Went onto the golf range today after being invited by a friend.. i'm 54 and NEVER played golf before in my life... Well after 2 hours and 2 blisters later, I'm hooked big time.. i've now been giving a full set of clubs from a friend and can't wait to go back again on the range. :)
Rick, as someone who only started playing golf this year I didn't realize what I was missing not playing this incredible game. All of your videos are so informative and really have helped me increase my game substantially in a short amount of time. All the little things seem to add up. Thanks again and keep on keeping on.
I have recently figured out my handicap and it is 19. I have been playing for a number of years with little to no improvement. I started watching your videos and come across this video. I went to a local course today just to try out 9 holes with correction with grip. I shot 4 over par. I was so amazed by how just a small change could make a huge effect on my game.
Went up the driving range after this video, impressed myself, playing a lot better. Then I changed my grips on all my clubs to a thicker grip, golf pro noticed that I had big hands, so size of the grip is also important. Massive difference and more comfortable.. Thank Rick
Thank you so much Rick. I’ve been drawing my irons since day one, I always thought that my swing was the problem but that wasn’t the case. It was my inconsistent grip. By the way, You seem like the nicest guy ever. Keep up the great work
I have been trying to learn to play golf for years and I always seem to give up because i'm terrible. Recently I have got back into it. Don't even have my own clubs, i hire clubs from the clubhouse. I would head to the driving range and whack 100 - 200 balls and ild see 20 of them do what I want them to do and the rest end up in Narnia. I watched your video last night going to bed, went to the range today and in 120 balls I hit 110 really well. This video has singlehandedly changed the way I play. Im looking forward to Sunday when ill put what I have learned to the test on a 9 hole!
I’m loving this channel! I’ve been golfing consistently for a few months now and the change has been night and day. It’s actually given me some confidence when teeing up and has allowed me to hang in there with my friends who are more experienced.
Hello Rick. I have been viewing your videos for some time now and have used your reviews to buy new clubs. Today I studied your videos on iron striking, grip technique and driving the ball straight. How simple you have made these particularly iron striking which seemed so complicated to me. I never realised that there were markings on the grip to help get the face of the club square. Absolutely great advice and thank you. Best wishes to you and what you do to help those of us who aspire to be better golfers.
I think it’s great you’re doing these tip videos, even though I already know all of this what you’ve said I always forget it and remember it at the end of my inevitable shocking round!!😁
emerysnap because I know what I’m supposed to do, but my mind just goes during a round and I forget the basics..but come the 17th or 18th I suddenly realise where I’ve been going wrong and it all comes back to me
Rick, I am 38 and have played golf since I was 12. I have always been very inconsistent with my ball striking. I didn't realize how bad my grip was or how to grip the club correctly until I watched this video. I played for the first time in over a year this past weekend. I hit my driver and irons better than I have my whole life. Thank you for making this video and keeping the grip concepts simple and easy to understand.
This video really helped me! I have never played golf before and this was the video my aunts friend assigned me to watch. I went to a driving range the next day and it really helped me! Thanks Rick.
I made an adjustment to this style. Went to the range twice. Friday was THEE best day I have had in Golf after following this video! I used ONE mulligan and dropped my score down more than 10. I really liked this one! My last 6 holes I finished +5! Iv been using the Edge set you recommended for the price. Keep making great videos!
I'm a former baseball player who just recently got into golf. I used to struggle to break 100 (I know, that's pretty bad) but after watching your videos and keeping them in mind while playing I recently shot an 88 (still not very good, but a major improvement). Thanks for all of the help
Eric Spaulding I used to see a chart as to the percentage of people that make certain scores. You would be surprised how low the percentage is that breaks 90. Congratulations on doing that. Cheers!
Don't worry about struggling to break 100 Eric, I went out the other day & played 9 and was up 33.. 67 total for 9 holes. You're not alone! All I do is take each shot slow & do my best to get the fundamentals right!
I learned a similar way from a nice person when I was in the driving range struggling and I just wished I would’ve heard those tips early. This will help so many people coming into golf.
