@motojitsu I’m a new rider (1 year), but I love learning and I think I bring experience from other fields that I can apply to motorbiking. And also I think ur vids are great. But I think you should dedicate more videos to the topic of wind, I think it is a real danger. My advice I discovered that I think is very useful for riding in the wind is the following: When it is windy, raise your elbows so they are out wide to effectively “widen” your position on the motorbike. Imagine being in a skinny canoe, or a skull for those that have tried rowing. The boat is not very buoyant from side to side. Now imagine a much wider canoe, think of the difference this makes or even a a small tinny. Or even the difference it makes to feather your oars and have them resting out to the sides to maximise your width, it really helps your balance (even on top of the fact you can push down on the water with the oar to counterbalance). Also think of scooters and say dirt jump bikes, the high performance scooters and push bikes designed especially for tricks and jumping have handle bars that are especially wide, which give better control, especially through the air. Similarly I find raising my elbows to almost horizontal to widen my position gives me a lot more buoyancy, and makes me far less susceptible to the force on my bike from the wind. I really find this helpful. Please ppl try and let me know what you think. @motojitsu, I would love for you to let me know what you think, and also do a more detailed video about riding in the wind!!! Pretty please!! Anyway keep up the great videos!!

Seriously, the wind was probably the scariest thing I felt my first few times riding out on the express ways and highways. I did exactly that, squeezed the hell out of my tank and felt at one with the bike. Using my upper body to dance with the airflow. As always, perfect advice.

If there’s a strong crosswind, sometimes I’ll stick my windward knee out. The little bit of drag on the windward side seems to help stabilize the bike and keep it from moving around quite as much.

Corky Akins If you’re on a sport bike (a la me) you should be able to slide your leeward boot forward until the heel locks into the peg, and “squeeze” with the ball of your windward foot on the peg, like you would in a corner.

I've tried that, several times.. it's like using your leg as a sail (like a sail boat) I'm still unsure if it works 🤔 maybe my legs are too skinny 🤷🏻‍♂️ also, I am rather short and I don't wear baggy clothing especially whilst riding. One thing about it though, mentally it does feel kind of cool.. like Ha! Take that! Bustin' out the sail move 🖕🏻 you🌪️ wind

I’ve been riding for a month or two now, beginner bike 300cc super fun around town; but once a nice strong cold wind from a field almost blew me off the road I’ve been really a little more picky on what days are “good riding days” or not.. sometimes, it’s just not a good day to ride 😂

I also find that slowing down a bit gives you more time to react to a big shift, as well as riding in a lower gear (raising the RPM) has the bike pulling and the gusts don’t seems to have as much effect.

I live in the Southern California desert and come home from work in the peak windy times in the evening. I often experience wind speeds of 30-35 miles an hour - I take my car if the forecast is greater than 35 mph - and it can be a daunting task to return home after a grueling 10 hour shift then having to ride home in ridiculous wind. It can be done though.... tuck, tuck, tuck.... stay cool and let your body guide the bike (legs tight on the tank, yes) and keep your eye far ahead to where you want to go. Always remember, all-out FEAR is bad... it can paralyze you, cause you to panic and kill you.... healthy respect for the conditions and laws of physics will get you through. Just be zen and keep your eye where you want to go and you will be totally fine. I wanted to share this because it might help other riders. High winds always freaked me out and I had to learn to deal with them if I was going to keep riding. Just relax and always keep your wits about you and you will be fine. Rubber down, always. 👍

Great advice, happened to me on my way to Monument Valley from Capitol Reef National Park. 35-45mph cross wind gusts. Freaked me out the first hour of the ride, had to pull over and reset my mind, get into a zen place and relax. Made it safe but as you said, I slowed down to 55mph instead of 75 and it was easier to control the bike.

