How To Grow Trees From Cuttings
If you trim your trees every few years to make the backyard more orderly, you can use those clippings to plant new trees. To be successful when you are planting tree branches, you’ll need to get those branch cuttings to root.
Some gardeners like to start rooting tree cuttings in water, while others prefer rooting them directly in sandy soil. In either case, you’ll do best to clip pieces of young branches, those under a year old, for growing trees.
You can either place the base end of the cuttings in a container with several inches (7.5 cm.) of water or else sink them into a pot with potting soil. If you have decided to start rooting tree cuttings in water, add water to the container as it evaporates. If you are growing in soil, keep the soil moist. One way to keep the cuttings moist is to cover the container with a plastic bag. Cut a few slits in it first to let it breathe. Fasten the mouth of the bag around the container with a rubber band or string. Watch for roots to grow.
Once you have succeeded at rooting tree cuttings in water or soil, you can transplant the young plant to a larger pot or even to a prepared bed. It’s critical to keep the soil moist during the first growing season so that the new tree can develop a strong root system. The best idea, when you are practicing tree branch growing, is to start many more cuttings than you think you will need. This makes it likely that you’ll get a few healthy new trees.

"When's the best time to plant a tree? Well, it was 10 years ago.". Amen! Been living on my property for 10 years wishing I had done all this back then. Don't want to be thinking the same thing 10 years from now. Great video, and thanks for the advice!

Early spring, use about 2ft long previous years growth, trim stick, leave at least one node on top an one under ground. Sandy soil is best, scrape one side of bottom stick, dip in rooting substrate and plant at least a third of stick. Has to be kept moist, must not dry out. This recipe gives me 85% success. Enjoy and plant away don't delay

Any rooting compound or you let cuttings sit in water smashed with willow branches. The cutting should be scraped lightly on bottom and have a few nubs on them.leave about a foot underground and keep moist. Spring is best. Good luck.

I’ve done something similar with 100% success rate although I’ve only tested it about 5 times. I learned this from my dad. Poplar and Willow trees love water. The area along the back of my property was low and so was often wet or moist. So, with permission from my neighbor, I cut a few branches off of his poplar tree and simply shoved them into the ground. Just pierced the ground with the branch. They all grew well. I believe it could work in dryer spots to, but you may have to water it like he would any transplant until I get started. In what areas though they just take off. Good luck!

If the suckers are coming straight out of the ground next to the main tree they have their own root system separate from the main tree. So you can actually dig those roots out and speed up the process by the rootstock cutting already having roots. Again assuming the suckers aren’t out of the base of the trunk

What's the ideal watering interval when you do cuttings in planted pots instead of water containers? In doing cutting research, I've found if they get too hot the cuttings have higher fail rates. Seems like if you could keep them under 76 degrees less of them would fail.

Some may survive but you need sand not soil. Then a rooting compound that you dip cuttings in then place in a pot of sand that is well drained. Put in plastic bag and wet it, close the bag. Shaded area. Check to see if it is wet. Then transfer after to soil in pot.

America, on the Eastern Seaboard, used to have a tremendous amount of Chestnut trees and Elm trees. A blight caused by invasive insects killed off many of both species of Chestnut and Elm trees. Why not replant these? Chestnut is a good source of furniture quality hardwood. Unsure about Elm. I would also replant Cherry trees for their furniture quality nature and cherries are also healthy in that they prevent strokes by lowering your ureic acid in your bloodstream. .

This I’m sure did not work! Next time try to “air layer” or “stool layer” because this method here really only works with certain varieties and they were all too long for this method of propagation (should only have about 4 nodes) and then your substrate should have been sand and not soil as this I’m sure just rotted all those scions
