How to Highlight Text in Images in Preview on Mac

There are two ways to highlight text in images in Preview. You can highlight text in all images, jpeg, png, or tiff. You can use the Apple Preview application to annotate images by highlighting text. It can be tricky to do that as there is no ready-made highlight tool; however, there are two different ways to highlight text:
1) use semi-transparent shapes/rectangles and
2) use a semi-transparent sketch underline.
The second method is super easy and fast once you have your colors set up to highlight text as you read it. You don’t have to copy/paste and resize as you do with the first method. The first method is also a good option if you want to create shapes that add highlights.
Exact Steps:
Open your image in Preview and select the markup tool located at the top right to display the markup toolbar.
1. To highlight text with semi-transparent shapes, select the rectangle tool, choose a fill color, and set the border to none. Adjust the opacity of the fill color to make it less transparent. Then position the shape over the words you wish to highlight. You can copy and paste the shape to highlight additional words or sections.
2. Select the Sketch tool from the toolbar on the left to highlight text with a semi-transparent underline. Set the fill to none, choose a border color, and adjust the border's thickness to make it thicker. Now you can use the tool to highlight multiple text or sections by marking over them.

*Thanks so much for this, Aki!* I've already been using your first workaround option for years, trying to think laterally to solve this annoying problem, but your second option is a great idea - I much prefer it to my current method, and I'm going to use it from now on -thanks so much! 🙏🏼🏆 I know that Preview is ostensibly a _PDF_ reader, but I find it bizarre that 'highlight' isn't enabled for images by _default._ Another feature request to make to Apple, I think!

100% agree with that @221b-Maker-Street. You would think that if Apple can make it possible to Highlight PDFs it wouldn't be that much harder to do is Highlight Images. Especially since this feature has been requested for years. I guess Apple is spending more time on things that have higher margins....like phones and computers lol Cheers ( ^◡^)っ

@@akistepinska Exactly! Preview has rather become what we call in the UK, _The Poor Relation._ As a piece of software, I also find it very buggy/temperamental, but it is *free,* so don't feel I have much to complain about!

How crazy is it the Mac OS doesn't prove this basic functionality...
@akistepinska
@akistepinska 8 месяцев назад
Crazy for sure @UltimaWeaponz! I don't understand how is it possible to highlight with Preview when you open a PDF, but not an image? How much more would Apple need to do to add that functionality, especially since Preview was released in 1989!!

I just tested it again on my Mac, but I am running Sonoma 14.3.1 and the second method, which is using the Sketch tool to highlight text with border color with opacity, is working. Sorry to hear that it is not running for you on Ventura.

Thank You! kept trying to do this and couldn't figure out how - who knew that a workaround was needed for a simple function like highlighting text?!?
@akistepinska
@akistepinska Год назад
So true, Crystal! I don't understand it either, especially since you CAN highlight text when you open it as a PDF in Preview but NOT when you open it as an image. You can try it yourself. Open your image in Preview, go to File --> Export as PDF, then go that PDF and open it in Preview. Once you do that, you will have a highlight option in the upper right corner next to the markup tool. ....crazy! I don't know why it can't be available for images also, it may have to do with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology...but Preview has not changed for years....so Apple is not trying hard to improve it, it seems. (ㅅ´ ˘ `) Thank you for your comment!

Yes…great but then when you go to save the image whether a JPEG or PNG it saves it as a greyscale!! How do you save it so that it retains the colored border or highlights. I do not want to export a pdf to do this but that seems to be the only way. Nobody answers this question. You need to end your tutorial with saving the file and then reopen it and see if it is in color.
@akistepinska
@akistepinska Год назад
Hi @camelliacox1523, So it is saving as a greyscale image because your original image is in grayscale. To check whether it is, Right-click on it and select “Get Info” or select the image and click command + I to get to the same detailed info about your png or jpeg. Under Color space - check that it is not Gray. If it is, whatever color you add to it, it will save as grayscale. I just tested it out, and if the image you have has Color Space: RGB, for example, any highlights will save as color. Another option, if you don’t have a way of converting your original grayscale image, is after you highlight it, take a screenshot of it, and that will save the color. Here is a link to the Color Space info to check: drive.google.com/file/d/1wn42MDazU-JQAMTId804RyKQZKoinGGT/view?usp=sharing Thanks for watching & good Luck! 🍀

Hi @lalithasundararajan2119. I have reviewed the video, and it clearly shows the two options to highlight text. Try re-watching it and pausing while you are doing the steps on your image. Follow these steps: Open your image in Preview and select the markup tool located at the top right to display the markup toolbar.

This is an _incredibly_ clear video - I mean really! If English is not your first language, try doing just one step at a time along with the video; play the video on half speed and enable captions in your own language. But to say it isn't _clear_ really is rather ridiculous! That, or you're just a troll -I honestly can't tell... 🤔