Best video on grip ever. Rick is so clear explaining but what i appriciate the most, he's the only one not pushing people to extreme changes and putting only one system as the best in the world. Thanks a lot for all this.
Watched this video a couple of days ago, and wow did these pointers on how to grip the club really help! Literally went from slicing 4/5 shots to slicing 1/5! Thank you Rick!!
Literally changed my game forever. Nobody ever told there was a way to hold a club other than how I have always held it. I'm hitting straight everytime nonstop. You are the man.
fabulous video Rick - been watching your channel for a while and just came across this. Ive started pulling my irons, and after blaming my clubs (!) realised its more to do with my grip and controlling the club head. This is superb advice - Thanks!
Rick, you and Pete got me into golfing 2 years ago. I've probably watched all your videos, and you have definitely helped me out. I've learned just as many tips from you, as I have from getting private lessons. Thanks for all the help, and years of enjoyable videos!
Rick My Local Pro has made me turn my left hand round more nearly showing 2/ 3 Knuckles as I had a problem om coming over the Top and not Compressing the ball enough! I have had to change my swing path to more in to in to stop this. he placed 3 balls on an angle and I have to hit the middle ball... If I go wrong and come over the Top I would hit the left hand ball and visa versa!! It has gained me distance and a better shot but kills my arm having to grip my left hand so far round!!! Love your video's and rate you very highly! All the Best Nik Bird. West Sussex.
Thank you so much for this! I watched this video last night because I've been trying to find what is causing my inconsistency off the tee (mostly push-slices right). Everything in my swing felt right and my alignment was good, so I knew it had to be something in my grip. Turns out, it was! I was gripping the club too much in the palm of my left hand as opposed to in my fingers. This was limiting my wrist action and hinge in my backswing, causing my to come through both across the ball and with a way-open clubface. Went to the range this morning, focused on the grip, and voila! I was hitting some amazing drives. Thanks again!
Your instruction is top-shelf! I just picked up golf and have been focused on my swing and the mechanics of my swing were good, but my contact was never consistent. I implemented the overlap as you showed and immediately improved my contact accuracy!
I have watched a lot of your videos, Rick, and have tried a lot of different things you have suggested and finally found out how I hit a golf ball. THANKS.
Love it Rick. I have gone back to basics with my grip within the last 2 months and it has helped me incredibly well. Sometimes we get into bad habits that we don’t even realise we are doing. I had gotten into a pattern of having a very strong left hand grip. This drill has helped to get back to neutral.
I just sent this to my son he is a new golfer abs has been watching all your videos. I send them to him all the time. He’s learning a ton. Wish we could get lessons with you!
I just started golfing. I have gone to the driving range twice recently (may be 5-6 times in my whole life). I slice it to the right every time. I can't wait to follow these steps and hopefully it'll help me. Especially since I don't have any bad habits yet. I got a blister on my right hand (I'm right handed) probably because of my poor grip technique. Thank you for the informative video!
Thanks so much rick. I’m a baseball player so when i started i used a baseball grip causing to slice and i still have a problem with it. Next time I’m on the course I’ll try this out and this would be a huge contribution to my game
Fundamentals are so important in any sport, even more so in golf. With so many variables to consider on the golf course, having the basics down can prove invaluable. Thanks, Shielsy!
Hey Rick, just wanted to say thank you for this video, its amazing how one little correction can make such a difference. I was really struggling with my irons and this has given me so much confidence, really enjoy your content.
ty Rick my grip my two thumbs are straight down the middle of the club. i cant change now and i hit them pretty straight. that advice at the end of your video was awesome
Thanks Rick, I've been watching your videos ever since I started playing which has only been 2 months now, but I stick to tour videos! Cheers from Hawaii 🤙🏾
Rick, you must be psychic - I had a lesson from my local pro last week who corrected my grip, I have been holding my clubs incorrectly for years he explained the grip in exactly the same manner as you did! thank you for the reassurance as you are are right it is very odd to hold a club correctly - keep the videos coming they are very helpful particularly with the present state of Covid - keep safe
Probably one of the most useful tip videos I’ve seen. I’ve played golf for years and you get into habits you don’t realise you are in. It was good to watch the video and reset my grip. Thanks Rick.
