yes the last part about providing a gap or space and to not strangle the violin is superb information to have when starting in your basics. Unfortunately I learned at a young age through a classroom setting and this was never stressed upon. This led to many difficulties in performing vibrato by the time I was in middle school. Please do yourself a favor and make sure to look up these basic but important methodologies of correctly holding a violin. If you have only just started but have built a habit of strangling the violin, please, reteach yourself as soon as you can even if the improper way is working.

My left thumb helps hold the violin up, but the base of 2nd finger doesn’t prevent the rotation/slippage of the violin. For this latter reason I need a shoulder rest. To free up my 2nd finger. If I rely purely on head to hold the violin, I develop tension.

I've played guitar for 15 years and bought a violin last weekend. I've picked up a lot of the left hand technique very quickly and I'm playing bow exercises for 2/3 of my practice to try to catch it up. When I got the violin my guitarist ego said I should avoid the shoulder rest and play like a real violinist. After seeing that even many pros use a shoulder rest, as well as watching this video, I am heading back to the store tomorrow to look at shoulder rests. Thank you.

Hi Heather, thank you so much for posting this explanation! I've saw your video at the end of day 1 during my challenge of trying to learn the violin in 1 week. I saw multiple videos on this specific topic and thought yours was most useful. It helped me discover that I had to buy a shoulder rest. Still I'm not super comfortable, while playing, but perhaps I just need some more time or it is technique. If you have a moment to look at my vlog and see how I'm playing on day 4, it would be pretty cool to get some feedback from you and tips on maybe what video's to watch to take it to the next level of comfort and skill. Hello Heather, Thanks for the 4 secrets of holding the violin. There are 2 things I have a tough time with, facing my palm towards the neck is painful and I can seem to keep it parallel to the fingerboard. Number 2 is what to do with my thumb, I just can't seem to find a comfortable place for it after more than a year of trying!!! Thanks, Ron

As I've noted in another video of yours. You, like most good players of any string instruments and piano, have remarkably long,slender fingers. There is no underestimating how much easier it is to get over the beginning hurdles with such attributes. Your pinky is longer than any of my fingers by far. I'd love to try tackling this instrument. Are there any pointers you might have for those of us who are not genetically predisposed to learning the violin?
@HeatherKaye

Long fingers but thin at the tips which makes doublestop fifths in higher positions rather difficult :) Yes for shorter fourth fingers - bring the left elbow under the violin even more.

@HeatherKaye
@HeatherKaye 3 года назад
You are so welcome! Sounds like you need to use a dampit. amzn.to/2WSnoTZ When the pegs start to slip it is most likely due to a dry climate and the wood shrinks. Cold, dry winter weather could be the cause. The dampit helps you regulate the humidity for your violin. Keep me posted!

The secret for me was the centered chin rest. The shoulder rest helped a lot, but the chin rest position was the thing that was killing me. I just added violin to my arsenal. I still sound like a dying cat but I'm working out the physical stuff early and often. I can now easily hold the violin without any left hand support without feeling like I'm auditioning for The Exorcist. The left mounted chin rest made me feel like i was having to turn my head backwards almost, and it was impossible to find any reasonable compromise of chin/shoulder rest positions.

Violins don't "come with shoulder rests." You have to buy them separately.

I guess that I could have found time if I really wanted to. The second reason must be the true one. Being on my own, not much help was available. The sound was always terrible. I hope by now , 2020, that your audio is no longer bouncing so harshly of all the solid surfaces around you. You need some sound absorbers, such as carpeting, curtains, soft furniture, and/or maybe some professional gear. Also, your volume is too loud (compared to others YTs I've been watching prior to yours), and woke up the lady upstairs.

Thanks for this video! I haven't held a violin since I was 12, and now I remember why- i find it very painful! I cant seem to get the violin in the right position- it hurts both my jaw and my collarbone to try to hold it up with no hands. Its like its too heavy. I know its a cheap beginner violin, but should it be so heavy that I cant hold it up like that? perhaps I need a different shoulder rest? which do you recommend? I have bruises on my collarbone and jaw just from trying it.
@HeatherKaye
@HeatherKaye 4 года назад
Thanks for watching Marcy! Yes, definitely investigate a shoulder rest. I use Bravo Kun but a normal Kun for a full size instrument is what you want to start with. Then it makes a difference in comfort where exactly sits the shoulder rest. After this and you still have issues definitely check into the chin rest. Keep me posted how it goes for you.

