Whether you are growing snow peas, snap peas, or shelling peas (and I explain the differences in this video), you'll want to know when is the optimal time to harvest them. From eating fresh snap peas, harvesting shelling peas or saving seeds for the next crop, this video walks you through what you need to know about peas.
For more information on growing peas, check out my podcast episode, "Growing Peas for the Beginner," at the Beginner's Garden Podcast here:

I'm so glad I caught this video when I did. This is my first year planting peas, and I was so confused at how to handle them all. This video should have a million views, but I'm not surprised to only see 5 comments - you did a wonderful job explaining each type! Thank you!!!

What a great video! I planted sugar snap and shell but forgot which was which ! So a sugar snap can be let go to shell But if I pick a shell pea as a pod will it taste bad ? Waxy? Thank you so much

I am so glad your video popped up and Thank you!!! you are so right the most simplest questions are the hardest to find answers to. my growing seasoning is so short I get confused on different vegetables and this one video covered it all on different peas to picking right stages to even showing what to look for if one wants to save seeds for next year. GREAT JOB!!!

Great instructions on peas. Not sure where you are located but we are in zone 5 southern New Hampshire. I start planting my peas the first day of spring. Have had to shovel snow many times in past. I can see you too have a real love for peas.

Simply Garden I'm in Arkansas zone 7b. I do love peas! They can be challenging in our climate though. I'm going to try a fall crop this season.

I'm also in southern NH. Right about now (first week in August) is a good time to plant peas for a fall crop. They most likely will not germinate as well as they did in the spring, but as long as it isn't too hot and dry you should get a decent harvest before the frost. Same holds true for green beans if you are thinking about doing another crop of those. Good luck to you both!

I planted both snap and pod peas this year for the first time as I have dabbled with a couple of veggies each year for the last 5 or so. This year I made a bigger garden and tried a few new things - the two kinds of peas are two of the 6 new veggies for this year. I guessed this morning that when the little flowers fell off the snap peas I should pick them. Two lost their flowers today and I picked them and my husband and I enjoyed them. I think a whole bunch will be picked this weekend. It might be time for a peapod stir fry, or maybe we'll just eat them. The shelling peas still have their flowers and they still look thin. I guess I'll just have to watch them a bit longer. Thank you for this video, it has helped.

Great video. This lowers my food bill some more. I'm no longer buying lettuce. Soon not buying tomatoes. Now I'm going too start 3 pea plants. Along with 4 baby carrot plants. Eventually one day. only thing I need to buy is eggs and milk...Lloll. Cause for the meat I'll be ....fishing in the ocean...Lloll.

Everything I wanted to know. Thanks! I've been snacking on my snap peas for a few weeks now but they've gone too far. It's good to know I can shell them and let them dry to plant next year. I noticed they were getting a bit tough as they got older.

Great info on peas! I was trying to find out if shelling pea pods can be eaten if they are very young. It seems the string is the biggest problem, but that it's inedible.

Nice video, but I've got to disagree on the snap peas. The fairly plump ones are the best, sweet and definitely edible, pod and all. If you pick your snap peas too early you're really missing out on the party. That one that you held up as being "for seed" for the next year is a dud. Every time I plant sugar snap peas there are always a couple of plants that are from bad seed like that one and are inedible at any stage really. You can tell them apart from the good snap peas because their pods are straight and don't have the curve to them that a good snap pea does. Peace... or peas

Do you have any suggestions for keeping the birds from eating sugar snap peas? I’ve found to let them grow and shell eat the inside. Amazing flavor! Don’t have that many because of the birds eating them. Tried the same with the shelling peas but those were bitter! Lol

Wow thank you so very much -- this is a huge help for my 1st attempt growing peas.. right now, snap peas and California Black eyed peas:) One question, how long do the peas keep of the vine (if you don't shell them), before they must be canned or used? :) thank you again -- love this video!!!!
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden 7 лет назад
Thank you, Debra! I'm glad the video was helpful for you! For green shelling peas, I've kept mine in the refrigerator for a week with no problem. Black-eyed peas (I grow the California Cow Pea) have kept 2-3 weeks in the crisper for me. I prefer to wait to shell them until I'm ready to use them like you said. I've tried it the other way and they tend to spoil quicker if shelled.

Oh fantastic -- this is so exciting. I have become disabled (MS) and a bit housebound - Had to change my lifestyle completely - so my husband built me a raised bed as well as a ground garden. I thought peas in S FL heat would be the best to begin with. Never thought of what to actually do once I had a whole lotta peas:) - I am learning so much and find great purpose in it all... SO, THANKS for teaching the one main area that everyone just seems to skip... little things do mean a lot:)))

When do you know to plant the fall harvest? Thanks for the great video!
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden 3 года назад
You'll need to calculate the days to maturity of the crop + time of harvest (usually 1-2 weeks) + an extra couple of weeks and subtract that from your average first frost date. Shelling peas usually won't work in the fall but snap peas will.
@SimplyGarden
@SimplyGarden 6 лет назад
As far as planting peas in fall when do you usually get your first frost date? Unfortunately I've had a hard time growing peas in the fall. I'd love to see how you do with them.

Hi! I was wondering how long you store your shelling peas before you can or cook them? Do you just put them in the fridge in a baggie? Thanks!

I can mine and I try to can the shelled peas within a few days. In the shell they will last a little longer.

Hi. I have planted a bush pea/ sweet utrillo. With this type of pea, when is the best time to harvest where I can both eat the pods and the shell?
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden 3 года назад
In my experience, I harvest all of the pods at once and if I shell them, I have to wait a couple of weeks for that.
@allenelswick6961

We always let the sugar snap peas get full but not tough. You can always tell when it's the right time to pick peas. No one where i live ever grew peas to shell out. Peas are a cool weather crop and need to be cooked as soon as possible due to their sugar content. We always eat hull and all the cooked peas are so much better cooked with the hull.

Help! I can't remember what peas j planted. How can I tell the difference?
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden 6 лет назад
J. Nikole Hershberger I'm not sure that you can. Pea plants look very similar to one another. When the pods form you should be able to see different characteristics (some longer, etc.) and hopefully narrow them down then.

Any idea how many pea plants to grow to have enough harvest to can?
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden Год назад
I usually do around 250 foot row for enough to can a dozen jars or so. But our climate gets hot fast; in a milder climate I’m sure they would produce more for longer.
