In this video Javi is teaching a player to hit a forehand approach shot and immediately recover back to the baseline. The approach shot is an attacking shot and is a useful tool during gameplay; however, unless perfectly executed, a player will have a better chance of staying in the point by recovering back to the baseline quickly.
This drill is for players of all levels, who can practice approaching the net by hitting a forehand approach shot and then recovering back to the baseline. Javi is feeding the balls using his racket but remains close to the student which allows him to give speedy corrections.
There are two variations of this exercise - in the first, for advanced level, the player is hitting the forehand approach shot at shoulder height and lifting their leg to maintain balance. In the second, for intermediate level, the player will hit two approach shots, one at three-quarter court and one closer to the net immediately afterwards. This encourages the player to remember to move forwards after hitting shorter, easier balls.
We recommend you do 8 to 10 sets of 10 balls each and remember to take a short 1-min rest in between. Enjoy!
