I just can’t thank you enough for addressing the tv like it’s a real thing, instead of pretending it’s just a maybe for real homes. We like our tv! Everybody we know does! We can’t make it disappear, so how about we do the RIGHT thing with it?!? And you don’t pretend it’s possible in every situation to put it somewhere other than over the fireplace. Sometimes, it’s just the best place! Love it. Love your channel!

Hey Drew, fun to hear from you. I have enjoyed watching your journey here on RU-vid as well. I’m so impressed with your design skills and love how your home is coming together. Every video has an element of surprise and the finished product is always so beautiful. You remind me of myself at your age… not afraid to try something new, determined to find treasures… even on the street 😂 and able to pull off magic (as it were) in everything you touch. Wishing you continued success in your life and in the homes you touch. I’ll bet your mom is really proud of you Drew. I know I am 👍🏻 RR

I like problem solving sessions. I feel like these situations are similar to mine and I definitely learned from some mistakes. I definitely love your high ends make over houses, but I feel like I don’t have that huge space nor the money to purchase the items in the house. So it’s nothing personal. I appreciate your efforts to make your channel more practical! Love it❤❤❤

I'm really happy to see this important topic! My son is legally blind and has to sit about 6' from the TV. That being said, we have FOR YEARS had out TV mounted so when he is sitting on his favorite bar chair stool right next to the TV it's at his height (he's about 5'5") I was so happy so see that I passed your test! I have a large mossy green TV cabinet with 4 glass doors, and a just slightly smaller TV mounted above the wall above it. My husband has wanted a larger TV and I have always said no! it would be too big for the cabinet underneath! LOL (I cannot believe people cram their necks to look up for hours! Chiropractor time!!!!!)

Back in the 90s the cabinet housing the TV was a godsend. I could shut away the ugly black box. The Samsung frame TVs are a modern approach, but sadly my husband wanted the bigger and technologically better TV. Personally I hate it, but what can you do? It’s all about compromise and I get my way with all the decorating decisions. So thanks for addressing this issue.

One of the greatest design tragedies was the advent of the wall-mounted television. Particularly the extended arm thing. If you must have a TV the size of a Mini Cooper, please follow Rebecca’s suggestions.

Lol ... my husband and I fuss over TV size and placement. As you said, his motto is the GRANDER the better and he loves having the TV as the focal point. I prefer a much smaller TV and hidden so something more decorative is the focal point. Our compromise is TV hung over a large hutch and are planning to frame the TV so it looks like a piece of art. I run music with beautiful lanscape/wildlife scenes (Tim Janis has a great collection!). Even when I turn the music down the imagery is beautiful, refreshing and seasonal! 😊

Love your Top 10 series! As a single gal, I´m a big fan of large TVs when the space allows it especially in the bedroom and kudos on your TV, it looks sooo much larger than a 65 " sitting above your crendenza. I read that the recommend height is about 42-45 inches from floor to the center of TV so its eye-level but I will see if its true.

Hi Rebecca - I found your channel through @lonefox :-) and am just getting started with your content! Love this series so far since it is totally relatable, looking at “real” homes! And this topic (tv placement) is rarely discussed and so necessary - thanks! I (60 F) am actually the video nut in the family - my husband could care less what kind or size tv we have LOL. However, I HATE to see my tv when we’re not using it and have mostly been able to keep them behind closed doors; we modified our old CRT entertainment center with a swing arm to accommodate a 40” LCD stored at a diagonal that we pulled out to watch but unfortunately we just lost that piece of furniture to a total house flood a year ago and now we can’t find anything like that which fits in our space, accommodates a larger tv, AND has doors that close, so we are going with a Frame TV (which I think you also have) with a nice large console below - it’s a compromise. Your guidelines were very helpful as we transition to a new way of setting up our tv.

