back stitch is when you reverse the sewing machine to sew backwards (usually a few stitches). This helps "lock" the stitch so that the thread does not come undone.

@@mcconn746 I've not sewn a stitch before in my life either. I'm new to the sewing community but have been educating myself with videos. I bought a Babylock Unity sewing machine. It's around $4k. Guess I better put some use out of it. LOL
