This is a very good video. I used to be a very good fader but was encouraged by a teacher to start drawing the ball which is a very different motion through the ball. As I’ve gotten older a draw is much more difficult to time so I decided to go back to my old fade, easier said than done. This video has helped me re-discover what I learned when I was a teenager about hitting a power fade. Excellent, excellent video, thank you for sharing.

Best explanation ... the importance of swinging from the inside and still hitting a fade!! This is an excellent video...and should stop a lot of slicers!!

Great stuff once again! It feels conceptually easier to fade the ball to me. I can draw it but it takes so much more concentration and effort for me to make that work.

You're an awesome teacher! My problem is I can hit a fade 90% of the time but I'm afraid to aim left because 10% of the time I'll pull or draw out of the blue. So I end up aiming down the middle and trying to hit a slight fade.

Adam - can you help me understand how you can shallow out the club on the inside and yet have an out to in path at impact? My trackman data shows I deliver an in to out path with a square to slightly closed face, resulting in draw spin, that starts straight, and typically draws too much, which I why am here, looking to fade. Thanks.
@Scratchgolfacademy

Jack, My best guess for you is that you need more trunk rotation through impact to pull the hands more left. Best, Adam

Do you still need to keep your head behind the ball and hit up on it? What about body tilt?

Yes, that's the idea. As hips drive towards target it creates a bit of spine tilt away from target. Best, Adam

The video seemed to show the player in closed stance and ball start off right....fade?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 лет назад
Sorry to disagree, but the video says open stance, swing path and clubface left. If might be that as I'm chatting about staying on a shallow plane and looking back at camera my feet (at that moment) look a little closed, but it's an open stance that is required. Best, Adam

I think all amateur golfers should play a fade, you wont slice the ball if you intentionally try to play a fade, you will if you take it back way inside and then inadvertently come way over the top.

Btw this explains why I could hit a power fade so much easier when I was younger. Nowadays it feels like my hips are fused with shoulders.

How much draw is too much draw with a driver? My numbers say 30 yards left of target line when it lands. Near 240 carry when it's hit properly.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 7 лет назад
Matthew, I don't think there is a definitive number as to how much is 'too much.' It depends on what the hole and wind are challenging you with. It's fair to say that if you are drawing the ball a lot it will be difficult to do it consistently, that much angle between swing path and club face makes it hard to control. Hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam
@liljackypaper
@liljackypaper 4 года назад
Adam do you know how much I need to alter the club face to the swing path to fade and draw the ball with irons? I've seen some people who say they just face the club at the target and set up/swing right or left, while others have said they put the club face roughly halfway between the path and the target.. Can you help me with which one is more accurate with irons, especially mid irons?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 4 года назад
Jack, It's all about impact. The ball doesn't react to advice etc, just the physics of the club. Play around with the variables until you have some level of control. I hope this helps. All the best, Adam

Duval was setting up for an obvious draw shot! His ball flight started right!
@Scratchgolfacademy

There is no way to know that, he could have just hit a bad shot. I'm merely going off his standard ball flight. No worries if we see it differently. All the best, Adam

@Livinghighandwise
@Livinghighandwise 4 года назад
Is this the first tip you've given that I absolutely don't agree with. The best way to hit a fade the ball for most golfers is to pick a line at setup, and then walk your feat to the left of the target line slightly so that they are facing about 11 o'clock from the target line. All that is left to do from there is to let it rip. Trying to think about leading or lagging the butt or toe of the club at impact is a recipe for disaster for most golfers..
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 4 года назад
No problem if we disagree. Most golfers can't square the club up (slicers) to begin with, as you say. This is for people who want to fade the ball...usually people that watch a video with this title are battling hooks, most slicers wouldn't look for the video. All the best, Adam

Interesting Duval played a draw most of his career? That swing example was a draw. Look at his front foot. It is closed.

I’ve played golf with David Duval, his go to shot was a fade (a slight fade). No worries Best, Adam

Duval hit a shut faced pull fade including with driver from a closed stance. Even hitting a draw which he may have been doing there, from a deep and shut backswing he lowered the arms and then tumbled the clubhead steeper and had a fade biased d-plane into impact. Shift the path far enough right and you can still hit a draw with that action. Especially with modern driver you want to be aligning to the right to hit up on it, then to fade it, take that whole rightwards alignment and shift the entire baseline way left. That’s the only way to have the thrust still going CF, in to out. Otherwise you run out of right arm and the clubhead sets into momentum. Then override the baseline and path with an open face to move the start line right of your baseline. Every weak slicer dis trying to scoop the ball forward and doesn’t allow for the clubhead already arcing left to hit a teed up ball. Assuming they tee the ball up in the stance which most don’t, and end up backin on out of the shot and flipping to add desperately the loft needed to get it airborne. In that clip, even assuming he is hitting a draw, and even with his CF looking arm at P5 he is tumbling the clubhead over and outside the hand path, which is setting up a tilted face angle/loft, basically a fade biased d-plane. And it would make sense even if he was hitting a draw to have an open face as long as it is left of the path. Double D’s swings were always closed faced, tumble over, especially from a line 2 backswing baseline, then switching to line 1 in the transition. Layman’s terms he dropped the arms from a deep and shut position and then had to steepen it into impact. Very tight dispersion, struggled (relatively!) with distance control as his loft was always changing through impact.

again you talked for 5 minutes and then put up a video of a player doing exactly the opposite of what you said. Ok the swing plane may have been low but the clubface was clearly closed at impact.
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 6 лет назад
I'll have to disagree with you on that. You can't really tell clubface at that speed with that quality of video, what tells you clubface is how ball leaves club, plus Duval a consistent fader of ball. We can agree to disagree. Best, Adam
@touristguy87
@touristguy87 6 лет назад
Scratch Golf Academy of course we can and will disagree but there is video and there is speculation. The more video you reference the less your instruction is purely speculative.
@touristguy87
@touristguy87 6 лет назад
...why would you use videos where you can't even see the club-shaft not to mention the clubface angle at impact?
@Scratchgolfacademy
@Scratchgolfacademy 6 лет назад
My instruction videos are general in nature, trying to reach a broad audience. If you choose to believe that Duval (much out of character) hooked that particular drive that's fine. However, the message I'm giving (hitting a fade) isn't based on proving that his face was a couple of degrees open to his swing path on that particular shot. No problem, again I think we just disagree. All the best, Adam