Thanks Heather. I've played for many years and I think I should switch to a center chin-rest but they end up being too tall for my neck which puts a strain on it. I've tried using poly-pad shoulder rests and viva la musica shoulder rest but my shoulders get tired. Not sure what to use.

Abi Have you tried the center mount without a hump? Do both shoulders get tired or only one? You may just try a washcloth or handkerchief if you find the shoulder rests too high.

So, most of the books I've used and some other videos I've seen say that the violin neck makes contact when playing with the side of the thumb, and the side of the palm beneath the first joint on index, and I' usually lift my hand away to get some freedom for vibrato. They also say not to squeeze and there should be a space underneath. Are you saying there should be a space when playing regular notes on the side of palm beneath index?

First of all, thank you for your videos, most instruction I've followed as a self learner has been from them. I am a slightly advanced beginner and I pay meticulous attention to the rules. Keep the bow in center, keep the left wrist straight, bring the violin to your chin, elbows not to high or to low. It's a lot to keep track of but I am getting fluid enough to be able to focus on playing instead of all technique. Today was the longest session I've played, roughly six hours but I'm forced to put the violin down for the night because my collar bone is aching. I am still a bit stiff in the wrists and left arm. Of course, I have no one to observe me and sometimes I find that I've fallen into a slouch when sitting though I mostly practice standing up. Would you happen to know the mechanics that would cause the pain in my collar bone or is it perhaps the shoulder rest? I do have a very pronounced collar bone. Thank you very much.
@monkafire3970
@monkafire3970 6 лет назад
As a supplement, there were no sensitive spots directly on my collar bone though the pain was localized there, about 3/4's the way in towards my neck. I stretched the whole region and feel better but want t avoid future occurences. Also, I am using a shoulder rest that prevents the necessity to raise shoulder or crane neck and changed my chin rest that is more flat, less sculpted so there's less pressure on my jaw. Any input is appreciated.

Resolved: I signed up for a 30 minute tutoring and I was holding the violin too high, causing pulling in my shoulder and also resolved some wrist tension. Sometimes you just need a trained set of eyes and an outside perspective. Cheers.

Ahh, yes, Excellent. It may surprise you to know a GOOD double bass teacher will always go through this with a new Bass student, as all Double Bassists are encouraged to bring a violin (theirs or another's) to the first lesson. (Forgive me if you know this already): The violin must be held, by the neck - comfortably, yet firmly, and in your strongest / dominant hand (Yes, the latter goes against many teachings). The type of grip is not important at this stage. The student must let the arm holding the instrument fall down the side of the body and slightly _behind_ the hips (imagine holding a full shopping bag by the handles as you walk). Once Settled as above, one must breathe, relax the shoulders whilst becoming aware of the "weight" of the instrument - perhaps even guessing and verbalising this to the Teacher. Finally - with as much energy one can muster - the student must HURL the violin AS FAR as possible (note: a wall may be used in place of distance). If it is a group session the Double Bass students or their parent's may engage in a "bet" of their own making - perhaps number of splinters or how "far" the instrument travelled etc. Take note: There is a movement of more fundamental Contrabassists (more relevant in the Baroque arena) who feel that this method should extend to the Violinist too. Now, I have seen it, and it certainly *does* make for a jolly and active little concerto, but it IS rather debatable that this actually existed at the time of 'Rebel et al. After all: We are not Heathens. Of course, quarter and yardage is always given to those who prefer the double bass or Violione Contra-Basse to be in the foreground. I believe the "curtain method" (players of these "little neck-basses" play BEHIND a curtain or, indeed, another room/building). And Thank you so much for your great lessons, and may I kindly recommend a Lapel or Lavallière microphone to help us hear you. It is sometimes difficult with the screechy scratchy banshee wailing in my ears. Sincerely, General (ret). William-William O.B.E.

Thanks for the instruction : ) Two things though - find a room with less echo, probably one with carpeting and drapes, and your audio will be much better. The second item is "slope" - yes, one puts the violin out at about 45degrees, with the strings parallel to the ground, but what of the slope angle of the violin to the ground?
@HeatherKaye
@HeatherKaye 9 лет назад
usernamemykel Thanks for the audio tip. I no longer record in that room. It is the rehearsal hall for the chamber orchestra I perform with here in Bulgaria. As far as the angle of the instrument to the ground it should be flat like a table. Definitely not drooping down and only angling slightly higher than horizontal for a short amount of time perhaps in musical movement of the body. The violin has energy and it is lost when angled to the ground. Great questions.
