Learned so much with this. Had no idea about the determinate/indeterminate. I only bought one cherry tomato plant this year and a small square cage. I will try to prune it so it doesn't get out of hand like they usually do! Love the large cage you have and will try to find some for next year. Your garden is gorgeous! I was just telling my husband today how lovely it is :).

This is a really great video, Beth. Since I have been growing tomatoes for several years, I didn't learn anything new, but I think that for new tomato growers, you gave them a lot of great advice. The only thing I do differently is, I remove the plant from the peat pots. It seems to take a lot of effort for them for the roots grow through them from my experience.
@InBethsGarden
@InBethsGarden 9 лет назад
Thaneii ahhh good to know about the peat pots and now thinking about that it makes sense! I've been gravitating towards those pots because I accumulate so many of those plastic pots that it was cluttering up my little garden cabin! :) But now that you mention it, I think I'll start removing those and popping them in the green recycling bin, since I assume if they are biodegradable and made from a natural ingredient they could go in there? :)
@Thaneii
@Thaneii 9 лет назад
Yes, they are biodegradable, so recycling them is a much better alternative.

Hi Beth, I just found your channel and am enjoying it very much. I just purchased a tomato plant to plant my own container tomatoes. I was just wondering how you deal with pests and birds? What is the best way to deal with them? Also, is there an alternative to mulch and hay that I could use to retain the moisture? Thank you!
@InBethsGarden
@InBethsGarden 9 лет назад
hkwak002 YAY! Welcome so glad you found me :) For pests I really love this product for organic gardening: www.amazon.com/Bonide-252-Captain-Jacks-Concentrate/dp/B001VJBYMC or a little cornmeal sprinkled on the leaves and around the plants will also ward off any worms. Birds can be tricky but I find they actually aren't that interested in my tomatoes :) And keeping them in containers will discourage them too. For mulch you could also use grass clippings, assuming you don't put any pesticides on your lawn :) Hope that helps!
@hkwak002

Hi Beth, thank you for your advice! I also have a few more questions, my plant is still developing new flowers but the original flowers have wilted, they don't seem to be coming back to life, some leaves are dying too, in this case do you recommend I just pluck the dying flowers and leaves off?

Hello Beth, amazing video! Thank you. I just bought my first tomato plant :) but now I need to buy the container and soil. What soil do you recommend for growing fruit/ vegetables and herbs in containers? and what size container should I buy for my first tomato plant? Thank you and wish you the best.
@InBethsGarden
@InBethsGarden 8 лет назад
+Pamela Ulloa Oh sure well I would say re: the soil you want a good, organic potting soil. Make sure it says "potting mix" since that will have the right nutrients for things grown in pots (plants in pots miss out on the natural nutrients in-ground planting provides) Then make sure your plant has room to grow! Tomatoes take off and they are not happy if they are too confined. So I would say at least a 20" pot. In fact I just started planting tomatoes in GeoPots and they are SO happy! So this could be another way to go :) I have the 24" and it's great! www.geopot.com/products/tan-self-supporting-geopot happy gardening!! :) and make sure you give your plant a form, right from the start! It will be a lot harder to add later on. Happy Gardening! :)