I’ve recently gotten back into Golf with some mates and as a super beginner I really enjoy your videos. Hopefully with this grip video my game picks up
Absolute gold Rick, expecting big score improvement after watching this mate thankyou 👍 Was told years ago to have both thumbs pointing inline on middle of grip, been forever hitting irons right & severely slicing driver... 90's here we come finally!!!
Fantastic rick that for me is the best golf grip video ever and I've watched thousands so well illustrated and clear well done you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🏌️🏌️🏌️🏌️🏌️
Best grip video out there. I watched tons and was hoping for one exactly like this! Step by step with great graphic overlays and close up shots! Awesone, thanks!!
Super relevant for me at the moment having recently taking up golf and just completed my second ever round. Noticed my grip was causing me big issues after watching this... Awesome video as always Rick!
Thank you for that disclaimer at the end, Rick. Changing from the grip I used around high school/college age (and probably most of my golfing life) was probably one of the worst decisions I've ever made (29 now and grip is more neutral). Imagine having a *very* strong grip, as in seeing all knuckles on left hand, but still somehow playing a little butter cut. Was around a 4 handicap with it, so I was doing *something* right. :)
The interlock grip has helped me so far. All my shots would go left and I’d barley make contact. Did the interlock grip and somehow (so far today) my shots have been way more straight and making more contact. Thanks! made golf fun again.
Hi Rick. Great video. Started golf a few months ago. Making good progression but irons play spiralled downhill quickly due to grip problems. This will help tremendously I am sure. Thanks a lot!
I've golfed for 35 years and last summer for some reason my gripping of the club went way out of wack. Took me half of the summer to get it right again. I found a proper grip helps with getting a better shoulder turn also. Thanks for Sharing this Rick. It isn't just beginners that need help sometimes with the grip.
Thanks for a great refresher on the grip. I totally struggle with some shots left and some right. I will use your video as a call to action to get back to basics! Thanks!
Great video. Im 57. Had some lessons several months ago as I thought my grip was messed up. Settled on the overlap but set up in my palm was off and prob not starting out straight either. Also havent come across anyone talking about pressure of holding the club. Although seems easy believe I may have been holding too loose afraid it would affect my ability to take a bigger swing. I think this will hep me get back on track and improve my distance as I think I slipped back into some habits.
I get huuuuuge blisters on the inside of my right thumb (RH) cause of the way it rests on the club. I'm switching my grip to this today. Haven't tested it on range yet but it also feels like ill have more control. Thank you Rick Shiels!!!!!
I used to be a half decent golfer about 20 years ago. I recently pulled the clubs out of mothballs and now I couldn't sink a ball in a swimming pool. Your video has made me completely makeover my grip. I'm certain this will help a lot. Thanks so much!
Top video, one thing I have noticed mainly with drivers and fairway woods is if you are changing shaft position testing different things out, the grip will turn with the shaft and therefore can be difficult to use the alignment features.
This video has been the best advice/tip(s) for my golf game. Once I got use to the feel of the new grip, my slice has all but disappeared... Thank You so much for making driving off the tee fun again.....
Great vid Rick Starting my first golf membership next month and I can’t wait to get going.. Hopefully I’ll remember all these tips and not shank to many shots.
Thanks so much, I’m just starting out. These tips are where I can understand. OMG I just hit my first straight drive. Sounds giddy, but I’m proud of myself. Thanks
Thanks for this video! I learned a very similar method from instructors when I was young, and it’s never bad to have a reminder about the fundamentals. Golf feels very overwhelming when you hear of all the things you need to do to even execute a swing that will hit the ball. Simple, yet comprehensive instruction like this helps out so much!
I had an improper grip for a long time and it took a while to fix because it had become ingrained into my golf swing. But now, I hit the ball straighter and longer! Great video!
Absolutely great tip! Huge impact on my game. I was holding the club to deep in my palm, twisting it during the final motion and hitting way left of center or slicing. Hitting the ball much straighter now after changing the grip.