BETH: What a cozy bedroom with a dramatic ceiling and great natural light. There is a lot going on and the space could feel more restful if all the visual elements were simplified. I like that the TV is up high because people are naturally looking more up when they're laying in bed. I agree with filling in the wall so that the TV can be centered. The stepped cutout is also distracting to the main features of TV and fireplace. Fewer angles and distractions will make the wall less cluttered and more peaceful. Relocating the leopard and bedside table would add to the peacefulness. I like the leopard , but it is a strong statement that deserves placement that allows it to be the focal point. Is that tile around the fireplace? Changing the tile and wall paint color to a richer , darker color would reduce the contrast between the black features and the background . I think Rebecca mentions this approach for one of the living room pictures, and I think it would be even more calming in a bedroom. ANN: Such a beautiful room! Love the colors. I love Rebecca's suggestions and I would take the art wall a little further and group most of your art together on that feature wall. As shown, the pictures feel a little scattered and when guests are seated, two of the lamps are blocking two of the pictures. Remember to hang pictures at the eye level for a seated person in rooms where people are mostly seated. In the entry, people will stand and art can be hung higher. Keep in mind that the furniture under the art is part of the group. The bedside table looks lonely by itself. It might look better grouped with a chair or anchor it to the wall next to your coat closet and lower the picture so those two items are a group. A bowl on top we could make a good key catcher. Or, put an ottoman on that wall and remove the very large shoe-changing bench. Well done.

Oh definitely him on the TV selection….we compromised at 65” which is still huge in our living room. 55”:would have sufficed. Worst was that he had to have an OLED after seeing it at BBuy. Bye bye to the Frame by Samsung I wanted….wasn’t a good enough picture quality 🙄 We did get it centered but I don’t like seeing a big tv floating on the lighter color wall. We’re thinking (hubs is a master carpenter) of a feature wall, still need to design it and painting out the wall a deeper tone.

This is all good advice but keep in mind, that ergonomics are also important, meaning that the TV should always be hung at a height and/or angle that is comfortable to view from when you will be seating down without straining your neck or your vision. Bad positions can cause strain on the eyesight and neck, head and back pain.

One of the biggest issues with TVs on walls is also not showing enough of the wall between the TV and the console. For example why is there a clock stacked on your soundbar creating not only clutter but a pet peeve of any “techie” putting “things” on electronics. Also when it comes to consoles being smaller than TV’a they’re under. The issue is that TV is either a 75in or 85in and that console is 60inches wide most likely. With that being said that would be a little big in regard to furniture to make it look aesthetically pleasing for a TV in the room setup that person has. Not to mention it becomes harder to find the correct style of furniture as you get bigger and bigger with. You can’t buy a new piece of furniture every time you upgrade the set. To me once you hit the 75in and up TV size the furniture that goes under it as long as it’s not super small it’s fine. Realistically the height of the furniture can be more important than the width.

For me the biggest mistake people make is having the TV too high. According to TV installers the general rule of thumb is to have it so that, when the intended audience is seated, the center of the mounted TV is as high as eye level. That means that unless one has a linear fireplace mounting over a mantle will always put the TV too high causing neck and eye strain.

Lots of great ideas. One thing that I don’t like is when a couch or couches are placed perpendicular to the tv. If you have a bad neck, good luck twisting it to one side to watch a movie. Do you know of any movie theaters that do that? No. If you don’t have a bad neck, you’ll get one if you watch ty on sitting on a couch like that. Ok. So, you can place a chair opposite a tv, but I think it looks weird to places couches perpendicular to a tv, especially if you have other people over to watch a movie. The example of the tv very high on the brick wall and the couch facing the opposite way is a perfect example of a tv in the wrong place. Nothing was said about this on the program. There are health considerations. Don’t twist your neck, sit a certain eye distance away from your tv so it’s not a strain on your eyes.

Good for you and your husband. You are not alone. Hopefully I was able to add some valuable ideas and ways you can incorporate a very large TV without sacrificing the overall beauty of your room :-) RR

With Ghazala, I would go a step further and just paint the entire fireplace black!

For me TV's are always too small. I have been thinking of getting one of those projectors, but i know too little about them to decide. I think if you own something you should be able to use it. Small TV's are too small. People don't visit each other where i live. The thing to do is watch tv. Sorry to say, tv is a must in one person household.

I think it was designers that first suggested tvs over mantle. I think that is the worst idea ever. Tvs should be eye level just like a picture on the wall for viewing. There's is one exception I've found and it's a TV that has a hanger that moves the tv down and at angle . Cricks in the neck from watching TV is not a good idea.

If the room is large enough, the angle might not be an issue. Most of the example here (over the fireplace) look fairly comfortable.
