The reason this works so well is because it is a ‘task oriented drill’. What does that mean? It means that you’re giving your body a task on how to hit the ball, and your brain likes this. When you’re given one of those thousands of tasks which say to move your arm or leg a certain way, your brain says- ‘wait, but I need to hit the ball’. This is why many of these drills can actually be detrimental. Look up the great Golf Coach (AJ Bonar). He explains this very simply on his golf instruction. It’s transformed my game.
Thank you for your comments Cris. Absolutely, this is known as an External Focus of Attention. Many of our videos include this principle. Thanks for watching!
Excellent explanation and demonstration Glen on hitting the ball first! Because you can't actually place a tee in front of the ball during a round of golf, I have gotten to focusing on the front of the ball. When properly done, my shots are very solid. Another thing I have to remember is rotating through the ball in order to accomplish this task. Good Job Glen!
Great lesson Aussie Golf Pros! I’ve watched loads of videos on how to hit the ball first. Your drill and explanation is the simplest and makes the most sense! Thank you!
I practiced this on the range and it went well. Started hitting it really sold with irons. When you are out on the course, would you recommend picking somewhere in front of the ball to focus on? Or should this only be done during practicing?
Thank you for your question Jon. Many of our clients have great results, taking this process onto the golf course. Some look at the far side of the golf ball some focus on the grass after the ball. Everyone is unique and we suggest experimenting with some different points of focus, to discover the best option for you. Please let us know how you get on. Cheers Glen
Great video. The perfect length video to explain simply and easily how to strike the ball and then turf. No mention of swing, rotation, grip, follow through etc etc, just a simple visual on what you should be doing. Bravo! Loved it.
@@AussieGolfPros Glen it's been great with the turf drill and playing the wind because it's been blowing it's bits off here at RQ. Last week I've shot 34, 36, 37 Stableford points. Thanks Aussie Golf Pros wouldn't have happened without you. Cheers Doug
YES!!! This works to pure your irons. Put a tee or a piece of anything in front of ball, aim at it & you'll hit a pure iron w/ divot!! Works every time!!
I have a question. If the swing is an arc, and a good strike is the blade square at the point of impact, does hitting the ball just prior to the bottom of that arc mean that the club must be fractionally open to the target at impact?
Great question Peter. The clubface angle and angle of approach are both golf impact laws. They are independent of each other. An open clubface is still open, whether impact is before, exactly at, or after the bottom of the swing arc. However, the position of the bottom of the arc does affect swing path. If impact is before the bottom of the swing arc (descending angle of approach) this promotes an in-to-out swing path. As the swing arc also comes around the body, if impact is after the apex of the swing arc (ascending angle of approach) then the club path tends to swing more out-to-in. Some coaches call this the ‘D’ Plane effect. It’s also worth noting, that the golf club is in contact with the golf ball for around 0.75 inches (2cm). So, I would agree that, as the clubface is rotating through impact, then yes, the clubface needs to be slightly open when first contacting the golf ball. However, this would be a minuscule amount, maybe less than 0.1°. Thank you for your message. Glen
Thank you for your question Zachary. The first question you need to ask yourself is: ‘Is the clubhead too high or brushing the grass too late?’ Start without the golf ball first, to recalibrate you pr turf interaction. We look forward to hearing how you get on. All the best! Glen
Hi Kora Thank you for your question. That’s great actually! As long as you’re hitting some turf and it’s after the ball, that’s great! What’s your trajectory like? Cheers Glen
@@AussieGolfPros usually on the higher side . As I go up in irons I tend to level off with average height but from 8 iron into wedges I seem to get a lot of height compared to playing partners
If that’s the case, then you need to work on reducing your dynamic loft with your shorter irons - i.e. more forward shaft lean at impact. There’s a good chance your releasing a little early in the downswing too. Keep an eye out for our next video on RU-vid. Cheers
