Holy Crap!!! I saw at least 10 suppressors on your wall!! Good on you man, I couldn't use all of them to have that many. That's a lot of wait time for them, mine was 14 months to the day to get the approval back. Cant imagine how much combined wait time you have total! By the way, I have several hunting calibers but I think the ones I like most is the 6.8 and 25-45 Sharps. Both hit like a hammer.

Appreciate you doing this video, a lot of people think they can use whatever ammo they want to hunt hog because there's no law like other protected animals. Of course you can use ball or amour piercing but if a professional hog hunter such as yourself uses the best than so should everyone else. Being as humane and respectful to the animal as you can should be important to every hunter. Shared this video with all my friends! Thanks again!

Great information in this video. 90% of what I shoot, I have loaded myself and custom fit to my liking and firearm. You are spot on with everything you said. And thanks for confirming my thoughts about sub sonic rounds. You need full power rather than stealth, cause after the first sound its hoofs moving rapidly... and a weak fart bullet most times with full size hogs "Aint" going to do much unless well placed, and considering a spooked hog is hard to stop in the first place.(But to each their own preference) Cheers.

Great Video. I'm a Rancher in south Texas. I've Harvested around 50 hogs in the past 3 years. I've tried the 5.56/.223 the only bullet I've found that works reliably is the Federal Fusion 62 grain bonded soft point. 223 bullets that I've tried that do not work are the Hornady 55 grain soft point, federal Tactical law enforcement soft points(Federal does not make these anymore) and the Winchester 64 grain soft points. I've tried this ammunition out of a 16 inch carbine and a 22 inch savage bolt gun. The federal worked well from both Barrel lengths. I use a 7.62 by 39 KS-47 now. Its is much more reliable with one shot drop and tumble kills. All the 7.62 by 39 ammo you mentioned works just as well for me. Hope this helps. What I have found with the .223 is it has a tendency to tumble when it hits any size or Dimension of bone. I've hit pigs in the shoulder and found the bullet facing vertical in the spine under the hide. Just my two cents I do not recommend the .223 especially if your paying to hunt. I'm at war with pigs so I don't care. The .223 will kill the pig you just wont find it 75% of the time.

I’m in South Texas as well and my go to is .45-70 in the 325 gr Hornady LeverEvolution. It drops them on the spot. For longer ranges I use a .308 and pretty much any 165+ grain load is good. In 5.56 I’ve had good luck with the Hornady Full Boar which is a GMX all metal bullet. Good luck keeping the population down.

I used the 168 grain ttsx in my 308, 325 ttsx in my 458 socom and 110 ttsx in my 6.8. It seems no matter what caliber it does the job. When i hit them in the ass on the run it explodes their ass and immobilizes them. Thats my favorite bullet. lots of damage, always passes though, and maintains weight.

Talking about tough hogs a friend of mine was hog hunting in Texas came across a pretty big hog. They first simultaneously stuck it with 2 arrows on the broadside, one passing all the way through. Started to charge stuck a third arrow diagonally through it's neck, still charging knocking one of the down, the hog was finnaly taken out with 4 rounds of 44 mag. 2 torso and 2 head shots and it was at last not getting back up. Crazy how one can take that, n one can drop dead n it's tracks from a 22lr to the head/neck. Shot placement shot placement

Preface: I am a HUGE Nosler fan and have always had success with them, but there is a performance window to be mindful of. On Boar Busters (Nosler Accubond), Nosler itself recommends an impact velocity of no less than about 1800 FPS. Nosler says they may not reliably expand below that velocity. Same is true of Nosler Partitions - they need no less than 1800 fps at impact to reliably expand. If you're shooting something with 2400 fps, or faster, at the muzzle, this still gets you out quite a long distance before you may have lack of expansion. Accubond and Partition are among the best, most reliable bullets made, provided you keep them within their performance window. Nosler Accubonds and Partitions are some of the most commonly used bullets for hunting Africa's plains game for a reason. For a slow mover like 170gr 30-30, it may not be your best choice.
@jordanr8312
@jordanr8312 6 лет назад
I use accubonds in my 6.8 and had to take the 1800FPS into consideration when purchasing a scope. I believe the 6.8 accubond load I have drops below 1800FPS at the 400 yard range so I realized I didn't need optics above 6x. Love my accubonds and thanks for sharing a good point that many folks don't think too much about.

I have dropped every wild hog I’ve shot with 5.56 HP’s and most of the time I hunt with Hornady 7.62x39 SST’s or 45 Colt Leverlutions. Gotta admit, almost all shots were well ‘set-up’, w/placed ‘relaxed’ shots. One day I was carrying my Rossi .454 Casull lever w/240 gr Hornady’s when I stumbled into a pack and made a rushed shot. Thought I hit it right and it went right down. As it lay and I approached it, it jumped up and charged, having only enough time to use the but of the rifle to protect my leg. There was a massive amount of blood where it went down and it left a heavy blood trail as it ran off into the never-never. The Casull hits ultra hard, and I’m not trying to knock it at all, as I’m just agreeing with some of your initial comments on sometimes it can go weird if the shot does massive damage but didn’t hit the show-stopping parts of the hog. Thanks for the valued input. Two thumbs down for any censorship your experiencing, as it’s not right. My most recent experience has been all positive too with the 110 GMX Hornady’s in a 16” SIG MCX 300 BLK.

