How To: Honda CRF300L/Rally - Rear Preload Adjustment
After my first ride on the 2021 Honda CRF300 Rally, I found the suspension to be pretty soft and bouncy, particularly on the rocky lanes of the Peak District. There's no adjustment to the fork, and the rear shock has only preload. The suspension on both the CRF300L and the CRF300 Rally is the same, and though this video only looks at the CRF300 Rally, the same process applies to both versions of the bike.
This video is me attempting to measure the suspension sag of the bike (with mixed results) and then adding two full turns to the rear suspension pre-load. If you already know how to adjust suspension, just skip to the end. Suspension videos really aren't that interesting are they!
00:00 Introduction
01:45 Measuring
05:00 Lots of hammering
07:22 Conclusion
#SpoilerAlert one turn = 5mm of sag improvement, but there are only two turns I could make, and even after that, it's still running 150mm/260mm of rider sag.
This is the Motion Pro Sag Scale I've used:

Suspension upgrade recommendations are welcome (and needed!)

Yup, they do that! (Or at least mine did!) I think if you’re under 70kg, then a turn of the preload can limit it at the back at least. It is useful to ride it stock though, so at least you appreciate the change when it’s upgraded. Have fun, I’m sure you’ve been waiting a while. Honda working to a budget again. I've seen a few guys reviews using the yss shock and it seems to be a good shock for the money. I still think it's and excellent trial bike to begin with so anything you do to it will just make it a whole lot better. I'm following with interest to see how it goes as I'm getting fed up with bike bikes. Just want to bumble about and take the odd holiday/camping trip. Keep up the good work.👍
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 года назад
Yup, but I suppose for those that aren’t really bothered, I’m sure the stock is good enough I’ve heard good things about the YSS too, so it’s on the list. I’ve a pair of YSS shocks for my XV1100/R6 project bike which I really should get to at some point. Though the suspension is budget, I still think it’s a lot for the money, and there isn’t really anything comparable in the UK at the moment. Even with upgraded components, it’s still good value. Though as I’ve bought one, I’m bound to say that 🤣🤣🤣

Not sure if its been covered in the comments but I found it easier to adjust by lifting it up so rear wheel has full sag/droop on a center bike lift/jack , just have to make sure you get the front tied in place so you dont bump the bike and it falls over , or get Mrs Peak to hold onto the bike 👍 Always enjoying your videos well done keep them coming 😊

Great review! I own a 2018 250 rally and had both the forks and rear shock re-sprung and re-valved. WOW!!! what a difference it makes both on and off-road. I only weigh 75kg but the standard suspension was still way too soft. The suspension upgrade was expensive ($1100 Aussie dollars) but I got the bike second hand at a great price so the extra $$ for the suspension was well worth it. I can ride with luggage off-road and get a little air bourne over some terrain without bottoming. :) There is also much less fork dive when braking on the road too!

@@infernalcontraptions yup, that would have been good of them. 😁. Still, maybe because the fixed or improved a lot of the other things, we still look for flaws! I put a third turn on my preload last night so the static sag is down from 70mm (26%) to 55mm (21%). It’s still double where it should be, but if 1 turn of the preload nut=5mm of travel, and the ideal would be to get to 26mm (from 70mm, assuming the adjuster goes back to the stock position) then the spacer width would be equal to 9 turns of the nut. If you can measure the thread pitch and multiply by 9, that is probably the starting size for your spacer.

Though given that we've had a lockdown or high 'Tier' restrictions in the Peak District for most of the last year, we've not done any travelling, and the only option has been work... so though under other circumstances the budget option would be ideal, I'll see what the big outlay looks like and decide. I’m surprised that they said someone else had no problem. Maybe one foot on a peg and a toe on the ground on the other side. On the plus side, you do have a few options; getting a 405mm ‘asia spec’ rear shock (outside Asia, the shock is 415mm. This 10mm difference makes for a 40-50mm lower seat height) and dropping the forks half an inch in the triple clamps should get your feet down comfortably without having to resort to a lowering link.