Great advice. I have a lot of problems in crosswinds, with heavy traffic, and spotty windbreaks (walls, trees. etc.) Seems like just when I get leaned in to the wind, something happens to change that and I get blown in the opposite direction. Good stuff! I have a lighter sport bike and I once thought that sport bikes were immune to being blown around - I didn't figure fairings made it worse when the wind blows from side to side. So I guess I was correct in keeping my upper body loose. I also tend to crouch down when it starts blowing hard. I just feel more comfortable controlling the bike in that posture especially.

Ridden everything from Honda 90 to Suzuki GS850G, and they all get blown by wind. With or without fairings but a fairing will certainly grab a bit more wind. It's fine on a dry day as you can play with the wind as it pushes you but in the wet just slow down. (Just like cornering slower when ut rains.) Just keep an eye open for where it's coming from and be ready for it. Check which way the trees are blowing and obviously if the buses and trucks are fishtailing, that's bad but at least you know where the wind is coming from! Remember if you are passing a large vehicle with a side wind to expect a big wind blast as you come out that vehicle's protective area. Sometimes you have to physically 'dive into the wind ' as if cornering as you emerge or you'll be pushed clean across the lane/s. I've seen times where I'm leaning right in against the wind while deep into a left hand bend, think about it! Just keep your eyes open, constantly check ahead and be careful out there.

I had to be at instructor school with the bike. In the morning, wind wasn't too bad; about force 5 or 6. Over the morning, the wind picked up to about 8. In the afternoon, when we had to practice teaching, we could barely hear each other and papers were flying everywhere. By the time we had to go home, winds had picked up to about 10 and i had to face it head-on, most of the way. My head got trashed around, as i was riding a standard, but i could hold my course, because i was riding more or less straight into the wind. Then came the part where i had the wind from the side. I had to lean into the wind, to remain in a more or less straight line. Gusts of wind tried to knock me off course, so i positioned myself to the far left of my lane. Some of the gusts pushed me from the center of the road, almost into the soft shoulder. A couple time i thought i wasn't gonna make it, but then the wind let up a bit. Never would be to soon to experience that again.

If it’s a constant wind then I agree with correcting lean angle for it (I mean how else would you go straight). But in gusty/turbulent wind, I do the same thing as in an airplane: don’t fight it, just accept that you’ll be pushed around a little, and gradually re-center in the lane if you’re pushed away. Sudden movements and chasing unpredictable air can land you in a worse situation and make you lose focus on your surroundings.
@MotoJitsu
@MotoJitsu 4 года назад
That's what I said lol
@aisu8481
@aisu8481 4 года назад
MotoJitsu® yeah, you did touch on the latter. But specifically when you said to correct for the wind, I thought it could use clarification between two different situations. People will naturally try to micromanage what they shouldn’t, and then get stressed over it. Can’t say ‘your controls’ when that happens on a bike.

When windy: - be one with motorcycle like centauri by squeezig your knees to the tank - don't squeeze your arms; I did this the first few times and it was a bad idea; went back with my tail between the legs...... - squeeze your abs a little bit and lean also a little bit toward, but don't lock your self At my surprise, the motorcycle is keeping straight. It is the upper body which make you "out of balance".

I do not understand the advice. If the speed is the same but the gear is lower, the only gyroscopic effect that is increased is the camshaft’s one. There is no change for the wheels... Is it really possible to feel the difference? But OK, I’ll shut up and go practice (to check this theory...) 😝
@davidmeadows4272
@davidmeadows4272 4 года назад
Jean the engine reciprocating faster will help keep the bike upright, agreed it might only be marginal, also running in a lower gear you are sending power to the rear wheel driving the bike forward against the side force of the wind. It all helps so give it a try.
@fabianmckenna8197
@fabianmckenna8197 4 года назад
I suppose if you're in a lower gear then the bike will respond quicker to any throttle input pushing hard through the wind rather than coasting along in a high gear. Just think how it feels if you hit a false neutral where the bike has no power. It's terrible!

