Hammer printing is a fun way to create one-of-a-kind designs on fiber using natural colors from flowers. Plus, it is a simple technique that you can do while traveling to capture a slice of nature from the landscapes you visit. Join me on a trip to The Netherlands where I forage for hollyhock flowers to experiment with botanical printing using the Japanese art of tataki zome . This tutorial will show you how to hammer eco-print with hollyhock, as well as the two resulting effects on a cotton tote bag and its ghost print on the barrier fiber.

When I was studying design we always said design is revision. So yes... gotta have a plan but you also have to be nimble when opportunity presents. 🤩 lovely print!

The color on the carrier is so much nicer than the other printed piece. So if you wanted better printing would you reverse you fabric pieces. Like making the bag your carrier fabric

The cotton barrier cloth is very thin and definitely takes color more easily than the thicker cotton tote. There are so many factors that go into the print result, so yes, you could certainly change your target or barrier fiber. There was also a big difference based on the surface I was pounding on, so that definitely impacted the result. I like how different the two results are, but I also prefer more abstract designs. Enjoy exploring 🌼

It looked like your fabrics were dry. Would it have made a difference if they were damp? Also I know from bundle dying that the backs of flowers and leaves sometime give stronger prints. It’s really all a fun experiment. I did my first hammering last week and got the best results from deep red cosmos although dark purple petunia worked well also. The rest of the flowers were more yellow green and smudgy but I had a good time. Thanks for sharing and I also never thought about doing this while traveling to sample new flora

Good eye and great suggestions! I always work with wet fiber while dyeing, but I rarely do it when I'm doing tataki zome. Makes sense that it could make a difference 😊 I will often do a mixture of both front and backs of the dye flower/leaf, but I didn't on this video. Guess my barrier cloth print is a good example of the backside though! Red/pink cosmos are some of my favorite wild flowers and they printed so well in a steam process I tried here on Color Quest a few summers ago. I'm going to film another video with my dye flowers from my pots including sulfur cosmos, coreopsis, rudbekia, marigold, scabiosa, african daisy and geranium, so I will be sure to mix fronts and backs. Thanks for sharing 💕