Perfect method to sort out the suspension. Trouble with the CRF seems the spring. It's way too light, as you stated. What are your plans now? Change the spring only or go for a full YSS? Might depend on another ride where you can test the CRF's damping qualities. Perhaps in full gear, with luggage and maybe a pillion? Cheers from Nürnberg/Germany, Günter PS: What roads do you usually ride? I use lighter springs for my Beta Alp 200 (solo riding, no lugage, technical stuff), but firmer springs for my old Honda Transalp 600 PD06 (solo travels, little luggage, dirt roads). These bike are a comprimise. As fully road-legal allrounders they can't compete with specialists.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 года назад
I had considered just doing the spring, but the damping is not great, so I think I’ll replace the shock. I’m trying to find the limits of the stock one, so I’ll ride for a few weeks as it is. As for the replacement, I think I’ll get a get a shock from Nitron. I spoke to them today and when I have a riding gap, I’ll send them my stock shock to measure and test, and then have a shock made up for me in riding gear at the ‘softest’ and +20kg for luggage. I don’t think I’ll ever take a pillion, I have three other bikes which are far more suitable for that. Until now, mostly on road with the occasional dirt road on a R1250GS with and without luggage and occasionally a pillion. It has the electronic suspension and just sorts itself out quite well. The CRF300L will be mostly ridden on roads from where I live to Sandy and rocky trails that are a few miles away. The TET passes near to my home and is a mix of farm tracks and rocky gritstone and limestone trails. I don’t expect the CRF will be like an enduro, but the trails are shared with walkers, cyclists and horses, so at those speeds it’s fine.

Well then, I have to discover tracks near Nürnberg during day trips. There are lots. I hadn't known that. So thanks, Mutti, for making me stay near home;-) Some tracks your could actually call TET, but I'd rather have some mountains to climb. Like you have in the Peak district. But then, for these specific roads, difficulties and speeds your CRF 300 would be perfect. And quiet and inobtrusive, too - concerning horses, walkers, doggies, mountains bikers.

Do you have an after video of your opinion of how this change affected the riding of your crf-300 L rally? Did it make it better or did it just make it more bouncier?
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 года назад
I didn’t but I haven’t yet found a good way to demonstrate suspension in a video. The changes are generally to handling, traction and feel, which I can talk about, but visually aren’t demonstrated. With the preload on it was better, but yes more bouncy and I was still bottoming out the rear from time to time. It also reduces the static and rider sag, so perhaps the geometry works a little better, but it wasn’t noticeable. I’d suggest to anyone to ride it stock and see what you think. Then add pre-load if it’s needed and ride again. If it’s bottoming out, then I think a new shock is better than just putting in a stronger spring. The other problem is the forks, and for front end impacts, that is more likely to show up the bikes weakness for heavier riders. They weren’t available last summer, but the new valve kits are pretty good and seem to be a good middle ground between just springs and the cost of new cartridges. I hope this helps!

I’ve been following your channel for a while now. Great stuff! Mega! Well now I have my own (300L) and have a question regarding setting sag. I hear you talking about measurements of travel. How do you know what that “goal” measurement should be? I’m likely 190lbs with gear and no luggage.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 года назад
Hi Brad, I think the total rear suspension travel is 265mm or thereabouts. I’m sure other opinions are available, but I think the ideal is 10% static sag and 30% rider sag. Or to put it another way, lift the bike from the frame so the wheels are off the ground, and measure from the centre of the rear axle (or something near there from which you can take a repeatable measurement) vertically up to a fixed point on the seat. The helmet catch might work for this. Note this number. Then lower the bike, and when upright, the measures distance should be 26.5mm shorter. Then sit on the bike in gear, in a riding position, ideally feet on pegs (but don’t fall off!) and have someone measure the distance once more. This time it should be 79.5mm shorter than the jacked distance (This is the rider sag). What you’ll find is that measuring to the mm is really difficult, but see if you can get as close as you can and then go for a ride. You can measure the same on the fork, axle to a fixed point on the upper for the same. 10% static sag (just the weight of the bike) 30% rider sag.

To make the shock firmer, do you make the shock spring compress? It seems like you let the spring expand??? Confused. Thank you! Ron
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 года назад
Yes. I compressed the spring. When viewed from the top, I turned the nut clockwise. Is that what you meant? e.g. If a spring can compress by 15cm with 150kg on it. (And it’s a linear spring), each 1cm will be compressed by 10kg. If you can add 3cm (so compress the spring by 30kg) but keep the shock the same length then you’re essentially starting at the 30kg compression point but with all the travel still to play with. That’s probably not a great explanation but Google Hooke’s law and it’ll be better. Maybe.

Hi Dave, you're right, feet should be off the ground, but with lockdown and the fact that we're not allowed visitors, (and I don't have a convenient wall), I opted for 'just' balanced while the measurements were taken. Hi, I’m 6’1” which is about your height. Stock is too low. Best thing is to try one if you can. I’m comfortable on the 20mm ones, though perhaps 30-40mm would have been better if I could find them. Perhaps 20mm and a bar that is 20mm higher than stock is ideal? Suspension is more a weight thing and riding style (perhaps?) but again, see if you can try one. Prime example of function following form. Like a cringey Harley, the CRF's flashy and "racey look" impresses the noobs for show but it's a no go. Not only is the suspension a complete fail from the get go, the stock exhaust is just plain black painted steel which will rust quickly. The KLX300 is the 300 to get with its good usable suspension and stainless steel exhaust.