Funny, I do almost do the exact opposite. I live in the Netherlands and it can be very windy here, especially close to the shore. This weekend I rode 500km (310miles) in quite a hard and gusty wind and I kept my whole body loose and relaxed. No excessive squeezing of the legs, upper body very loose and when crossing a bridge I sometimes stick my windward knee out (like others have said) to counter the really gusty wind. Hard wind from the left, bike wants to be pushed to the right. Stick windward knee out which gives resistance and causes the bike to go left into the wind again. Didn't do this much, mostly just sat like a bag of potatoes on the bike, that thing will go straight forward anyways. Just let the bodyparts flop around. Holding tight to the bike wil translate every windgust directly into the bike going somewhere you don't want it to go.

Then there was the time that I was on the highway taking a big right hand swinger in the left lane at 70 mph (because I always obey the speed limit). I ended up on the outside of the curve because I misjudged the entry. The a big gust pushed me even farther out, to what felt like a foot from the Charlie bars. Yikes! I learned a big lesson about leaving a margin for the wind to push you around.

you've made me gain a lot of confidence in my riding style, cornering and (trail) braking but somehow when it starts to rain I freeze, afraid to slip. it would be much appreciated if you can give some tips in a rain situation, trail braking? lean angle, throttle ... I hope you've read that and want to do that. lot's off love from belgium

I had one crazy windy ride a few months ago. Definitely took advantage of the reaction cushion working to stay center lane. At some points i was having to lean towards the shoulder just to keep the bike straight and centered in the lane.

Would you know whether any advice is given on this as part of training or, is it an instinctive thing to do?

This is something that is rarely taught when gettimg a bike licence and when you first experience strong side winds, it's easy to panic and overcorrect. Happened to me and nearly had to go buy some new underwear.

I was hit with a cross wind coming from the right and I was so nervous the bike felt unstable. I guess leaning towards the wind direction help also sticking your knee in the direction of the wind help reduce the drag

Was battling some wind this weekend and it's pretty scary. I got super tucked in to not have the wind blowing on my body and drag the bike around too. I think that also helped. Thanks!

I have been riding a CBF125 since November, just got home from my first time on the highway, it was somewhat windy. 80km/h and I could really feel the wind and the bike unstable. Any tips? Is it better on a heavier bike?

I had a gust that was probably >45 mph.. I'm guessing, but that day there were steady 20mph winds, and this was a very strong gust. I thought the bike was going to get pulled out from under me. How do I deal with that?

Also don't hold onto the grips. Let the bike balance itself with its momentum.

Went through the course and got my endorsement , thay were awesome and spent as much time as I needed to learn how to ride . But nothing was said about the friggin wind . My first time out on the open road the wind blowing me around terrified me, and it still dose . It feels like it gets treated like a secret honestly.

When I first started riding, wind was the invisible death. It could strike at any time without warning. Eventually I got use to what it actually could do, and now it's not a huge deal.

Just happened to me on my way home from work. I saw that gust of wind coming too, soo much dirt got kicked up😂. I was going 70mph and BOOM!! Sent me from the far right of the lane to the far left of the lane. I panicked and lifted throttle and let my legs dangle... dumbass move in. Anyways. I will use this tip😂❤ ty

I'll try it when hit highway. So, yesterday l ride in open highway which on side has no building or tree to block the wind. I feel like a leaf being pushed here and there, since my bike is so light. l did what you said, it works. Maybe slow down also help.

I dealt with this today and God damn it was throwing me around. All I could do was lean into the wind. I pulled over to let cars pass me on the side of the road and almost got blown over sitting there parked

Also, I've realized that bending forward you are cutting the wind even when it hits you by the sides, less resistance though.

Also do not grab the bars too tight…As you would be transferring the wind that is hitting your body into the bike.

Lol highway 70 mph with constant side winds at 40 mph +wind gusts is ass clenching euphoria.... I made my self do it for hours and I was a new rider... Stay in the middle and don't freak when you slide two feet just head back to the middle confident and scared... Riding 55 and 60mph felt way safer.... And rocks and sand like litte 4/10 shotguns blasting you at underpasses... I wear track approved attire every time I ride... I feel like naked without it... I wear full leathers in stop and go traffic... Its not bad...
