Hi, how do you store them for long time? If you don’t mind explaining it in detail. Just throw the mint cut in the water as you showed in your video. Does it stay longer in the fridge? Thanks in advance.

One of my favorite new ideas for summer mint: grilled eggplant panzanella with mint...it is just so good and can be eaten as a side or as a main dish! When we bought our house, it was the first time in my adult life that I had a backyard after living in city apartments for several years. The one thing growing in the veggie bed (which was not in the best location) was mint. I had not watered it or anything, and this was before I was interested in gardening. The rain came and it just popped up everywhere, and when I smelled it was mint, that's what first got me thinking that I could actually grow things that I could eat in my backyard! That is what prompted me to by my very first tomato, zucchini, and pepper plants. I have rescued that mint and contained in a pot as a remnant/memory of the house as well as my first exposure to gardening!

What a great story, Marie! I love it! You never know where you'll find inspiration. I'll have to look up a recipe for eggplant panzanella - sounds amazing, as I'll have eggplant soon. Enjoy your mint!

I have 5 varieties of mint in my container garden. I have mint tea almost every morning since it grows so quick. Mt favorite is the chocolate mint. After washing the leaves I stick them in water, put them in the fridge over night to steep and have ice mint tea or hot tea in the morning. If you want more flavor from each leave just break them up and strain them when pouring. I’ve even added more water to the leaves and gotten a second cup of tea (it’s not a strong but still has a nice refreshing flavor)

Besides using mint fresh, on these hot days I dry and preserve the extra on screens in the shade. You can also hang it upside down in bunches and remove leaves from stems after drying. Once dried I mix with other things dried like chamomile, rose hips, lemongrass, and roselle hybiscus and orange peel for a super tasty tea thats served hot or cold all year. I'm lucky to be able to grow all but the chamomile which I purchase bulk in the spice section of our local mkt that carries a variety of ethnic specialty spices and herbs. Mix your own. Save money.🍃

My mint grows wild in an area of my "yard". I live off grid, country/forest so, there's enough room for everyone... 😉 I harvest the mint and other herbs/leaves/berries etc. throughout the summer fall. During the summer months, I'll make chilled drinks to sip on while working the homestead and gardens. I also dehydrate much of my various herbs, leaves and berries to use throughout the cold winter months in hot tea's as well as using a few of them in my homemade natural bath and body products. My favorite tea is a mix between mint, lemon balm and raspberry.

Great video, I like the garden tour. I love mint tea. I drink it hot made fresh every night after dinner. I use fresh mint from May- September and then make it with dried mint the rest of the year because it will be under the snow all winter. If I have any leftover tea I drink it over ice. I dry my mint by hanging it up outside on my covered porch in the shade.

Many years ago I read that mint kept away the Vine borers from squash plants. I planted it among the squash plants. It didn't keep the vine borer away, but it took me awhile to get rid of the tunneling roots. Oregano is invasive also. Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us Kim.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

We make mint tea. And sometimes we added to regular tea just to give it a little boost of flavor. At the beginning of Summer my dad dropped me and my sister off at maw-maws house to do some yard work and to clean out her garden. And we found that her mint was going crazy all over the place. She and I picked them in and we made two cases of half pint jelly jars of mint jelly. She let us keep a couple hars to bring back home. And she sold the rest of them at the local farmers market. I like to have them in a fruit salad also. I made the mistake of putting two mint plants at the very end of one of my raised garden beds. And well basically it's trying to take over the entire bed. Oh and I almost forgot. Maw-maw also makes mint extract.

Spearmint Recipe - soup : I learned from my mom and grandmother to make a delicious soup made with spearmint. (To be eaten warmed up or hot never cold.) Boil water in a soup pot, add salt to desired/preferred taste, add spearmint not peppermint or others (lots of sprigs like for 4 cups water 4 sprigs), and add butter (unsalted if already salted water) a tablespoon for 4 cups water. Let all come to a good boil and remove from heat. Now, add EGGS (without shells) into the pot and DO NOT STIR WATER ! JUST COVER the pot and let eggs poach. In about a minute or two you can put the pot back on the element that should still have some heat from having boiled the broth, and DO NOT TURN ON HEAT. The eggs will cook with that residual heat. In 15 minutes or until egg is cooked/poached to liking, taste to be sure saltiness is to liking (adjust if need be) and serve in a bowl and cut the poached egg which will make the broth become slightly creamy from the egg yolk. Optional to eat the spearmint leaves that have cooked, softened and reduced it’s pungent minty taste. Can add some water-crackers or saltine crackers or chia/flax seed crackers..etc.. into broth or just eat it as a protein soup without crackers. Can also add raw watercress or raw spinach to the hot broth in the soup bowl and YUM !!! YUM! YUM! EVEN BETTER THE NEXT FEW DAYS !!!!

Bruising the mint leaves certainly does release more oils. I keep a 4 inch section of half inch dowel in my stuff drawer. I have a wood shop so I have lots of dowel pieces. I use the short dowel as a miniature rolling pin. Roll the leaves between the dowel and your cutting board a few times and you have a wonderful release of fragrance.

