That is the slow motion demonstration part, just to show the sequence of events with not all things happening at once. You are right technically.

I know you know how to do it in a real car, but on the sim rig, you blipped the gas before you depressed the clutch, which would have bad results on the track!

One of the best "how to heel toe" videos I've seen. I have the Cusco pedal cover too, which makes it a lot easier with this car, but I still struggle with it. My blooper video shows me spinning out due to a mismatched downshift (5th to 2nd /facepalm), and I still chirp the back wheels occasionally due to not enough blip. But it feels great when you pull it off. I did a ride-along with an instructor and was amazed at how every downshift was perfectly matched. Goals. One thing I would add is the importance to keep consistent brake pressure during the maneuver or else you will unsettle the car.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 6 лет назад
Thanks man! It is definitely hard to perfect. Good point on the braking, it is very easy to bobble the brake pedal while trying to shift to the gas. I've done both things you have mentioned and actually spun the car (my BMW) because of letting out the clutch without enough throttle blip! :D

Great video! One thing I would like to comment regarding the procedure.... You did it correctly while at full speed but not when you were slowing things down and doing one step at a time. Make sure you press the clutch BEFORE you add gas to 'blip/rev match".

Thanks for the feedback! I feel like all my examples were executed like you said? Maybe I messed up somewhere lol. There was an instance in there where I was slowing, and shifting, but not executing a heal toe :)
@NikaHollywood
@NikaHollywood 6 лет назад
On those last couple you pushed the clutch in before even braking. One thing I notice a lot of heel toe instruction videos say is to press the brake, then clutch and blip immediately, but that is totally dependent on the braking zone. You may be on the brake for several seconds before needing to downshift. At that point you clutch, blip, shift, clutch out quickly, but don't confuse pressing the brake pedal as being part of that fast process. It actually makes it easier to think of that way. Downshifting while you are standing on the brake.
@elfferich1212
@elfferich1212 6 лет назад
Could you explain why you first blip and then disengage clutch? Why not the other way around as otherwise the engine will not be able to rev higher because it is connected to the rest of the drivetrain. EDIT: I noticed how you only done this with the sim.
@headlesnorseman701
@headlesnorseman701 6 лет назад
If you are having trouble keeping the brake pressure consistent. I’ve always done it backwards from this... heel on the brake pedal. Feels a lot more natural to apply brake pressure with your heel and gas with toe, and getting the braking correct is the important part of this. I think i saw a nascar driver do it this way when i was a kid and I was determined to learn.

Cool tutorial dude! I think you missed one thing... If you were doing it like a pro, you'd shift your left foot to the brake after the downshift so you can use your brakes to control weight distribution. It's on another level and not a lot of drivers can do it well. Check out some old Group B rally vids. God level!
@sarkology
@sarkology 5 лет назад
When shifting from 4 to 3 then 2, you didn’t release the clutch pedal in the 4 to 3 shift as you mentioned but still blipped the throttle. I believe that blip is unnecessary. The engine and flywheel are not engaged with the transmission with the clutch pedal depressed obviously. So that blip didn’t help your shift from 4 to 3. And also not rev matching because the clutch pedal wasn’t released. Only that second blip was needed from 3 to 2, that’s when the rev matching happened
@littlebits6231
@littlebits6231 5 лет назад
I think you actually need to rev the engine to put the shifter in a lower gear even if you are pressing down on the clutch. Its a safety mechanism so that drivers are less likely to accidently lock up the wheels. But in this case, Justin could of also simply shifted from 4th to 2nd and given only one larger blip

Nice video! I'm in no way great at heeltoe downshifting, but i wouldn't blip the throttle until i've disengageed the clutch. Yeah everything happens pretty quickly but that doesn't mean order doesn't matter.

Ive been driving standard for 15 years (all my driving life) i started learning to heel toe after about probably 5 years. I find now i heel toe everyday at almost every corner. once you master it its one of the best, most rewarding parts about driving standard. The BRZ i just picked up i find the gas pedal a little low and its a bit tricky when you arent mashing the brakes to get your foot to the gas i think ill look into getting that spacer to bring it up a bit that would help alot. thanks for mentioning it.

I feel like you have to do something like heel-toe to drive properly in day-to-day driving. Forget race tracks for a moment. Say you in an every day situation where you are going downhill and a turn is approaching and you need to downshift. You don't want to have your foot entirely off the brake while you put the clutch in to shift and foot on the throttle to rev match as you'll lose all your engine braking and suddenly begin rolling down the hill faster, feeling a little out of control. Without heel-toe your best bet is to basically be in neutral through the turn if you can't get into a low enough gear and then pick it up after the turn, but that's not ideal driving.

I just picked up my 17 86 and I've put 500km on it so far[odo at 650kmh]. I'm still breaking in the engine so i've been practicing heel toe and shifting techniques in the meantime until I can get into the pedal. It's a little difficult with the stock pedals but I'm finding it quite a lot of fun. I did the Mtec clutch spring which I found helped me as I am used to heavier clutch pedals. Anyways enjoyed the video thanks.

Thanks for making this video, i think I requested this 2 vids prior. I'm confused in the beginning you said break gas than clutch. Later it was break, clutch, gas. Still working on the repetition down first before attempting this. You changed your rims. Let me know if your selling your RPF1 s lol.
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 6 лет назад
Oops, sorry to be confusing. It can really be done either way, in fact the gas/clutch can be pushed in at the same time too. Basically you just need to time the release of the clutch with the revs of the engine when you blip the throttle. Those are the same Rota Titan's I've had for a while. I still use the RPF1's, they are lighter and a good bit stronger :)

@TheBTRGarage

It takes some practice for sure. Try just rolling your right foot toward the accelerator and hitting it with the side of your heel. I have size 10.5 shoe size as well. Justin, nice video. Wondering though if you leave clutch in and go from 4th to 3rd and then immediately to 2nd, how is that any different than heel-to and rev match straight to 2nd from 4th? If the clutch never gets let out, your essential in neutral the entire time and the mechanism disengaged, right? I'm just starting to learn/practice.
@TheBTRGarage

Brad Noah It isn't any different, you could go from 4th to 2nd directly if you were going the right speed. I often go from 6th into 4th.

so you blip and down shift at the same time? and also whats the diffrence between heel and toe a regular downshifting is heel and toe only for corners
@TheBTRGarage
@TheBTRGarage 4 года назад
Yes the blip + downshift is kind of one action but you need to time the clutch action accordingly as well. The clutch is really the important part. A heel + toe downshift is simply to rev match the engine to the wheel speed. If you don't do that and just let out the clutch, the wheels will lock up because the engine speed is much slower than wheel speed.

Paoseyo Vue Yiu Technically it could be either way. You just want to be sure that when you let the clutch out, that the revs are matched (throttle blip).
@ipo7596
@ipo7596 4 года назад
I'd say it leans more to shift before blip. You gotta engage the down gear first then blip and then release the clutch. So: 1. Hold Brake 2. Clutch in 3. Shift gear 4. Blip gas 5. Clutch out 6. Release brake All done in swift smooth motion. Key part is making sure the clutch is fully depressed. Mind how much brake you also use. The blip also can vary from cars, you gotta practice it alot and find the blip that is smooth not much car jerking.

That is obviously not the best thing? I know for sure not in a semi, after being trained in a 10 gear. And also when you blip the throttle, does it have have to be the exact RPM of the gear or just a good tap would do?
