Great and straightforward tutorial! I just did it on a black, jersey dress by hand since I don't have a sewing machine. Saved me at least $15 and taught me some skills. Thank you!

I'm a slightly chubby 4 ft 10. I never learned sewing and have felt too intimidated to hem myself. I either have an impossible task of buying something or I have to ge6 it tailored. I like to get my clothes 2nd hand and paying for a $10 and hemming it for twice as much is just dumb. Anyway, I gotta thank this channel and that man. I was able to hem my new dress myself! A whole world have just opened up for me! Thanks so much

I just hemmed a summer dress that I purchased earlier today. This video helped me hem a dress for the very first time. I used the machine to do the basting stitch (set the stitch length to 5mm and didn't back stitch). Thank you so much!

They used a great tailor. They used an amature photographer. Three cm, great information. They say a "SHORT" zig-zag stitch. 20 stitches/cm, or 10 /cm to stop it fraying? The camera man is shooting it from the tailor's left side. Most of the work on the machine should be from the right side.

This was very good. To critique, I only wish his fingers were not blocking the camera so I could see the finished product. I could not see the stitch size going through the machine. I would have liked to see it done in another color thread for contrast as well because I could not follow it.

Use a small 6 inches ruler that it's made for heming . Has a little gauge that goes up and down to pin point the size of the seam allowance . Use it to be certain your hem is the same everytime when sewing .. goodluck!

Maybe go a bit longer, then you have room to adjust. All things take practice. It takes courage ha ha you can do it.

This is all fine and dandy to zig zag stitch the edge of the material if you are as SKILLED as this gentleman on a sewing machine, but for novices who require something more basic, this is a LUDICROUS suggestion. Using a machine to just simply running stitch a folded over hem is hard enough, let alone securing the very edge of the fabric using a zig zag stitch!!
@rabaskan6317
@rabaskan6317 5 лет назад
Dee H A sewing machine’s user guide would teach you how to zig zag stitch if you can’t work it out. Also he didn’t secure anything with that stitch; it was PURELY to prevent fraying. Maybe you should watch the video properly before making LUDICROUS complaints.

Yeah I have no Idea what I'm doing, and not being able to see what the stitch even looks like let alone where to place the fabric exactly is confusing me more. And you can't even see what it looks like done because it's black on black on a small phone screen.

This is easier said than done because every time I have tried to shorten a dress by measuring this way it has turned out crooked. The only way seems to be to wear the dress and have someone measure for you or use a dress makers dummy which I don’t have. How do you do this on your own?
@se4698
@se4698 2 года назад
Perhaps, mark the hem and seam allowance like he did but mark all the way around the dress instead of just marking the front of the dress as he did. Also, don't cut the dress straight across like he did. That creates an uneven hem. Why? Your buttocks, hips, or tummy pouch typically call for extra fabric to cover those areas. If you cut as he did, once you put on the dress the length will be off in the sides or back. Here is what you can do-- mark the dress. Starting at the original hem, mark the length to remove, going 360° around the dress. Next, open up or cut an existing side seam then cut the top single layer of fabric until you've made your way around the dress. Don't lay the fabric flat and cut two pieces of fabric at once as he did. You know you've done this correctly when you get one long strip of fabric vs a circle of fabric.

I'm a man and a neophyte at that, and my question is whether the turned-up part of the hem will be visible from the outside of the dress when the person puts it on or will it be cuffed underneath in the inside of the dress because you don't really clarify and instead you mentioned turning the dress inside out one time?

at timeline 1:45, Mr. Hunt stated to tack in place? but where is the tack? or did her mean tape in place? How did he start to sew when he did not explain or show the basic step?
@NeekaTodd
@NeekaTodd 5 лет назад
Tacking is using a very loose stitch (what he has done in the white thread, when he said he was using a straight running stitch) to hold the fabric in place.

The dress I’m hoping to hem is handmade from the 40’s, uneven waistline and uneven original hem. So I have no straight place to measure from. As a beginner seamstress, I don’t know what else to do. Any ideas?
@mamabear8150
@mamabear8150 Год назад
If I was doing this with a ball gown so it touches the floor, could I sew it without cutting any off to make the bottoms of the dress a bit heavier? So it’s a large hem on the inside. Thanks
@amyOMNOMNOM
@amyOMNOMNOM Год назад
Technically yes, but because there would be so much excess fabric folded up on the inside you would need to sew further up from the folded “end” of the skirt to stop it from coming unfolded and making the edges contort strangely. You could potentially roll the edge into a sort of cuff and sew it like that but the bulk would likely make the edges of the skirt very bulky and not sit properly. Sorry if this explanation wasn’t clear I’m only a home sewer.

I'm so confused, why the zig zag stitch and hand stitch?
@brothersmechanics2028
@brothersmechanics2028 7 лет назад
Ginger Durbin The zig zag is to keep the edge from fraying. The hand stitch is to keep the measurement from sewing crooked. That is actually the only reason i watched this video, to find out how to keep the hem straight.
@MyGreenNest

Brothers Mechanics why not use pins or clips?
@doukzu
@doukzu 5 лет назад
a bit late, but when you're sewing with a zig zag stitch it resembles, if not _is_ a blanket stitch. Basically it goes on the edge, and "off" the dress when you're sewing (I'm terrible at explaining it) and wraps around the outside so it stops the dress from fraying. If you just used a normal stitch it wouldn't actually stop the fraying because it wouldn't even touch that part, if that makes sense? I hadn't known about the hand stitch before watching this though aha, but I would assume a hem moving isn't uncommon. Edit- although for a newbie like me I didn't stop the fraying completely, but as long as it's wearable then...

What kind of stitch are you using to put final hem on? Is that a zig-zag stitch? You lost me at this point. If it is a zig-zag - how do you sew it?
@kathrynhinz5730
@kathrynhinz5730 3 года назад
But what about the back Shouldn’t it have been longer?
@v1xm1x
@v1xm1x 2 года назад
It depends on the style of dress. This dress was the same length front and back. Some dresses however may have started out longer at the back, in which case you would mark the same distance all the way around (instead of just the front and cutting through both front and back at the same time) to retain the shape and cut around the full circumference of the skirt rather than the way demonstrated in the vid.
@MarcelaE

Not useful enough, it should have been done in a different color than the fabric to really appreciate and learn. If teaching, was the purpose of the video, of course.

This video seems to offer good info esp if you have some experience with a sewing machine, but after a quick browse thru the comments (which I always do with 'how to' videos) I noticed that there are no replies to peoples' questions. This is a big no-no for me. I prefer channels with folks who at least try to respond to their viewers queries.