Thanks for this timely video Kim! After binge watching all your container series videos a couple weeks ago, I was motivated to start my container garden on July 2nd. Mint was the first thing I planted. I started with a small pot though. Should I transfer the seeds to one of my 5 gallon smart pots before they begin to bloom? There were so many tiny little seeds in the bag. Rather than try to place one or two in the pot, I used the entire bag. Seeing how yours are blooming and taking over the pot, I probably shouldn't have done that huh? In addition to enjoying the mint in beverages, I plan to dehydrate the mint, place them in a jar with olive oil or jojoba oil and use it to massage my scalp. I'll also boil the mint and use the water as a hair rinse. Peppermint is great for the hair and scalp. BTW, your hair looks amazing!!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 года назад
Hi Dionne - at this point, I wouldn't try to transplant to a 5 gallon until your mint is 3-4 inches tall, you could damage a tiny seedling by moving it too soon. Mint is so hardy, it should have no problem being moved when it's a little bigger. Have patience, though, mint seeds can take a few weeks to germinate. Happy mint growing!

I like to dice up the leaves and put it in with the coffe grounds when making coffee. I was thinking about other uses and wondered if the stem is flavorful and edible. Never know with plants since they naturally make toxins.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 5 месяцев назад
Yes, indeed! Mint stems can totally bring some zing to your dishes. They're edible and pack a punch of flavor, especially in teas or infusions. Just pluck the leaves off if you're not into the stem's texture, but don't toss them away! They're like little flavor sticks waiting to jazz up your culinary creations. Have and let me know what you try with them! CK

I make mint syrup. Just make a simple syrup, and get it up to a good boil so that all the sugar is dissolved. Let cool a little, then throw in a bunch of mint and let it steep. Strain and bottle. Keeps for months. I put it in cold brew green tea, with some lime juice. I put a lot of mint in because I don't like really sweet drinks.

Hello Kim! 🤗🖐 Enjoyed this great video, recipe, and tips for mint!👏 Yes, mint is very, very invasive! I had a large pot several years ago and did not realize it had broken; mint covers my entire herb garden with poison ivy mixed in it! I was able to obtain some mint with no poison ivy near it and place in another pot. Will have to dig up the entire herb garden, with a tractor, and toss everything due to the poison ivy! I love to put mint in a glass of water with lemons, mixed in with watermelon pieces & its juice, in herbal teas (hot & cold), in hot chocolate, and dry the leaves for later use ie: winter. Stay blessed and safe! 🦋7/8/2021🦋

I have 2 different mints growing. I'm glad I did the right thing and cut them to the base because they were looking twiggy! Question: type of fertilizer? General granular? Something with high nitrogen? Love your videos! Found you last year with your watermelon in containers. Hooked ever since!!! 😁

@CaliKim29

Hi Shirley - glad you're growing mint and enjoying it. Great job - pruning waaaaay back as I showed on the mint in the red containers is the thing to do with woody stems. You'll be surprised at how much that stimulates new growth - your mint will look fantastic again in a very short time! I fertilize my mint the same method I do everything else in my garden, Vermisterra worm tea every few weeks, high nitrogen fertilizer (Good Dirt Plant Food) when first planted or after heavy pruning. You can really use any organic fertilizer, mint is not picky at all, and can take just about any conditions, including neglect and drying out. Thanks for stopping by!

@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 года назад
Hi Danielle - you'll love growing mint, it's so easy. Pop in under some grow lights in your basement and it should do just fine! Once it's well established, take a few cuttings, pop in water, place it out of direct sunlight, and it will grow roots from the stem, which you can then plant in soil. This way you have a backup if something happens to your plants. Here's a video with more details: bit.ly/CaliKimRootingPruningMint. You'll also want to watch my Herbs playlist: bit.ly/CaliKimHerbsGrowingAndUsingPlaylist. Thanks for watching! Hi Cali, I am from India and we do use a lot of mint. I havent been very lucky with growing it though. Last time, it grew and filled the pot with a lovely aroma, but the next day it had died, the entire batch had black leaves and died out. I hadnt done anything special so was quite taken aback. Was it because i fertilized with liquid fertilizer without harvesting?
@marilyndetrow1005
@marilyndetrow1005 2 года назад
Yes, too much of any fertilizer can kill a plant. If you purchased a bag of potting soil, it may have a slow release fertilizer in it already so it wouldn't need more. I've never seen this happen overnight, though. Could someone have poured hot water on it or torched it?
@christiethomas6905
@christiethomas6905 2 года назад
This is great thank you! I will try the cucumber salad too! I find my grow pots dry out too quickly, in the peak of summer I may even water twice a day do you have any tips?
@marilyndetrow1005
@marilyndetrow1005 2 года назад
Try adding a few inches of mulch or pine straw to the top of your pots, if you haven't already; it makes a big difference in keeping them moist. Also shading them with a taller potted plant may help, if the leaves are browning...or just moving them to a light shade should lighten up the watering chore. Clay pots hold moisture best and insulates against the heat better than any other pot. Plastic pots allow the soil to heat up more. Drip irrigation is easy to set up with a hose if you have a faucet nearby. And there are timers that can automatically water your plants for you!
