in the sun.

I love your method of growing vertically. With the intense heat that we get in Dallas, I plan on clipping the leading growth at around 5' on my tomatoes and then rooting suckers for the Fall transplants. Let's hope I can get some solid Spring production on my current transplants! Thank you for these wonderful videos.

If the bucket doesn’t say “food safe” on it, what you can do is look for a recycling stamp on the bottom, which should have a number. The number tells you the type of plastic, and you can look up if it’s food safe plastic or not.

I am growing Sun Gold Cherry tomatoes, about 20 plants. I have them in different places in my backyard, in order to test the best light places. I'm in west central Florida and I started these seeds last November indoors. I planted them out about Jan. 1st. I had to use row cover a few times, but they hung in. I'm now beginning harvest period and managing to keep the insects off using a water, aspirin and peppermint soap spray every two weeks when I give them fish emulsion. The plants have canes nearly the diameter of a quarter and I will have to try a stronger trellis for them next year as I don't have trees to string them to. Love the flavor, such a burst freshness and greatness. Give us a garden tour of what you are planting out right now!

I am mainly a container gardener, and usually grow 4 or 5 varieties. One important thing not mentioned in the video is calcium. Most of the common potting soils dont have enough for tomatoes. Make sure to add some garden lime to the mix or you may get blossom end rot. 5 gallon buckets will work. I like earthbuckets best, but I tried 7 gallon grow bags last year and they worked nicely. Sweet 100 is one of my favs.
@ryanwinters8382
@ryanwinters8382 Год назад
Do you use food grade buckets or just buckets from lowes/HD?
@j.b.6855
@j.b.6855 Год назад
@@ryanwinters8382 I mainly use Menards buckets, they are HDPE a food safe plastic. I have a couple of Lowes buckets and they are HDPE as well. Its a food grade plastic, and will have a #2 inside a triangle on the bottom. Though I dont use them for tomatoes, Tidy Cats buckets a friend who does animal rescue gives me are HDPE as well. I use them mainly for carrots.
@ryanwinters8382
@ryanwinters8382 Год назад
@j.b.6855 yeah I have been using the blue buckets from Lowes. So your saying they are safe to grow tomatoes and other beg in them? In your opinion
@j.b.6855
@j.b.6855 Год назад
@@ryanwinters8382 As long as they are HDPE, they are safe according to all the research I have done online. The only leaching HDPE might do is in the microwave, but its unlikely anyone will microwave a bucket. My Lowes buckets are 3 years old, its possible (though unlikely) they changed what they are made of. To be safe make sure any plastic you grow in has a 2, 4, or 5 inside a triangle someplace on it, most are molded into the plastic. 1 is also considered food safe, but only for one time use so I personally would avoid it.

I bought an Orange hat plant from my local gardening place, and didnt know they were determinate, so I paid about 15 bucks AUD for the 20 fruit on it haha. I did replant seeds from one of the fruit to get another round in before winter, not sure if they'll be the exact same but they're definitely dwarf, all 9 are tiny and already covered in flowers.

Like how you mixed up your potting mix, great tip! I live in FL so there is no clay, so I get the dollar stores' CLAY kitty litter, *NOTE: You cannot use used kitty litter! That is the cheapest way for me to buy clay. "potting soil" is like 15 dollars per bag, and not a big bag, doesn't make any sense to buy that. YOU have tons of technical knowledge and common sense. This is a great coincidence, because just last night I was watching your videos on how to grow in 5-gallon buckets. I live in a trailer park in Oregon, and my single-wide is oriented East-West. As a result, only one small strip on either side of the house gets sun....the North side of the house shades half of the yard on that side and has a shop I never use in the way (I might turn it into a grow room....take advantage of a negative!), and the South side has a maple tree crammed in there that shades half of that side of the house. So I only have so much room to work with. Next year I'll put in above-ground planter beds when money allows, but for now probably buckets will do. Thanks James!

Do you have any advice on how to make tomatoes sweeter? I grew the Supersweet 100 last year since you keep recommending it, but mine turned out pretty bland somehow. My tomatoes dried out really fast in the sun and wind, so I kept watering them pretty much every day. I wonder if the taste got bland due too much watering, but they were wilting once I got home from work in the evening so I had no choice. :( Our climates are very different though, I'm in Sweden's zone 3. Have you ever tried self wicking 5 gal. buckets? I have seen 3 different ways of making them so far. They sound good because the tomato will have access to water whenever it needs it. I am in Central California, Zone 9, we get very hot temps here in the summer. If I used a bucket with as many holes drilled in it as you have or even just a few, they dry out almost instantly, so I am considering the self wicking buckets. I really enjoy your videos and I love hot Tuck loves his veges!! I have a Cocker Spaniel that loves bananas and strawberries. I'm going to see how she likes some carrots, etc. too.
