NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode we set out a HOW TO GUIDE for CROSSING THE RIBBLE MILLENIUM LINK in PRESTON.
The Link was opened in 2002 and joins Tarleton on the Rufford Branch of the LEEDS & LIVERPOOL CANAL with the LANCASTER CANAL via Savick Brook. It included two stretches of deep tidal river which brings with it a natural danger But, those dangers can be reduced and mitigated against with some sensible precautions.
In this video we look at:
1) HOW TO PREPARE YOUR BOAT
2) HOW TO PREPARE YOURSELF & YOUR CREW
3) WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE DAY, WHAT YOU NEED TO DO AND WHEN
4) DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GOING UP THE LINK AND DOWN THE LINK
Ps at the time this video was made the CRT currently have a helpful Skippers Guide which you’ll find with an easy Google. It’s well worth printing a copy out if you can ahead of your crossing.

Thanks Shaun - funnily enough you came up in conversation the other week - Sue asked who we hadn’t heard from in ages who had watched for a good while and I mentioned your name. Spooky you suddenly resurfaced! Glad to hear you’re busy (in a good way) and hope the weather is as nice over there as we imagine it will be? As for the carpet episode we still get people asking after the carpet…and yes, we’ve still got it as I refuse to let Sue throw it away 🤣🤣

Thanks for that 👍 How on earth widebeams make it through the twists and turns of Savick Brook is a mystery but they can and seemingly they do. Wouldn’t be easy though!!

Very informative vlog. I look forward to seeing you cover the Humber to get into Hull on the north bank and South Ferriby for the Ancholme on the south bank, then the crossing of the Wash. I'm not sure whether a similar vlog would be useful for the Bristol area and the lower Thames.

Excellent, really useful. One question: If you don’t make the Savick Brook sea lock in time on the falling tide, you go to Preston. But on the journey back to Tarleton, what are your options if you don’t make the river lock in time on the falling tide? The jetties at the marina?

Thanks for that comment, much appreciated. That’s a good question. You need a certain amount of water to navigate the Douglas, plus clear the cill at Tarleton Lock so if you’ve had a particularly slow crossing it is possible to run out of time at the Tarleton end too, it’s just more likely to happen the other way around due to the naturally shallow nature of Savick Brook (Savick Brook obviously doesn’t have 9.6 metres of tide to ‘lose’ at any point). If you run out of time at the Tarleton end the only safe haven would be the Marina jetties but I’m not sure what the Marina would charge for an overnighted there.

Just thinking about this further (I’m sitting on the banks of the River waiting for the tide to come in for another future video), you’re talking about a very small window of time here. The distance from the marina to the lock is about 5 mins cruising or so so if there’s enough water to not be beached on the Douglas then there should be juts enough to get into the lock. The more likely scenario therefore if you run out of time is you’re only half way up the Douglas when you run out of water. Then realistically it’s anchor time… Haven’t heard of anyone having to do that though (not saying it hasn’t happened) but heard of plenty of people doing the Preston Docks diversion. Some even choose to do it so they get another experience and they go and explore Preston. You just need to let the CRT know ahead of time if that’s your intended plan so they don’t start looking for a missing boat (they don’t operate Preston Docklands/Marina).

It’s a 32’ trad narrowboat… 8.5 tons…

OK so it’s not the largest boat thankfully. A 20hp engine should be OK in a 32’ boat but just picking up on the point you make about only being able to just flog out 4mph on a canal if you have a rough crossing with a strong tide and headwind I would suggest you’re going to struggle a touch and have a slow crossing. Is the engine ‘strong’ all be it not overly powerful I.e could you work it really hard for 2.5 hours without worrying about it overheating etc?

4mph is what I can push on a river… around 3mph on a canal… yes the engine is strong… can do that all day… it’s in old engine, so I suspect quite a few of those 20 horses have run off.. but it’s a game old beast 😊