Except the KLX300 doesn’t meet European emissions regulations so isn’t available here… this is a shame. Honda have the only real dual sport like this for sale. I'm sorry but there is no disappointment on Honda to be had here. Max weight on the CRF300L is 160kg. I saw it written on the left side of the bike when I ordered it. That's 160kg for you, pillion and luggage. If you are 125 out of that 160, no, it's not practical have a pillion, not unless they're 35kg... with gear. It's a 152kg bike, it's cheap, it's light, has a small engine, it's for young beginners. It was not made to be ridden by someone that can afford Schubert, Rukka and a lot more hamburgers than it's healthy for them. You can't buy a cheap adventure bike and expect it to carry the weight a BMW GS would. Honda didn't miss a trick, you're not the target for that bike.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 года назад
Thanks for your feedback. I don’t plan on taking a pillion, I quite like the bike, it’s a lot of fun, and I enjoy riding it a lot, even at my age, experience and perceived interest in hamburgers😉. There’s plenty of older, and more experienced riders who have bought one and had a similar experience. It isn’t a GS, but I have a GS for that, and the GS isn’t a CRF. As for it not being made for someone who can afford certain brands, I’m not sure what to make of that. I don’t think they are related, but each to their own. I just like riding motorcycles and don’t think of any bike as only for a certain type of person, or not for others. That seems a bit prejudiced don’t you think? Ride safe, and have fun. I will 😉

@@PeakMotorcycles Prejudiced? Most products in this world are made for a target consumer, it's not prejudiced, it's great to be able to buy something more tailored to your needs. This product was made for people in emerging markets (It's been launched in Thailand 6 months before it was available in EU) where people don't get to 125Kg. For developed economies, the target of the 300L Rally is younger people who do not afford a 700Tenere or a 850GS and also did not have the time an money required for proper hamburger accumulation. Honda designers did not have a 125kg guy with expectations "trained" on Schubert and Rukka in mind when they made this bike. The "mark" you said they missed was not even on the map. You bought a cheap adventure bike, adapted from a dirt bike, it's good you enjoy it, you can say it's not for you because you're too heavy for the bike, but criticism should be reserved only for not doing something that would be reasonably expected to do.

@@valentinursu1747 thanks again, and your opinion is valid, for you. As is mine for me. They just happen to be different. This is also fine. Surely each person can choose what they like regardless of being the target market or not? I can only speak for myself and what bike I think is right for me. 😂 fair enough, I had to do the same job on my 250 rally when I first got it, I managed to do it with a c-spanner though, I loved the 250 rally and it noticeably opened up after 1000 miles, a 13 tooth front sprocket livened the acceleration up all through the gears, eventually changed it for a Ktm 640e but this week I’ve put a deposit down on the standard 300l, all the improvements should make this bike a great dual sport for green lanes & TET , just looks like the suspension is the only gripe, oh and no led headlight & indicators here in the Uk ! unfortunately no idea when it’s going to turn up yet though 🙁

It really is a pain to get in there. A fellow called Dave posted that on his CRF300L (non-Rally) once the lock nut was loose, he could reach in and turn the spring to adjust the preload. I know there’s no LED headlight on the L, but I was surprised that my UK spec Rally came with all LED indicators. Have fun on the TET. I’m a mile from the section round Castleton and am planning to ride a few days in each direction to see how far I get. Agreed on ‘everything better except the suspension’ on the new 300’s. @PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 года назад
Yup, I agree entirely. I'm not expecting fancy adjustable damping, an accessible adjuster, or even a high quality shock. But I think having an appropriate spring rate for the stock bike isn't a Dakar replica requirement. To put a slightly heavier spring on at the factory would be minimal, if any incremental cost. The fact that the static sag from stock (regardless of rider weight) is 27% is also unsuitable for the Asian market. This has been an issue with the 250L that they haven't addressed (when they managed to sort many of the other weaknesses, even though still working to a budget). It's also misleading when they report the new higher ground clearance, when in reality you lose a quarter of that from the off and most riders (even those in Asia) will only have half to play with when riding. I've already bought the bike, so if anything I should be shouting it's virtues and perhaps glossing over the shortcomings, but then, I'm sure I'd get called out on that, and quite rightly so.
