If I can offer a minor bit of feedback, from the perspective of someone just started, one thing I would've liked to learn about in this video is how you deal with corners. Maybe I missed it but I don't think you mentioned that. Also what to do when you've made a full loop along the entire edge of a project with the stitching.

Same here, I learned how to saddle stitch using Ryan's original video. It's great seeing a new update. One extra thing I like to do is start in the 3rd or 4th hole and put back stitches at the beginning of my line so that both ends of my stitch line are the same and have some extra strength. I also have a one-prong pricking iron and will use it to open all the holes (insert in each hole and twist it a little) in the sitch line so that I don't have to try to open each hole with the needles as I stitch.

Great! I‘m working with leather for a while now, but this ist the best tutorial I know on hand stitching. Finally! No further questions. You should stick to your plan and do that school thing. You are really good at explaining. After 17 years of teaching graphic design, I'm sure, one of the most important thing is, never to forget your own pain points when you started out.

Great video Ryan, one thing I learned after ruining every wallet I made in the first few months was you really need a good solid base to hammer your pricking irons on. I was doing mine on a desk with a punching mat and the irons almost always went in at an angle, when I moved to a solid worktop my irons went through straight every time.

Please pleas please explain/ convert the "size92" and "size277" to diameters or inches how Maine Thread and Rtiza categorize their sizes. I am trying to figure out the ideal thread and needle size for sinabroks & KS BP 4 mm round dents... There are so many videos on hand stitching but no one explains the importance of thread and needle size for round dent stitching holes.\ JJ needles only work at sizes 2 or smaller and thread .8mm is too big. I think it would be helpful for more people to learn hands itching and at the same time know that if your needles are larger than John James # 2 and if your thread is larger than .8mm then you will not be able to pass the needle through. Showing thread at different size but in different conversions is just beyond confusing.

One of the biggest problems I think beginner crafters face including myself is actually making the holes perfectly in the first place. I assume that many people have "cheaper" chisels where the machining is bad so that once you hammer it in its nearly impossible to get out without damaging the leather to some extent. To fix this just get a wet sandpaper kit (400-1500 I'd say) and sand the whole thing grit by grit, especially the teeth and inside the teeth. Then once your done use some kind of polisher, I used brasso and some chrome polish. Basically this smooths out the teeth so that you can easier hammer it in and especially take it out like how corter does lol. Besides that the line and keeping it vertical and straight just takes practice.
@David-bf6vt
@David-bf6vt 3 года назад
Just make sure when sanding that you're not damaging the shape of the teeth as you can easily turn a diamond chisel to a flat slanted one lol

Okay, maybe not perfect for a lefty. I use French pricking irons and I punch all the way through. But, only one side has a large hole and that is where I'd like to start from, which is on my right if I have the slant pointing away. So, if they point away, and I start on the right, when I push through the second needle which part of the thread do I wrap around that needle and will it be over or under. If I turn the project around the plane is towards me and then that messes up this whole thing. I have to be able to do it MY way. I had a good way but being new and then trying this I can't figure out how I was doing it to get slanted stitches. Should have stayed with my tried and true way. This way of yours works but not for me being lefty and how I think and what side I want to start on. Sorry about all these words.

Hey! How does a diamond pricking iron fare against the slanting pricking iron? Is the look of the stitch better?
@LittleKingGoods

Slanted looks way better in my opinion. The diamond blows out the back of the leather too much.

I have a pricking iron, but they get stuck into the leather. I suppose I have just to mark the holes and then use a stitching awl?

You can try stabbing the iron into some wax first and then use it on your leather goods.

This is the first video I was actually able to replicate. Other videos skip tiny details they think are obvious. You explicitly mentioned: 1) The slanted holes should be up and away from you. 2) Thread both needles on the same piece of thread. 3) Very slowly and carefully showed each step so I could replicate. Which hand, which direction and what order.

Been trying to figure this damn stitching out and still can't grasp it. EVERYONE has their own method and no one has a "standard" or common way. It would have really helped also to have more than just the angled side view that was provided. A overhead camera as well as showing from multiple angles would have been helpful. On to watching more tutorials I suppose. Literally the past 3 I've watched all did it differently from the next so learning one technique just made learning the next even harder.
