Lovely video. I'm growing 5 Tomato plants, growing on my window. Sprouted the seeds from Red Cherry from Wilko, transferred the seedlings into plastic cups, they have grown big, a couple weeks ago, transplanted the into cut down 1 litre bottles, have to get bigger pots. They are doing very well. Looking forward to my harvest.
My Mom, the President of our local Organic Garden Club for a number of years, always planted her tomatoes in a trench, leaving only the very tops of the plants exposed. She told me they grow roots all along the buried stem, especially at the leaf nodes. You might try putting another layer of soil around the plants without even having to raise the plants up in the pots... I want to try growing a currant tomato in our sunroom. We live in an area that is known to NOT grow tomatoes very well. Thanks for sharing 💖
That sounds like a good idea. I ended up adding more soil to mine. Good luck with the currant tomato - I'm currently growing a dwarf tomato plant on my kitchen window sill and its flowering - nice to see against the backdrop of the snow 😀
We are currently growing our tomatoes inside! We don't have a great garden, but they get sunlight for around 4-6 hours outside and then the rest indoors. We use tomato feed as well!
I think better to leave plant in position and add soil to top, removing lower leaves. This way roots grow from the newly buried stem and become stronger.
No need to remove the entire plant. Tomatoes love a good root system, pinch off the leaves near the soil level and pile in more soil til you have the desired level. The newly buried stem will push out new roots. You'll have a very happy plant.
A gardener once said, a wise old farmer told her to plant a fresh egg ,mulching it into the bottom of the soil for each plant. Well I have been doing that for 4 years and ,wow. They grow like a jungle. Along with you help I might do better. I have my first cherry tomatoes and 1 beefsteak tomatoe. In my patio. I can't make myself cut them so we will see. OCALA FL.
Hi Georgina. Such a useful video. I am growing tomatoes indoor for the first time. I have quite wide window sills with south facing windows and they are thriving. I am thinking of taking mine out between 12 and 3pm when it gets really hot. I had read about removing some of the leaves which I have done previously. I think I may leave them this time. When you said about the leaves social distancing 😂 I am due to make a video of how my tomatoes are going and will be referring to the tips you have provided in this video. Looking forward to seeing how the tomatoes turn out and whether it does make a difference removing or not. Thanks for sharing xxx
I use a fan to keep plants cool if they are in the window on a hot day. Just have to be careful they don't dry out. By the way, has anyone said you look very much like Dr. Samantha Bailey from New Zealand?
Bigger pots = bigger root system = bigger plants. From personal experience 5 gallon buckets are the best size container for the plants to maximize root growth and grow bigger healthier plants with more tomatoes.
@@GeorginaBisbyDIY absolutely agree with you on that. Its definitely been a challenge trying to figure spacing out. Ive even taken to growing certain tomato varieties upside down hanging from the ceiling just to maximize my space. I shut down my indoor grow this summer and turned my small backyard into a bucket garden lol (the soil is all clay where I live so buckets are best for me) and i rented a storage locker and moved everything from our storage room out to turn that room into a hydroponic & indoor (soil) grow room for the upcoming winter. Going to clone my outdoors shortly to get things started. Its been alot of work rigging up diy ventilation/airflow, more lights, putting in an auxiliary heater/air conditioner and cutting off the vent from the house furnace, water pumps, air pumps but im anticipating a shortages of certain foods here in canada this winter due to all the crazy corona stuff that's been happening this year so the goal is to be mostly self sufficient when it comes to vegetables at least until we're able to build our homestead out in the country and I can produce enough food in the summer to last all winter. Wish I could now but I just don't have the land (or the soil conditions) to do that now
Wow that's amazing! Good for you and good luck. The Coronavirus has forced us to think about the what ifs - I would like to find a few easy crops to sustain us through winter - keep us posted on your progress. I like the idea of hanging tomatoes 😊
one thing i have to ask is why do you take the plant out to add more medium? tomato plants actually benefit from burying the main stalk up the the 1-2 node. was it because the compost was "hot"?
I live in a flat without balcony, please kindly advise what kind of soil shall i use to grow tomatoes and other veggies and fruits indoor? Ive seen miracle grow potting mix but a bit hesitant about fungal and pests issues....Thank u so much
Hi! I found your videos today because I'm starting an indoor garden and then you mentioned aphids in one of the comments..is it easy to rid the plants of any pests? And do they only stay on the plants or do they roam the house? Lol I'm sorry if it's a silly question ,i absolutely hate bugs 😅
We didn’t have much of a problem with them. Cinnamon can deter them and there’s lots of ways to treat them quickly if they do appear so don’t let it put you off. 😊
Thank you so much for your reply! I started my indoor garden this past Saturday and the kale has already sprouted as well as my microgreens ,your channel has been very handy! Thank you so much ❤️
Thanks great video When I put by the window inside do I need to leave window open a little it's getting cold now I'm in NY I'm trying now in October from seed
It depends on lots of factors such as how much sunlight you get but you can certainly try. We grew dwarf tomatoes last winter - I gave the seedlings to neighbours and friends as Christmas presents. Most of my neighbours with south facing windows got a small yield.
@@GeorginaBisbyDIY will my tomato plants die due to cold weather ? I mean winter is on the way here in Japan 🇯🇵!! But there are flowers in my tomato plants
@@Explumberguy my indoor plants have a constant temp of 20 C, CA 70 F. The ones outside, they can reach bellow that in the night, I didn't measure. Both experiments are not giving flowers so far (3 months old, CA .30cm). My pots are in diameter about twice the size of the plants. I saw in other videos people suggesting very larger pots. Could this be a reason? Plants roots need more space? The ones indoor are getting artific LED lights for 10 hrs and the ones outside only 3 hrs of direct sun...both looks similar at this point :)
Wondering why no one explains the issues growing indeterminate indoors? All the sites say only grow cherry tomatoes and other determinate varieties. Anyhow, I have T5 lights, aerogarden and a few other LED and will give it a try! I do have the space inside as well in grow bags. Have big beef and a few other slicers!