Just curious as to your recommendation for the .450 bushmaster out if an 18" barrel? Looking at getting an AR chambered in it possibly. From my limited research and knowledge on the round, there isn't a ton of options(especially locally here in South Dakota). I've only found Hornady BLACK 250 grn FTX and Remington Premier 260 grn AccuTip locally. What is the best performing round on hogs in this caliber?

For 5.56N I've been using Black Hills 70G GMX, and Barnes 70G TSX. I've shot more with GMX than anything and it's my favorite. For 6.8 I use the 100g GMX and SSA 110G ACCUBOND. I still prefer the GMX. I used to think the ELDX was the best Bullets until I did more research . Now the only Hunting ammo I use in my AR10s is Nosler Partition. A 165G Partition to me seems over kill on a hogg . Then again I've never seen a monster hog . Mainly the ones I see are 200 pounds or less. I just know when I go to Florida or Texas to hunt some hoggs . I bring my primary Wilson Combat 16" Recon Tactical 6.8SPC . I also bring my M6 IC DI as a backup .

Great info. My go-to hog rifle is a Bushmaster with a 308 Winchester round. I used to hunt them with a 7 mm REM Mag using a 162 gr Nosler Partition with 68 gr of IMR 4831. It’s a great round because you can shoot them in the tail at 300 yards and it will still give them a concussion. The problem is, you only get one shot because by the time you chamber a second round, they’re gone. I’ve shot several at one time with the Bushmaster. My current goal is to shoot a hog with my 45. I’m using 230 gr Winchester hollow points. I’ve had three encounters so far but haven’t dropped one. Any insight into using that caliber?

Great information from actual hunting experience (not just ballistic charts) using various calibers. I’m a 7.62x39 guy and the Hornady SST are great but I’ll admit that the Wolf soft point are extremely hard to resist at about 20 cents per round. Todd, love your videos, credit you for both developing my interest in hog hunting and much of what I've learned about it. In 6.8 SPC would you say the MKZ 120 gr. Cavity back bullet has superior performance overall to the Hornady 120 gr. SST? I get down to TX about twice a year and load my own. For the limited number of shots I'm able to take, cost per round is less of an issue. I'm looking for max 6.8 performance on hogs as the primary consideration. I was also interested to read your comment about how the .308 has become your favorite round for hogs fired from your excellent LWRC. Has the 6.8 SPC lost favor for your eradication efforts or, does it still fit a certain niche. Would love to own an LWRC but, can't get them where I reside.NFA items are out here too, unfortunately. TX and it's precious freedom is inspiring, never give it up, would love to live there. Thank you for all your hard work and wonderful reviews, so greatly appreciated.
@LoneStarBoars
@LoneStarBoars 6 лет назад
The cavity back will open to a lower speed than the SST so it has the advantage on long range. I went to 6.8 before I had silencers to tame the muzzle climb, and before i had nice AR10 rifles. The 6.8 still hits hard with little recoil and is lighter, I still use both but love the extra insurance the 308 brings.

I know this is an old video but I was wondering if you have tried the 110gn controlled chaos 6.5 Grendel or the 90gn jhp American Eagle? For deer and hog with my grendel 18” and a 16” I’ve been using either the 123gn sst or the 120gn fusion bonded soft point. Both work great I actually like the fusion a little better myself but I have a pile of the 90gn American Eagle jhp and a couple boxes of the controlled chaos. I really can’t find much on the American Eagle and just worry it’s going to fragment and not penetrate deep enough but I do like the high velocity of the lighter rounds

With a silencer fast follow up shots will not be an issue with the REPR. The REPR is heavier but I lile the extra power from the .308 plus .308 ammo is everywhere. But you can't go wrong either way.

What about the good ole fashoned Remington Core Lokt? Here in the brushy terrain of Florida where shots are typically below 100 yards for the most part, it's the round of choice for many calibers like the .30-30, .308, 30-06, .270, etc. I was surprised to not see this round mentioned since it's such as successful and affordable choice around here. Thanks for a great upload!

Wow i'm surprised! Go to Walmart or any other retailer that sells ammo around you and go pick up a few boxes for your .308 and give them a try, they're pretty affordable... and would make for a great video :-)

I'm really looking to get into hog hunting, but I don't know where to do so here in Virginia where I live, and can't afford to just head out to Florida or Texas.

Thinking about a hard cast 180 grain 357 coming out of a Marlin pushing just over 1700fps. Would like to hear if you think that's good hog medicine. Should be a little more than 1100 foot-pounds of energy.

Great choice it will put them in the dirt.I wont shoot them with buckshot if its a big ole hog the buckshot will not penetrate the grizzle plate around the hogs vitals but a slug will do the job.

Great information right from the horse's mouth. When a guy has killed over 100 hogs with a certain round, you know he's got the informed opinion that matters! Great video as always. Keep up the good work! PS: I use the .308 150 grain American Whitetail by Hornady for hogs. Have you tried it?
@LoneStarBoars
@LoneStarBoars 6 лет назад
Yes I use it out of my 12" 308 and it has performed well. .308 just is not that ammo sensitive lol.

In your experience which optics or scope collects the best light in late in the day just before dark. Appears the Deer here move just before dark.

Most high sand day scopes are great at gathering light. I dont usually raven head out until the sun is down completely though.

Does anybody use the older calibers like 30-40, 45-70?
@rokkinjohann
@rokkinjohann 5 лет назад
Simple volumetric geometry. On a 1-for-1 volumetric trade, as the rear end cavity deepens the bullet lengthens. That length increase will all be behind the ogive/shank transition. Bearing surface would certainly increase without any material change in powder capacity. Still calling BS.
