I am really trying to shift my focus a little bit to provide more educational examples of how to do certain things with harvesting your worms, feeding methods and addressing common worm composting questions.
THE HORIZONTAL MIGRATION METHOD
I have tried the horizontal migration method before but frequently I get impatient and give up before I give it a true "start to finish" try. Lilia Kogan does a fantastic job with the horizontal migration and inspired me to see it through. It very well may be the best way to harvest nearly worm-free castings.
Today I pulled out my "secret" red wiggler bin that is fully established and ready for harvest. When you get to this point in your worm bin, people often are uncertain of how to get the castings without having to pick out worms. This method is a great way to go about it. Make sure you are ready to commit a little extra time to harvest but it sure does pay off.

MY DRY MIX
I use a dry mix of Diatomaceous Earth, Neem Cake, Kelp Meal and Oyster Shell. This combination is a great way to provide not only a grit source for the worms to properly digest their food, but also to provide a pH buffer to keep a healthy bin while also giving a pest control ingredient (Neem cake) that will make the process of handling worm bin pests just a little easier.
Dry Mix Ingredients:
1. Neem cake: amzn.to/2QtPALv (excellent for bug control)
2. Diatomaceous Earth: amzn.to/2EaFFVd (grit source and trace minerals- can also be good for bug control if kept dry)
3. Kelp meal: amzn.to/2EaviAQ (trace minerals)

Thanks for the shout out. Very nice castings and great info for anyone starting out. You're right about being patient. It took me 5 weeks to get the majority of the worms to migrate. Looking forward to see some worm balls.

Since I've started using the bubble wrap on top of my bins, I've noticed that it's a great visual indicator quickly showing you where the bed is too moist. It also shows exactly where there are any hot spots after a feeding. IF I pay attention, I can see any potential problems even BEFORE they become a problem!!! It's easy to see any additional moisture or steam & exactly where it's coming from!!! Now that I can see which foods are crreatig hot spots, I know to be more careful when feeding. I can also see when to add some cardboard BEFORE the worms start a mass exodus!!!

I tried to raise ANC (coz red wigglers are impossible to find here in the Philippines) and I failed 2 and a half times. I say half because out of a kilo of ANC only about 15-25 worms stayed/didn't die. Thankfully they are slowly reproducing now. I will try raising a new batch applying what I have learned from your videos. I have watched at least a hundred videos in raising compost worms but you showed me a new way of doing things certain things. I hope a lot more people get to watch your videos.

Thanks for the effort you put into the video! I have been watching and reading material because i want to start vermicomposting. An unnatural alternative ive seen is the use of sieves to separate worms from cast, my worry which wasnt addressed was the effect such as stress on yhe worms but it seeks to be a quicker way to harvest cast.

Very interesting. I learn more with each video that I watch. I have 2 bins now-a worm tower outside and a 10 gallon plastic bin in my garage. Both are doing ok but not a lot of growth that I can see and I just bought an Urban worm bag so am headed over to watch your videos on that. Can you please tell me the amount of each ingredient in your dry mix. Thank you :)

Do you have a video of when you took out your compost? Looking through your videos now. I have 2 bins that were left for 1.5 months (went on holiday) and when I got back they were so compacted. I wish I had seen this bc it took me 5 days to do the pile and light method. Curious if you sacrifice some worms when you do this method or if you pick through the compost anyway. I have such a hard time when I see cocoons or baby worms that I cannot get out. Ibend up keeping a decent amount of the compost just because I don't want to loose worms. Love watching your videos!

I noticed u don't have a bottom tray for draining. I had a system with a bottom tray for draining but I never used it and the worms escaped into it. The reason is if you freeze everything you feed them, the excess water drains off anyway. You just dump it out before feeding it into the bin. I used to volunteer at worm-building workshops and at first, we built a bottom bin with draining nozzle. But towards the end, our supervisor said we weren't building them that way anymore. There was just never enough to pour out. When you freeze the cells of the plant burst and that releases the water. And we taught everyone to freeze everything.

Awesome ❤️. I'm currently 'neglecting' a 6 month old tote for a few weeks to give the worms time to finish off bedding and any residual food, and leaving it uncovered for the castings to dry slightly too, before making my first ever horizontal migration attempt with it, so it will be great to follow this as I'll be a few weeks behind yours. Which already has me thinking, if a month on you still need to hurry them up, maybe using the bubble wrap on the feeding side only would give them an extra kick up the bum? I think given enough time and tempting food this will be very successful anyway.

another great video! I have two bins of worms. one is red wigglers and the other is my original earth worms. I'm upgrading to a bath tub vermicompost bin. can I combine the red wigglers and earth worms in my new bin? if not, then I'm thinking I might just release the earth worms in to my garden and concentrate on the red wigglers. ty

I just add a second box on top. It has holes in the bottom and I only feed in the upper box so they migrate up😊

Because it's hard to find neem powder in my location, is it good if is not "neem CAKE?" but neem powder? for now i put a rag so it's hard for fruit fly to put there eggs!

Hi. Thanks for the information. I am new to worm bins, and live in Venezuela. I have to work with what I have. I was wondering two things. I see you have no holes on the bottom and the worms look like they are doing fine even though it's not as wet as others I've seen. So keeping them without a lid or a lid with holes would be good, and drainage is not necessary? Second is what is neem cake?

Hi, I’m from Belgium and completely New to composting with worms. Do you think this will work for our dog poo, mixer with kitchen leftovers? Thank you for the advise!

No...never use dog poo...unless perhaps you do it outside in a trench where you will never plant edibles unless perhaps a tree at sometime in the future. I used to cut the bottom off a garbage can ( so it was 8") and leave the cover on...dug a hole about 2' deep and used it to put dog poo wrapped in newspaper. I layered about 4" of grass clippings about every week. There were compost worms added..when piled above soil line i covered it with leaves and grass clippings..a year or two later a tree or large shrub was planted next to this ..i also had a 2 acre lot so there was lots of room....ps....dog poo= possible pathogens.

@@TheCrazyWormLady seems to be several species in their but the description said just plainly red wigglers i ordered a cocoon pack off of timothy campbell of eisenia andrei and also since got 400 ancs but the plain red wigglers are my least favorite so far im hoping the eisenia andrei do better

peat is more sustainable then coco.... the water to wash the salts away its a crazy amount

I beg to differ. Peat moss takes centuries to get to harvesting point and cannot be “grown” commercially. Coco coir takes a decade or so, and the palms can be grown on a commercial scale.
