How to hold a wiener dog

Coco and Diesel help us demonstrate the proper way to pick up and hold a dachshund. Diesel and Coco are both mini doxies, although Coco was marketed as a "tweenie" meaning she would be in between a standard and a mini. Diesel on the other hand was supposed to be 10-12 lbs, and is a solid 18 lbs of muscle and fur!
Handling your dachshund properly is incredibly important for their overall health and longevity, so please take it seriously.
We hope this helps you learn how to hold a dog the right way!

I've had dachsunds my whole life, most of your points are pretty correct except just to add, make sure you're always holding their front higher than their behind so there isn't strain on their lower back.

Buddy adopted me and we kinda figured it out together. As long as he gets his food and all the cuddles he demands (not exaggerating) he does his very best not to disappoint me. Smart little rascal. The day I shouted Buddy, NO! as he was hot on the tail of a squirrel and he stopped in his tracks I knew he was willing to ignore his instincts to follow my direction--I was so proud of both of us! Having your dog trust your judgement feels like a real partnership. I trust his judgement so much that if he doesn't like someone they do not get hired. He can pick out a sketchy person in an instant. So much respect for my funny shaped, smart as a whip, stubborn, snuggly Buddy! I got lucky the day he got dumped and found his way to my doorstep. Been best friends for 7 years..

I love them . I love their floppy ears I love to watch them run I love their bark they are awesome rascals. I had one for 16 years he was my best pal. Some times they have back problems but, if you give them a nice warm bath and let them shake dry it puts them back in alignment.

I have tried telling people about this too. I now have a tan, (soft) wired haired chiweenie named Ziggy and he does not like being held. Lol My other chiweenie Harley Sue was a whole different pooch, she loved it. I lost her a year ago, 6/29/17 and I still miss her so much! Ya gotta love those fur babies! Your doxie's are adorable!! Hugs from Texas!! xx : )

i have a chuweiner named Tai'Luhlah, shes 11 this year and i have limited use of my left arm so she is held between my body and hip so is more pinned but still supported, shes only about 7pds and has a shorter body. he mom though before i lost use of my arm, was always carried properly and she was closer to 16pds {and not my dog} i had to teach that lady how to pick up her doxie because shed lift her by her front arms like a kid. Grace would up loosing feeling in her hind legs by 8yrs of age because of it, Tai'Luhlah has no back issues as of yet and due to diet and massage and luck she wont get any till shes nice and old, thanks for a great video!

I usually put my arm through their back and front legs so they straddle my arm and then with the other arm, I wrap around incase they try to jump. I have minis so this might be impractical for a full size doxie.

Thank you for posting this video! We are about to move to an upstairs apartment and I’m nervous because we have a dachshund. It’s not good for their backs to be going up and down stairs all the time so this pup will be carried 😂
@emiliahe1
@emiliahe1 6 лет назад
Sara R Oh god no.. I understand carrying your dachshund if it is a puppy with developing back, but if it’s a fully grown adult for god’s sake don’t carry them, let them walk the stairs on their own. If you forbid them from stairs and jumping, it’s definitely going to create back problems.
@chrissywallace2517
@chrissywallace2517 6 лет назад
Sara R Good idea, they are definitely better being carried, just in case!
@marshahampel1645
@marshahampel1645 6 лет назад
Emilia Heinonen you're 100% wrong... please educate yourself on this topic before you spew false and dangerous information
@emiliahe1
@emiliahe1 6 лет назад
Marsha Hampel Actually no. I’m not wrong at all. If you never let them jump or go stairs, their back muscles will not develope properly and in some point undeveloped back muscles will cause problem to them. And besides dachshunds are a hunting breed. They have been refined to use in hunting and in caves. I doubt that the ones that hunt have any back problems since they run in the forest through thick bushes and over small rocks with no effort. There’s no scientific proof that letting them jump will harm their backs. There’s more proof that most of the back problems are caused by lack of exercise and denying them from jumping even a little bit (poorly developed back muscles because of that), overweight and poor diet. Also the genes of the individual’s parents can be a huge part of that deal. If even one of the parents have back problems, it creates higher risk for the puppies as well. And on top of all this, it’s false knowlegde that they have longer backs. They actually have equally as long backs as other dogs. The legs are just shorter and make the back seem longer.
@chrissywallace2517
@chrissywallace2517 6 лет назад
Emilia Heinonen the hunting type are the standard larger size, and tend to have longer legs. The mini ones have shorter legs and are prone to back problems, usually due to jumping on and off things like stairs and sofas. I've seen this very problem first hand in a few dachshund minis (owned them and work with them, including one who has just had surgery for this very problem - due to jumping). You definitely need to exercise them and keep their weight down, but carrying them up and down stairs at least, and not letting them jump on and off things is most definitely better for them. That's why so many people get their dachshunds those snazzy ramps for the house!

It's actually a myth that Weiner dogs have long backs. The back is actually normal length, actually from the mid back down it's mostly balls actually.

The dachshund I had 50 years ago I held with the length of her underside along my arm. She loved to play fetch. I would throw something, then lower her to the ground and she would launch like a torpedo with all four legs in motion before she made contact with the ground. She weighed 18 pounds, which means she would exceed the lifting weight limit my doctor has placed on me these days.

I hope you came to her aid and showed them the correct way to hold her to prevent injury. All it take is one time of being lifted/held wrong & her back could be broken. I don't know if you are aware that Dachshunds have 1-2 extra Vertebra. Please show every visitor the correct way to pick your dog up before they have a chance fumble through it them selves.
