Roundabouts are more popular in UK while most intersections have traffic lights in USA. Driving in Australia, you will find a healthy mix between the two. Roundabouts are a good way to manage low volume traffic but during peak hours, they become dangerous as everyone tries to push their way through a roundabout in heavy traffic. While facing congestion in bumper to bumper traffic; it is courteous to allow one car waiting to merge in front of you (even though not required by the law). Practise empathy and use your common sense than relying totally on rules to guide you. If you are enraged when someone is not doing the right thing, take a deep breath and let it go. Listen to your favourite music or podcast as it will help you to relax. Alway wave to show your gratitude if someone is helpful by slowing down or giving you way. Always enjoy your driving and be kind to others on the road.

While it does seems that rules regarding roundabouts, crossroads, etc., are same for all countries, one should try to observe over the time what is the general approach of the road users. Where I live, people approach roundabouts, intersections, etc., without any regard for rules. However, some seem to believe that major roads always have the priority. Furthermore, road rage could be a serious issue here, and many times following the rules can get one into these. For instance, once I stopped at a roundabout to give way to traffic coming from the right. It wasn't very busy (just a few cars in the roundabout). Meanwhile, a private bus was behind me. It started honking badly, but I didn't move into the roundabout till the right traffic was clear (it hardly would have took a half minute). That bus driver seemingly got so enraged that, as I started to progress, he overtook me from the right with very narrow margin and quickly got to the left, forcing me to brake to avoid collision on the right side. I don't recommend gestures (thank you, etc.) here, as one could risk uncalled for road rage.

It's a shame you mention unmarked crossroads in the types section but don't give any further context about the techniques and code for these types of junctions. Hopefully you'll be able to show how to approach unmarked crossroads in a future video 🙂

I did well yesterday just needed to use clutch control for parrell park but apart from that's all I'm watching crossroads for extra knowledge and to remember to use bay level with my head and shoulder also do I treat crossroads like junctions signal apart from straight on ? You two have been so good and people can be negative like videos are rubbish what good will they do etc well they ain't about you to so that says it all including my teacher said I'm getting somewhere he said yep your working :)

Thank you for the insightful video. At the 10:35 mark, you highlighted the significance of dual traffic lights for facilitating right turns. In scenarios where there is a single traffic light displaying green for all directions, how should one navigate when confronted with oncoming traffic and vehicles making left turns? Specifically, if I'm making a right turn and encounter a car from a minor road turning left into a multi-lane crossing, can I assume priority if I'm turning into my closest lane, considering they need to turn into their closest lane?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 9 месяцев назад
When you get a green light to enter the junction you may still need to give way to others if they have priority over you. Just imagine there are no traffic lights there - who should go first?

We stick to quiet areas with little traffic while we get the hang of controlling the car. Once we feel more confident we venture into busier places. There is usually less traffic in the morning than afternoon so that is worth considering. It is good experience to drive in the dark, or poor weather - but ideally wait until you feel comfortable driving in good conditions. Good luck!

Can you do a video on how to turn right at traffic lights when turning right. My instructor told me to go only when there is space behind the car in front, position straight and then steer to the right! I wasn't getting this correct at all but then towards the ending of the lesson i managed to get it.

Good video but I have a question please answer it. As far as I know there are two types of crossroads the first one is directly facing each other and the other one is slightly to the left or to the right side of each other. So my question is where to position your vehicle when going straight ahead on both situations to the left side of the road or to the right side. When there are arrow signs on the road it's easy to follow but what about on an unmarked road.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 3 года назад
When crossing a staggered crossroad we stop at the Give Way line with the car angled towards the road we intend to go to. For example, we would steer a little left if our new road is to the left - and vice versa. This helps others understand where we are going, and also makes it easier for us to steer the car 👍🏼
@zoeysingh4028
@zoeysingh4028 3 года назад
Thanks so much for the reply now I understand about the position of the staggered crossroads but what about normal crossroad should we approach it from the left hand side while going straight ahead or right hand side if there is no arrow. Hope iam not bothering you thanks regards 🙏

Sorry but just have to point out that you didnt come to a complete stop in front of a stop sign at 6:46. If you make the same mistake during a road test in Victoria, Australia, this would be a critical mistake and usually will end up in the exam being terminated.

@wanderingwonderer5442
@wanderingwonderer5442 6 лет назад
Advance Driving School Also @6:45, I have a question about giving way to oncoming traffic. Is there really a need to give way to traffic coming from the opposite direction here? I mean, if the traffic from the right and left is clear and there is an adequate gap, can't both cars (which are facing each other) move off and cross the main road at the same time?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 6 лет назад
Yes, that is sometimes an option. In that example the other car was just about to go, so I thought I'd 'hang back' and let him go first - but if I was sure they were going straight over (and I wanted to as well) it would be possible to both go at the same time. If there is any doubt where they are going then its better to go one at a time as there is less chance of a collision.

Advance Driving School Thank you, it's much clearer now.

The Victorian test is a little easier than the UK one. You can make up to two critical errors (or just one in the first stage) and still pass. They correspond roughly with the serious faults. There are some other differences: - you must always signal in Victoria, even when there are no other road users, otherwise it's a critical error. By law, you must signal for at least 5 seconds when pulling out from the kerb or a parking space - failing to give way is treated much more harshly and will get your test terminated on the spot - the Victorian test has stages 1 and 2. You go through quieter roads and do some low-speed exercises in stage 1. Not unusual for people to already fail in stage 1 before they are allowed through stage 2 - the pass rate for Melbourne's test centres in 2015 was in the lower 60%. Many people assume it's because the test is 'too easy', but I think it's mainly because you must have done the mandatory 120 driving hours before you can sit the test. Compare this with the UK (35-45% pass rate) where people can sit for the test at any time, even when they haven't got enough experience

Always perfect explanation but I have a question please, when you said in the video that we have priority over the traffic in minor road except when turning right!! What does that mean please? I watched this five times but still couldn't get it.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool

“We have the priority over all traffic in the minor roads, but must Give Way to any oncoming vehicles on the major road when turning right.”
@AdvanceDrivingSchool
@AdvanceDrivingSchool 4 года назад
@Redblade All the traffic on the major road has priority over all the traffic on the minor road. We are saying that when turning right into a minor road, we must remember to give way to any traffic coming towards us on the major road, as we will need to cross their lane.
