Good tutorial. I'd add set the plunge router before assembling the jig for both depths and use a ton of glue and screws on the buck stud or the drywall may crack. You all can second guess the order he works in but this is the most efficient. Nail holes will re-secure the jig exactly. JP avoided the uneven hinge placement topic Soss recommends which would have filled the comments with panic and arguments like happens on about every job I install these on. Notice the middle hinge is not centered at 1.5 minutes. Now you all can second guess that too. Final word, he did this exactly right. Go try some yourself, then comment.

Having both a separate Plunge base and Fixed base Router set up you don’t have to keep moving the Template from door to jamb then back to the door...Anyone who is challenged enough to use these hinges had better be prepared tools wise... I seed these hinges on two 3-0 x 7-0 solid core doors as Racket ball court entry doors to the court keeping a smooth face for balls not to engage with... I done this countless times... Big 4 5/8" Soss hinges are about $30, 3 3/4" are about $18. Both from Zoro Tool.

@@hypnolobster a normal room door uses which size of if those hinges? And the front and back door of the house uses which size? Does it depend on the size of the door and width of the wood to determine which hinge to be used?

I used OTLAV 3D hinges, made in Italy. Excellent quality, very well built, 3 way adjustable. You can find them online.

Hmmm, Wouldn't it make more sense to route the mortises on the buck stud before it is attached to the framing? Then you could just do it on a bench at a much more comfortable working height.

Curious as to the reasoning behind moving the jig form door to jam and then back to door. Why not cut the shallow and deep mortise without moving the jig. Seems like an opportunity to get holes misaligned.

What type of door are you using? Do you recommend a manufacturer? Also for your jam do you have a preferred Material\manufacturer? When you prepared the framing for the door did you give yourself a tolerance for the door? Or did you measure the opening the exact measurement of the door

If so do you have a video of how to build those type of door jambs? And if not can you make one or send me some tips on how to do this? Great video. I've been doing doors strictly since 1997. These hinges are great for interior use. Exterior use would seem difficult to weatherstrip with compression copper weatherstrip. I guess you could use pop in Q-Lon, cheap weatherstrip but that would be like building the BMW but opted for hub caps instead of real rims. I have used this Hong on jewelry boxes also. Smaller of course.

Hi Roger, what would you suggest for outdoor use? I need to rehang a bungalow door to open to the outside because the floor has shifted & the threshold now has an uneven gap. As a result the door doesn't fully open to the inside anymore. Having a hard time finding hinges that aren't a security concern.

Do the Soss hinges say which side goes in the frame and which side goes in the door? as I noticed at 5:11that you fitted them so the door was swinging from the underside of the hinge as opposed to sitting on top which I would of thought was a stronger way of fitting them. Hope that makes sense.

If you are using only one jig, do you still flip it over so that the sticker is resting against the jamb? Didn’t see that in the paper instructions that came with the jig.

what if my jamb isn't deep enough. I dont have the buck stud it's just sheetrock over where the door frame used to be. Is there a way to achieve this look with an existing door that was traditionally installed?

Does the lock side of the door edge need the same bevel as when using regular door hinges, and is the hinge side reveal the same as regular door hinges, or is it tighter?

Very smart video. Very sensicle process. Easy to understand. Doing mock ups and trial runs is a good investment of your time. Good light and sound. The Soss jig is somewhat underwhelming and I have to wonder just how long those screw hole will hold up.

why this is called an invisible hinge? because you still can see the hinge like normal hinges when you open the door, and if its mean closed door, the normal hinge is also cannot be seen

I made a door by laminating 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood for a small entry to a basement but, on their website calculator 1 1/2 inch door thickness is not an option. Does this mean I am not able to use these on this door at its current thickness?

Hey great job there. But I used same bushing from porter cable recommended by soss and using a Bosch router the bushing doesn’t reach the screws for the deeper cut, any suggestion? Thanks

Thanks, Jon I enjoyed the video on use of Soss hinges for a door. My project is a wet bar hardwood countertop that needs a fold-down (or maybe fold-up) section across an opening. Soss hinges seem applicable for that case. Any suggestions?

I prefer to do this with a plunge mortising kit and a drill. Safer, faster, more controlled.

I do not understand the series of cutting the mortises. If I was doing it I would cut the shallow mortise and then put the spacer pins in and finish one set of hinges before moving on the do the door jam, I know it means moving the pins more but they are not difficult to take out or put in and doing it this way reduces the time needed to reposition the jig.

that means adjusting the depth of the router bit for the critical depth of the shallow mortise twice, so this is the easiest way possible

ahh - I had the same question, didn't think of that. I suppose then if one had two routers both mortises could be routed with one set-up.

That plunge router has 3 plunge settings. If you set the 2 depths before hand it will save you time. You don't need 2 routers. The default about sos hinges is that they have no adjustment. I started using the Tectus hinges and I will never go back. They have up and down, in and out adjustment. I like the video 👌🏽

Nice vid! I've used these before and they are sweet....but they're expensive! Had a 4-0/7-0 door that was to be hidden with a mural covering the wall and door and I couldn't have hinges sticking out on the mural side. This was the best product for that install when used with 3 hinges and 1 closer hinge.

Jon - question. I'm transferring some new cabinet doors for some old ones that have soss 204's. But the wooden Soss 204 template hangs out over each edge of the cabinet door because the existing Soss hinge mortises are both positioned close to the top and bottom edges. Given I have six doors to do, whats the best way to transfer the hinge mortise locations from the old doors to the new doors so they are exact? I've marked the limits and centers of the existing Soss mortises on the old doors with the new doors as well as the center of the wooden Soss template plate, lined up the template and existing mortise center lines, and marked where the template hits the end of the door wih the centers lined up. Is that the best way to do as I'm worried about slight variations in the pencil lines causing one mortise to slightly off from the other?!

Nice.....but I would mortise the hinge side jamb before installing it in the rough opening and to the head and other side jambs. Then you can attach the head and strike jambs on the saw horses. In that case, you are making a pre-hung door which is easier to achieve the proper head jamb length and spacing around the head and strike jambs.

i bought the little silver template guide thing that you have but the router i am using doesn't have that same black plastic plate that the bottom of your router has. Mine is like a big 3 inch opening. So that silver template guide has nowhere to attach to. Can i buy that black piece for my router because the guide is useless then.

Get a Rockler guide bushing plate or similar. Great addition to any router kit.

question. with that style hinge, do you still have the same amount of swing degree on the door or is it more limited than a standard hinge? I didn't see the door open more than maybe 75 or 80 degrees, just curious if that's as far open as it allows.

The hinges allow the door to open a full 180 degrees. However, if you install trim molding around the door, you will have in issue with the door hitting the molding and stopping it short of opening a full 180 degrees.
